  • The non-combustible RI wastes disposed of in hospital every year emit ${\gamma}$-ray or ${\beta}$-ray but their activities are very low to the extent of background. Development of more simple methods is needed because the conventional detection methods are so ineffective and complex. In this study, to solve this problem, detection method using efficiency curve for ${\gamma}$-ray emitting radioactive wastes measurement is proposed and experimental detection efficiency equation is also determined through HPGe's standard specimen measurement. For ${\beta}$-emitting radioisotopes detection, new measurement method using detection efficiency estimated by Monte Carlo simulation and SBD measurements is also proposed. According to the results of this paper, the unknown activity of low-level radioactive wastes without LSC requiring the preparation of standard sample and measurement for standard source detection efficiency could be determined efficiently and simply about ${\pm}17%$ in errors by using the theoretical detection efficiency and the SBD measurement result.

  • A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study was carried out to identify and improve the environmental aspects associated with the present incineration system of spent Li-ion batteries (LIBs) in Korea. The environmental impact associated with the landfill of the incineration ash was also assessed in this study, while so far it was excluded in most studies. It was found out that the $CO_{2}$ emission from the electricity generation as well as the incineration process and heavy metals emissions to air and water accounted for about 90% of total environmental impacts. In particular, the effect of the emission of heavy metals were dominant. In oder to improve the current incineration system environmentally, it is needed to incinerate the wastes like spent LIBs which contained relatively high portion of heavy metals separately from other combustible wastes. On the other hand, the effect of the landfill of ash after incineration was insignificant since the ash from the incineration process was chemically stable.

  • The cement industry has been contributing to solve the wastes problem by using various combustible wastes as alternative fuel to replace natural coal. To use more alternative fuels such as waste plastics, in the cement manufacturing process, it is necessary to stably burn alternative fuels and reduce air emissions such as NOx. This study is a case study on the multi-stage combustion calciner process, which is a technology that decreases the amount of NOx while increasing the use of alternative fuels. This study is a case study on the multi-stage combustion process, a technology that reduces the amount of harmful air emissions such as NOx while increasing the use of alternative fuels. Along results of comparing before and after applying the technology to actual cement manufacturing facilities, the amount of coal consumption decreased by 38 %, waste plastics consumption increased by 122 %, and NOx emissions decreased by 17 %. Results show that increasing the use of alternative fuels and reducing NOx emissions by multi-stage combustion is effective.

  • Bomb calorimeter was developed for measuring the calorific value of combustible matter such as wastes. The calorimeter consist of bomb, stirred-water type bucket, thermometer and ignition circuit. Operation and performance of the calorimeter have been tested experimentally. In the present study, calorific values of light oil, lamp oil and bunker C oil is measured using the bomb calorimeter. Mass of the sample is fixed at lg, and oxygen pressure in the bomb is used as an experimental parameter. Sample in the oxygen bomb is burned with electrically heated Ni-Cr wire of 100mm in length, and temperature of water in the bucket become increased by $5^{\circ}C$ during about 30min. Calorific value of the sample is calculated with the temperature difference of water. Combustion tests, such as the record of temperature history and the inspection of remnants, are performed at 4, 6, 8 and 10 atm of the oxygen pressure. From the test results, oxygen pressure in the bomb must be over 10atm for complete combustion.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to enhance sales promotion efficiency for using solid refuse fuel facilities. Renewable energy technology using Solid Refuse Fuel (SRF) is an economic efficiency technology that recovers waste by burning various wastes. A survey on the pollutants discharged from the solid fuels facilities was investigated so that the SRF facilities could be expanded, distributed and reflected in the policy. Research design, data, and methodology: In this study, 9 business sites using SRF and Bio-SRF as main raw materials were investigated for 2 years. The characteristics of target business sites such as the type of fuel used, combustion method, combustion temperature, daily fuel consumption and environmental prevention facilities were studied. Results: The average pollution & ammonia concentration of Bio-SRF facilities was found to be 88.15% higher than that of SRF facilities. But the average acetaldehyde concentration of SRF facilities was found to be 88.15% higher than that of Bio-SRF facilities. Conclusions: The main issue is how much electric power generation using combustible materials affects air pollution. The waste recycling law provides the standard value according to the fuel property, but there is a considerable gap with the mixed fuel. Therefore, for efficient utilization of facilities using solid fuel products, additional research is needed to improve the distribution structure of exhaust pollutants is needed.

