  • Diesel power plants are frequently used as a power supplier on the island and the isolated places where electric power is required. The heat efficiency of the low speed 2 stroke diesel engines is higher than those of 4 stroke diesel engines or other heat engines and further its mobility and durability is also better than other engines. They can be also easily repaired and maintained. With these advantages, demand for the use of the low speed 2 stroke diesel engine as a power source is increasing. However, there are some disadvantages with these diesel engines such as the bigger vibrating excitation forces generated by higher combustion pressure in cylinder and by the inertia force of the reciprocating parts. Further, engine vibrations are transfered into their adjacent buildings and manufacturing factories and eventually produces local vibrations. In order to reduce X-mode vibration of engine body, several methods have been introduced in the recent researches. In this paper, accordingly, a new vibrationcontrol method applying a synchrophaser and a top bracing between two diesel engines is adopted in order to reduce these structural vibrations of diesel power plant. It was experimentally verified that the structural vibrations were greatly reduced by the phase adjustment for the 6th order X-mode vibration with the synchrophaser and the top bracing.

  • The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors, solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type, with different electric driving characteristics So, three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were used in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. Also the CFD analysis was carried out for fuel behavior under high pressure in between needle and nozzle of solenoid-driven injector to know the condition of initial injection at experiment test. It was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection and temperature of injected fuel and electrical characteristic of the driven injector.

  • Hydrogen is seen as one of the important energy vectors of the next century. Hydrogen as a renewable energy source, provides the potential for a sustainable development particularly in the transportation sector. Hydrogen driven vehicles reduce both local as well as global emissions. The laboratory of transporttechnology (University of Gent) converted a GM/Crusader V-8 engine for hydrogen use. Once the engine is optimised, it will be built in a low-floor midsize hydrogen city bus for public demonstration. For a complete control of the combustion process and to increase the resistance to backfire (explosion of the air-fuel mixture in the inlet manifold), a sequential timed multipoint injection of hydrogen and an electronic management system is chosen. The results as a function of the engine parameters (ignition timing. injection timing and duration, injection pressure) we given. Special focus is given to topics related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel: ignition characteristics (importance of electrode distance), quality of the lubricating oil (crankcase gases with high contents of hydrogen), oxygen sensors (very lean operating conditions), noise reduction (configuration and length of inlet pipes). The advantages and disadvantages of a power regulation only by the air to fuel ratio (as for diesel engines) against a throttle regulation (normal gasoline or gas regulation) are examined. Finally the goals of the development of the engine are reached: power output of 90 kW, torque of 300 Nm, extremely low emission levels and backfire-safe operation.

  • Stringent emission regulations and increasing demands on reductions of noise and vibration of common rail direct injection (CRDI) diesel engines lead to the advent of piezo-actuated injectors. Compared with solenoid-actuated injectors, piezo-actuated injectors generate greater force and give faster response time, resulting in more accurate and faster injections. The accurate and fast response of an injector can offer an opportunity to control the combustion process and pollutant formation. In this study, the mathematical model of a piezo-actuated injector is developed. An estimator of the injection rate of the piezo-actuated injector is designed based on this model. The sliding mode theory is applied to the estimator design in order to overcome model uncertainties. The injector model and the estimator are verified by the injection experiments in an injector test bench. The simulation and the experimental results show that the proposed sliding mode observer can effectively estimate the injection timing and the injection rate of the piezo-actuated injector.

  • The heat rejection to coolant is a dominant factor for building vehicle cooling system such as radiator and cooling fan. Since the vehicle cooling system also has effects on fuel consumption and noise, the study of heat rejection to coolant has been emphasized. However, the study on heat rejection to coolant has been mainly focused on the field that related to the characteristics of combustion and localized heat loss. It is no much of use in design for the entire cooling system because it is focused on such a specific point. In this work, the heat rejection rate to coolant for four different engines are obtained to derive a simple heat transfer empirical formula that can be applied to the engine cooling system design, and it is compared with the other studies. Also, to observe effects of engine operation factors and heat transfer factors on coolant, we measured the metal temperature and the heat rejection rate. The heat rejection to coolant does not depend significantly upon the coolant flowrate, but mainly upon the amount of air fuel mixture and the air fuel ratio as long as the composition of coolant does not change. The reduction of heat rejection to coolant did not effectively improve the fuel consumption, but was mostly converted to raise the exhaust gas temperature and the oil temperature.

