A Study on the Explosion Characteristics of City Gas (도시가스의 폭발 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Explosive characteristics of the city gas were determined by using the gas explosion apparatues. The explosive range is determined between lower explosive limit of 5.0% and upper explosive limit of 15.3% at atmosphere and even though the oxygen concentration is decreased, lower explosive limit is not changed, but upper explosive limit is rapidly decreased. The minimum oxygen for combustion is determined 10%. The maximum explosion pressure is determined 5.72$\textrm{cm}^2$ and the maximum rate of explosion pressure rise is oxygen concentration of 12% to determined 160.12$\textrm{cm}^2{\cdot}$sec.

Effect of Zine Oxide Size and Oxygen Pressure on the Magnetic Properties of (Ni, Zn) Ferrite Powders Prepared by Self-propagating High Temperature Synthesis (ZnO의 입도와 산소압이 고온연소합성법으로 제조된 Ni-Zn Ferrite 분말의 자기적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • $(Ni, Zn)Fe_2O_4$ powders were prepared through self-propagating high temperature synthesis reaction and the effects of initial zinc oxide powder size and oxygen pressure on the magnetic properties of the final combustion products were studied. The ferrite powders were combustion synthesized with iron, iron oxide, nickel oxide, and zinc oxide powders under various oxygen pressures of 0.5~10 atmosphere after blended in n-hexane solution for 5 minutes with a spex mill, followed by dried at 120 $^{\circ}C$ in vacuum for 24 hours. The maximum combustion temperature and propagating rate were about 1250 $^{\circ}C$ and 9.8 mm/sec under the tap density, which were decreased with decreasing ZnO size and oxygen pressure. The final product had porous microstructure with spinel peaks in X-ray spectra. As the ZnO particle size in the reactant powders and oxygen pressure during the combustion reaction increase, coercive force, maximum magnetization, residual magnetization, squareness ratio were changed from 1324 Oe, 43.88 emu/g, 1.27 emu/g, 0.00034 emu/gOe, 37.8$^{\circ}C$ to 11.83 Oe, 68.87 emu/g, 1.23 emu/g, 0.00280 emu/gOe, 43.9 $^{\circ}C$ and 7.99 Oe, 75.84 emu/g, 0.791 emu/g, 0.001937 emu/gOe, 53.8 $^{\circ}C$ respectively. Considering the apparent activation energy changes with oxygen pressure, the combustion reaction significantly depended on initial oxygen pressure and ZnO particle size.

  • Influence of changing combustor pressure on flame stabilization and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission in the swirl-stabilized flame with secondary fuel injection was investigated. The combustor pressure was controlled by suction at combustor exit. Pressure index ($P{\ast}=P_{abs}/P_{atm}$), where $P_{abs}$ and $P_{atm}$ indicated the absolute pressure and atmosphere pressure, was controlled in the range of $0.7{\sim}1.3$ for each equivalence ratio conditions. The flammable limits of swirl flames were largely influenced by changing combustor pressure and they showed different tendency compared with laminar flames. Emission index showed maximum value near atmospheric condition and decreased with decreasing pressure index for overall equivalence ratio conditions. R.m.s of pressure fluctuations also showed similar tendency with nitric oxide emission. By injecting secondary fuel into flame zone, the flammable limits were extended significantly. Emission index of nitric oxide and r.m.s. of pressure fluctuations were also controlled by injecting secondary fuel. The swirl flames were somewhat lifted by secondary fuel with high momentum, hence low nitric oxide emission. This NOx reduction technology is applicable to industrial furnaces and air conditioning system by adopting secondary fuel injection.

  • In present study, the influence of changing combustor pressure on flame stabilization and nitrogen oxide (NOX) emission in the swirl flame with secondary fuel injection was investigated. The combustor pressure was controlled by suction at combustor exit. Pressure index ($P^*=Pabs/Patm$), where Pabs and Patm indicated the absolute pressure and atmosphere pressure, was controlled in the range of 0.7~1.15 for each equivalence ratio conditions. It could be observed that flame stable region became narrower with decreasing equivalence ratio and pressure index. In this combustion system, stable flames were formed until $P^*=\;0.7$. Emission index decreased with decreasing pressure index for overall equivalence ratio conditions and NOx reduction rates were almost identical for $P^*<1$ regardless of equivalence ratio though EINOx values showed different level with change of equivalence ratio for $P^*{\geq}1$. It is also observed that EINOx decreased with increasing secondary fuel injection ratio. Emission index of nitric oxide was controllable by adjusting the changing combustor pressure and injecting secondary fuel and this NOx reduction technology is applicable to industrial furnaces and air conditioning system.