  • A bench scale incineration process for the burnable radwaste has been constructed and operated at KAERI as a self-surpported development of incineration technology. The purposes of operating the process are to get experience in incineration, to analyze the characteristics of combustion and to test the performance of off-gas treatment units. Simulated paper and polyethylene wastes were incinerated. Volume reduction ratio and decontamination factor of the process have been determined to observe the economical efficiency and operational capability of the process. A methodology to estimate the acceptance limit of specific activity to an incineration facility by using a decontamination factor and to calculate the volume reduction ratio of the facility is introduced. The acceptance criteria for different radionuclides in the combustible waste at the bench scale incineration process are suggested using this methodology.

  • The waste treatment fee and energy production effect of Wonju city RDF plant, the first RDF manufacturing plant in Korea, were investigated in the study. All plant operation data, like total weight of received wastes, produced RDF and separated rejects in processes were fully recorded for mass balance calculation of the plant in 2009. Also all consumed oil and electricity were recorded for energy balance calculation. The results showed that the waste treatment fee not including the RDF sales price of 25,000 won/ton-RDF was 116,573 won/ton-MSW and it went down to 105,298 won when included the RDF price. Produced RDF was 40.2% of total received waste in weight. Three components analysis by mass balance calculation of total received waste showed that Wonju city's MSW was 32.4% of combustible, 37.5% of water and 30.1% of incombustible respectively. Energy effect was found that total amount of produced energy was about 4 times more than that of consumed energy.

  • For the safety assessment of the demonstration-scale incineration plant for treating the combustible radioactive wastes, radiation doses of a worker and a residential individual were estimated. The demonstration plant showed a good performance of trial-burn tests using non-radioactive tracers with resulting In high mass reduction of around 40 times and very low emmission of dusts through a stack, which promised a high decontamination factor in an order of 10$^{7}$ . Based on the result s obtained from the trial-burns in the process, the estimation of radiation dose for workers and general publics near the plant was made using dose pathway calculation theories. The parametric values for calculation were selected from design and operational results of the process and from more conservative conditions In reference data. The estimated annual doses for workers and residential indivisuals were 3.07 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ and 4.35 X 10$^{-8}$ $\mu$Sv/y, respectively, which were high enough to operate the process when comparing with the allowable dose limit in the regulation. The dose calculation models were quite applicable with showing an excellent safety for the process.

  • Now our ocean environment pollution is very serious. Its harm hinders in marine breeding and the safe navigation of ships at the coast. We have used an assembly system for a measure taken against environment pollution like this. But, here are some problems awaiting solution. First, most of combustible materials among ocean waste are high polymer, so it is necessary some special equipment to incinerate them. In the process we can't overlook air pollution by exhaust gas. Also, when we reclaim these wastes, we remember that they can't be decomposed naturally and leaking water may pollute soil. Thus now a days new treatment method has been developed, it recycles and doesn't product secondary pollution materials by recovering oil from pyrolysis. For it, this study investigated chemicalㆍphysical properties of wastes. And it found condition of recovering the most oil. Also it probed that the variation of temperature raising speed affects the weight reduction characteristics of wastes. Also, while studying recovered oil by waste pyrolysis and the rate of non-condensing gas in accordance with the variation of temperature raising speed. Finally we had confidence the development of pyrolysis oil recovery would succeed because we carried out evaluation at an economic point of view about it.