  • Dynamic Radioscopy technique was developed to observe internal phenomena of motors during firings. For use of this technique, generator and image box consisting of conversion screen, mirror, and video camera were designed and fabricated at our laboratory, and static firing tests were conducted to small motors. Protection devices against vibration and noise induced from during combustion were also made and their performances were evaluated with reference to the vibration criteria. Test results have shown that the vibration levels at concerned points were measured less than vibration criteria, and the internal phenomena during firings were also observed clearly.

  • The primary objective of this study is to truly understand exciting forces of the in-line 4 cylinders engine. Exciting forces of the engine apply a source of the vehicle NVH(Noise, Vibration, Harshness). To understand exciting forces, first was governed theoretical equations for single cylinder engine. And this theoretical equations was programming using MATLAB software. To compare theoretical analysis value, was applied MSC.ADAMS software. To determined the specification of engine(2,000cc, in-line 4) was applied ADAMS/Engine module. And this specification for engine was applied ADAMS/View and MATLAB software. The geometry model for ADAMS/View analysis was produced by the 3-D design modeling software. After imported 3-D model, each rigid body was jointed suitable. Under idle speed for engine, was analysed. The results of analysis are fairly well agreed with those of three analysis method. Using MATLAB software proposed in this study, engine exciting fores can be predicted. Also using ADAMS/Engine module and ADAMS/View software, engine exciting forces can be predicted.

  • In this study, the dynamic environment of satellite consists of excessive vibration at low frequency and irregular acceleration transferred by launch vehicle structure. Excessive vibration at low frequency is generally approximated by a sinusoidal wave from 100Hz to 200Hz and primarily used to preliminary design The random vibration is created by structural vibration due to the combustion of launch vehicle, separation stage and external aerodynamic noise. these are transferred to the adapter structure between satellite and launch vehicle through the structure of launch vehicle. random vibration is being specified for acceptance tests, screening tests, and qualification tests, because it has been shown that random vibration more closely represents the true environments in which the electronic equipment must operate.

  • The state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH) estimation of batteries play important roles in managing batteries for automotive applications. However, an accurate state estimation of a battery is difficult to achieve because of certain factors, such as measurement noise, highly nonlinear characteristics, strong hysteresis phenomenon, and diffusion effect of batteries. In certain vehicular applications, such as idle stop-start systems (ISSs), significant errors in SOC/SOH estimation may lead to a failure in restarting a combustion engine after the shut-off period of the engine when the vehicle is at rest, such as at a traffic light. In this paper, a dual extended Kalman filter algorithm with a dynamic equivalent circuit model of a lead-acid battery is proposed to deal with this problem. The proposed algorithm adopts a battery model by taking into account the hysteresis phenomenon, diffusion effect, and parameter variations for accurate state estimations of the battery. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified through experiments by using an absorbed glass mat valve-regulated lead-acid battery and a battery sensor cable for commercial ISS vehicles.

  • Large eddy simulation code was developed to predict the turbulent flows over backward-facing steps including a recirculating flow phenomena. Localized dynamic ksgs-equation model was employed as a LES subgrid model and the LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting of 16 processors to reduce computational costs. The results of laminar flow showed qualitative and quantitative agreements between current simulations and experimental results availablein literatures. The simulation of the turbulent flows also yielded reasonable results. From these results, it can be expected that developed LES code will be very useful to analyze the combustion in stabilities and noise of a practical combustor in the future.
