It is becoming increasingly difficult for engines using conventional fuels and combustion techniques to meet stringent emission norms. The homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) concept is being evaluated on account of its potential to control both smoke and NOx emissions. However, HCCI engines face problems of combustion control. In this work, a single cylinder water-cooled diesel engine was operated in the HCCI mode. Diesel was injected during the suction stroke($0^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$ degrees aTDC) using a special injection system in order to prepare a nearly homogeneous charge. The engine was able to develop a BMEP(brake mean effective pressure) in the range of 2.15 to 4.32 bar. Extremely low levels of NOx emissions were observed. Though the engine operation was steady, poor brake thermal efficiency(30% lower) and high HC, CO and smoke were problems. The heat release showed two distinct portions: cool flame followed by the main heat release. The low heat release rates were found to result in poor brake thermal efficiency at light loads. At high brake power outputs, improper combustion phasing was the problem. Fuel deposited on the walls was responsible for increased HC and smoke emissions. On the whole, proper combustion phasing and a need for a well- matched injection system were identified as the important needs.

Controlled auto ignition (CAI) combustion, also known as HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition), offers the potential to simultaneously improve fuel economy and reduce emission. CAI-combustion was achieved in a single cylinder gasoline DI engine, with a cylinder running in a CAI mode. Standard components were used the camshafts which had been modified in order to restrict the gas exchange process. The effects of air-fuel ratio, residual EGR rate and injection timing such as early injection and late injection on the attainable CAI combustion region were investigated. The effect that injection timings on factor such as start of combustion, combustion duration and heat release rate was also investigated. From results early injection caused the mixture to ignite earlier and burn more quickly due to the exothermic reaction during the recompression and gave rise to good mixing of the fuel-air.
In this study, the CH4/air lean-rich combustion system with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) was investigated to explore the potential for lowering pollutant emissions. To achieve this purpose, experiments of lean-rich combustion system with EGR were conducted to measure the changes in the characteristics of the pollutant emission and flame shape with various equivalence ratios and EGR rates. Here, this study was applied to the fuel distribution ratio of 3:1 for the formation of the lean and rich flames. Additionally, the results were compared with $CH_4$/air lean premixed combustion system. The results show that flame shape of lean-rich combustion system was determined by lean and rich equivalence ratios (${\Phi}_L$ and ${\Phi}_R$) and stratified flame was formed with increasing ${\Phi}_R$. According to the pollutant emission characteristics based on experimental results, the NOx and CO emission index (EINOx and EICO) decreased with increasing EGR rate. Especially, in the range needed to form a stable flame, the reduction rates of EINOx and EICO were approximately 47% and 48% for an EGR rate of 25%, global equivalence ratio of 0.85 and ${\Phi}_L$ of 0.80 compared with lean premixed combustion system (${\Phi}$ = 0.78).

This study was objected to evaluate the potential impact on the groundwater environment of the coal bottom ash used as fill materials on the land surface. From four coal-fired power plants, bottom-ashes were collected and analyzed through sequential extraction and column leaching tests following the meteoric water mobility procedure. The column tests shown leaching heavy metals including Pb, As, B, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, Ba, Sr, Sb, V, Cr, Mo, and Hg. The relatively high concentrations of B, Sr, Ba, and V in leachate were attributed to both the higher concentrations in the bottom ash and the relatively higher portion of leachable state, sorbed state, of metals. Bottom-ash samples from the D-plant only show high leaching potential of sulfate ($SO_4$), probably originated from the coal-combustion process, called the Fluidized Bed Combustion. Consequently, to manage recycling bottom ashes as fill materials, an evaluation system should be implemented to test the leaching potentials of metals from the ashes considering the absolute amount of metals and their state of existence in ashes, and the coal-combustion process.

The Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) combustion is currently under intensive investigation because of its potential to increase thermal efficiency while greatly decreasing NOx and p.M. In order to account for the thermal boundary layer effects, the two-zone model has been developed to analyze the combustion characteristics of HCCI engine. The detailed chemistry are represented by the GRI mechanism 3.0 involving 53 species and 325reactions. The present combustion model has been validated against the experimental results. Computations are also made for the wide-range operating conditions of HCCI engine.
GTL (Gas To Liquid) has the potential to be used in diesel engines as a clean alternative fuel due to advantages in emission reduction, particularly soot reduction. Since the physical properties of GTL fuel differ from those of diesel fuel to some extent, studying how this difference in characteristics of GTL and diesel fuels affects spray and combustion in diesel engines is important. In this study, visual investigation of sprays and flames from GTL and diesel fuels in a vessel simulating diesel combustion was implemented. The effects of various parameters and conditions, such as injection pressure, chamber temperature and pilot injection on liquid-phase fuel length and auto-ignition delay were investigated. It was determined that GTL has a somewhat shorter liquid-phase fuel length, which explains why there is less contact between the fuel liquid-phase and flame for GTL fuel compared to diesel fuel.

Straight vegetable oil (SVO) is widely recommended as fuel for diesel engines in general and especially for marine diesel engines. However, SVOs used directly as fuel for diesel engines may cause problems for the engines; SVOs blended with diesel oil are a better choice. To widen understanding of the possibility of using blended SVOs as fuel alternatives, this paper presents results of experimental research on the combustion of blended straight vegetable oil in a marine diesel engine's cylinders. Results show that the fuel combustion process have the same curves as in simulations and, in the case of using blended fuels with up to 20% palm oil, the test diesel engine technical parameters such as engine output, exhaust gas temperatures, and specific fuel consumption are very similar to those of diesel oil (DO). Based on these results, marine diesel engines are strong potential applications and particularly recommended for the use of SVO blends.

As the exhaustion of petroleum resources and air pollution problems are getting serious recently, there are growing interests in premixed diesel engines which have the potential of achieving a more homogeneous mixture near TDC compared to conventional diesel engines. Early studies have shown that the fuel injection frequency and spray angle affected the mixture formation and combustion in a HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engine. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between combustion and mixture formations by injection timing and frequency using a narrow angle injector, NADI (Narrow Angle Direct Injection). In this study, we found that the fuel injection timing and injection frequency affect the mixture formations and then affect combustion in the HCCI engine.
Gas motion within the engine cylinder is one of the major factors controlling the fuel-air mixing and combustion processes in diesel engines. In this paper, a special swirl-chamber is designed and applied to a DI (direct injection) diesel engine to generate a strong swirl motion thus enhancing gas motion. Compression, combustion and expansion strokes of this DI diesel engine with the swirl-chamber have been simulated by CFD software. The simulation model was first validated through comparisons with experimental data and then applied to do the simulation of the spray and combustion process. The velocity and temperature field inside the cylinder showed the influences of the strong swirl motion to spray and combustion process in detail. Cylinder pressure, average temperature, heat release rate, total amount of heat release, indicated thermal efficiency, indicated fuel consumption rate and emissions of this DI diesel engine with swirl-chamber have been compared with that of the DI diesel engine with $\omega$-chamber. The conclusions show that the engine with swirlchamber has the characteristics of fast mixture formulation and quick diffusive combustion; its soot emission is 3 times less than that of a $\omega$-chamber engine; its NO emission is 3 times more than that of $\omega$-chamber engine. The results show that the DI diesel engine with the swirl-chamber has the potential to reduce emissions.
Combustion chamber systems using spray impinged on walls have been studied for improving combustion characteristics in high speed direct injection diesel engines. The fuel spray injected in a small combustion chamber may be easily impinged and deposited on the wall. The fuel deposit has been considered as the cause for unburned emission due to difficulty of fuel-air mixing. In this paper w-shaped combustion chamber which has four raised pips on the side wall is introduced and discussed by comparing with conventional chamber with no pips. The computer code employing new spray-wall interaction model in general non-orthogonal grids is used in here. The model is applied into the new chamber shape with raised pips. In this chamber system four-hole nozzle is used, and the sprays injected from the each hole impact on lands raised from the chamber wall surface. After impacting, the sprays break up into much smaller drops and distribute over all the chamber space, instead of distributing just near the wall surface in conventional omega-shape. The results showed the potential of the w-shaped chamber employing pips for dispersing droplets so as tn avoid the fuel deposit regions.
