  • There arc two methods to evaluate the combustion product, that is analysis method and measurement method. Properties of the combustion products, constituents, and quanties, can be used to calculate boiler efficiency and beat losses. Using combustion evaluation methods combustion calculation were performed at certain condition and analyze the results. In this paper by comparing the results between two methods, deviation, correction and possibility of site application were confirmed

  • Pyro-process of solids is the way to heat solid materials under high temperature. In this processing, energy efficient use is one of the main concerns due to its high energy consumption of bulk materials. To calculate the energy use of processes, heat & mass balance in simplified 0-dimensional model was performed. Energy calculation by this simplified model can lead to confusion due to simplification. Thus, it is necessary to understand considerations of energy analysis. In this study, cement manufacturing as a very common example of pyro-processing of solids, was introduced for explaining considerations of energy analysis for energy efficient use.

  • As the user demand for power plants becomes various, design objective becomes complicated. To review the system feasibility, system objective and evaluation criteria need to be newly defined. In this study, engineering design procedure of the multi-purpose power plant, such as barge-mounted combined cycle power plant with $CO_2$ capture, was shown as a previous work for the feasibility review of the system alternatives. For the system design, heat and mass balance for each system configuration was firstly performed. Using the thermal analysis results, conceptual design of system alternatives was carried out. And then, preliminary design of the major equipment was done. The engineering calculation results of this study would be used as the evaluation data for system feasibility review.

  • Co-combustion of syngas in an existing boiler can be one of the options for replacing conventional fossil fuel with alternative fuels such as waste and biomass. This study is aimed to investigate effects of syngas cocombustion on combustion characteristics and boiler efficiency. An experimental study was performed for a pilot-scale furnace with 4 oil burners. Tests were conducted with mixture-gas as a co-combustion fuel and heavy oil as a main fuel. The mixture-gas was composed of 15% CO, 7% $H_2$, 3% $CH_4$ and 75% $N_2$ for simulating syngas from air-blown gasification. And LHV of the mixture-gas was 890 kcal/$Nm^3$. Temperature distribution in the furnace and flue gas composition were measured for various heat replacement ratio by the mixture gas. Heat loss through the wall was also carried out through heat & mass balance calculation, in order to obtain informations related to boiler efficiency. Experimental results show that similar temperature distribution and flue gas composition can be obtained for the range of 0~20% heat replacement by syngas. NOx concentration is slightly decreased for higher heat replacement by the syngas because fuel NOx is decreased in the case. Meanwhile, heat loss is a bit decreased for higher heat replacement by the syngas, which implies that boiler efficiency can be a bit decreased when syngas co-combustion is applied to a boiler.

  • Calculation equations of fired fuel comsumption rating at boiler can lead from combustion anal-ysis and boiler heat balance using mass & energy conservations. By comparing calculation equation results with those of measurement, we can confirm the deviation of fuel consumption rate, and correction rate, and correction degree, and can also establish the proven technology to apply the equation at the site. We applied fuel rate equation to the operating power plant and recorded $2.4\%\;&\;1.5\%$ of deviation at each coal and oil fired boilers. This range of deviation is regarded as trustable to apply the fuel consumption equation to the actual site.

  • Heat and mass balance process modeling has been conducted for a coal-firing power plant to be used as a testbed facility for development of various plant systems and equipment. As the material and design of the boiler tube bundle and fuel conversion to the biomass have become major concerns, the process modeling is required to incorporate those features in its calculation. The simulation cases for two different generation load show the satisfying results compared to the operational data from the actual system. Based on the established process conditions, the hypothetical case using wood pellet has also been simulated. Additional calculations for the tube bundle has been conducted regarding the changes in the tube material and design.

  • An one-zone heat release analysis was studied for a 6 cylinder direct injetction compressionignition engine. The heat transfer constants in this anlysis were calibrated to match the measured fuel energy at 1,000 rpm full load, which was the fuel mass multiplied by the fuel's heating value. The integrated gross heat release values were close to the measured fuel energy at various full load operating conditions. The combustion inefficiency from this calculation was proportional to the smoke of exhaust gas.

  • Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has developed a compact coal-gasification system to accumulate our experiment skills. The combustion furnace for residual oil was modified as a small size coal gasifier. Recently, coal feeding system was also upgraded to control coal feed rate more accurately. Our research group has conducted several experiments to find out the effect of $O_2$/coal ratio on the cold gas efficiency. Furthermore, the effect of $N_2$/coal ratio on the transport characteristics was also studied. According to the calculation of heat and mass balance, the cold gas efficiency was estimated to the maximum at $O_2$/coal ratio of around 0.73. But small size gasifier such as ours required higher value of $O_2$/coal ratio than that of the theoretical estimation. On the optimal $N_2$/coal ratio, we noticed that the coal feed rate was intimately related with the transporting gas pressure and the pipe diameter.

  • Source contribution for VOCs collected in Seoul metropolitan area was conducted using PAMs (Photochemical assessment monitoring system) data and CMB(Chemical Mass Balance) model8.0, in order to estimate spatial and temporal variations of VOCs source contribution in that area, and also to compare with corresponding emission inventory. VOCs data used in model calculation were collected at 6 different sites of PAMs(Seokmori, Guwoldong, Simgokdong, Bulgwangdong, Jeongdong and Yangpyeong) and 22 out of 56 VOCs species were analyzed from June 2002 to march 2003 and used for CMB model estimation. The result showed that vehicle exhaust, coating and energy combustion were important sources of VOCs in Seoul metropolitan area, averaging 32.6%, 25.5% and 25.1%, respectively. In this study as well as other references, it was revealed that vehicle exhaust is the main contributor of urban area VOCs, but there is remarkable contrast between emission inventory and model estimation. Vehicle exhaust portion is seriously underestimated while coating is usually overestimated in emission estimates, compared to CMB results. Therefore, it is considered to assert and confirm the uncertainty of emission estimates and clarify the distinction between two other source apportionment methods.