  • The ionic conductivity of cubic solid solutions in the system $Y_{2}O_{3}-ZrO_{2}$ prepared by SHS was examined. Conductivity-temperature data obtained at $1000^{\circ}C$ in atmosphere of low oxygen partial pressure ($10^{-40}$ atm) for $Y_{2}O_{3}-ZrO_{2}$ cubic solid solutions indicated that these materials could be reduced, the degree of reduction being related to the measuring electric field. At low impressed fields no reduction was observed. Thus, these conductivity data give a transference number for the oxygen ion in $Y_{2}O_{3}-ZrO_{2}$ cubic solid solutions greater than 0.99.

  • In case of a high-speed D.I. diesel engine. the injected fuel spray is unavoidable that the impinging on the wall of piston cavity and in this case the geometry of piston cavity has a great influence on the atomization structure and air flow fields. In the field of combustion and in many other spray applications, there are clear evidence of correlation between spray structure and emission of pollutants. Ordinary, the combustion chamber of driving engine have unsteady turbulent flow be attendant on such as the change of temperature, velocity and pressure. So the analysis of spray behavior is difficult. In this study, a single spray was impinged on each cavity wall at indicated angle in a quiescent atmosphere at room temperature and pressure, as being the simplest case, and 3 types of piston cavity such as Dish, Toroidal and Re-entrant type was tested for analyzing the influence of cavity geometry. And hot wire probe was used for analyze non-steady flow characteristics of impinging spray, and to investigate the behavior of spray, the aspects of concentration c(t), standard deviation $\sigma(t)$ and variation factor (v.f.) was measured with the lapse of time.

  • The preparation of $TiC_{0.7}N_{0.3}$ powder by SHS in the system of $Ti-TiH_2-C$ ($N_2$ atmosphere) was investigated in this study. In the preparation of $TiC_{0.7}N_{0.3}$ powder, the effect of gas pressure, compositions such as Ti, $TiH_2$, C, and additive in mixture on the reactivity were investigated. At 50 atm of the initial inert gas pressure in reactor, the optimum composition for the preparation of pure $TiC_{0.7}N_{0.3}$ was $0.75Ti+0.25TiH_2+0.7C+0.5NaCl$. The $TiC_{0.7}N_{0.3}$ powder synthesized in this condition was a single phase with irregular shape.

Condensation and coagulation of metallic species with fly ash particles in a waste incinerator (폐기물 소각시 생성되는 유해 중금속물질과 연소실내 비산재와의 응축, 응집 현상에 대한 연구)

  • A numerical analysis on condensation and coagulation of the metallic species with fly ash particles pre-existing in an incinerator was performed. Waste was simplified as a mixture of methane, chlorine, and small amounts of Pb and Sn. Vapor-phase amounts of Pb- and Sn -compounds were first calculated assuming a thermodynamic equilibrium state. Then theories on vapor-to-particle conversion, vapor condensation onto the fly ash particles, and particle-particle interaction were examined and incorporated into equations of aerosol dynamics and vapor continuity. It was assumed that the particles followed a log-normal size distribution and thus a moment model was developed in order to predict the particle concentration and the particle size distribution simultaneously. Distributions of metallic vapor concentration (or vapor pressure) were also obtained. Temperature drop rate of combustion gas, fly ash concentration and its size were selected as parameters influencing the discharged amount of metallic species. In general, the coagulation between the newly formed metal particles and the fly ash particles was much greater than that between the metal particles themselves or between the fly ash particles themselves. It was also found that the amount of metallic species discharged into the atmosphere was increased due to coagulation. While most of PbO vapors produced from the combustion were eliminated due to combined effect of condensation and coagulation, the highly volatile species, PbCl$_{2}$ and SnCl$_{4}$ vapors tended to discharge into the atmosphere without experiencing either the condensation or the coagulation. For Sn vapors the tendency was between that of PbO vapors and that of PbCl$_{2}$ or SnCl$_{4}$. To restrain the discharged amount of hazardous metallic species, the coagulation should be restrained, the number concentration and the size of pre-existing fly ash particles should be increased, and the temperature drop rate of combustion gas should be kept low.

Investigation of Vaporized Kerosene Injection in a Supersonic Model Combustor

  • This paper report our preliminary results of characterizing the jet structures of kerosene injection into quiescent atmosphere and a Mach 2.5 crossflow at various preheat temperature. A heating system has been designed and tested that can prepare heated kerosene of 0.8 kg up to 670 K at a pressure of 5.5 ㎫. Temperature measurement near the injector shows that the temperature of pressurized kerosene can be kept constant during the experimental duration. Comparison of kerosene jet structures in the preheat temperature range of 290-550 K demonstrates that with injection pressure of 4 ㎫ the jet plume turns into vapor phase completely at injection temperature of 550 K, while keeping the penetration depth essentially unchanged. The results suggest that the injection of vaporized fuel would improve the performance of a liquid hydrocarbon-fueled supersonic combustor because the evaporation process is now omitted.
