  • To provide successful treatment policy and to apply sources for establishing plan, municipal solid wastes quantity was investigated as physical and chemical characteristics from Sunchon city. Results are like following after checking out characteristics by seasons, type. The average specific weight of municipal solid wastes is $219kg/m^3$ for combustible wastes, $391kg/m^3$ for non-combustible. Food wastes of combustible wastes contained moisture of 38.1% as standard of moisture weight per real weight, 49.6% moisture is contained in non-combustible wastes except food wastes moisture. Moisture, volatile and ash are contented by 16.9%, 68.1% and 15.0% in combustible wastes except food wastes. That means combustible wastes are available a refuse incineration. The low calorific value of only combustible waste is 2,962kca1/kg that is good for refuse incineration.

  • A series of fire tests involving realistic solid combustible materials was conducted to quantify the heat release rate and investigate the fire growth characteristics during the initial fire growth stage. For these tests, single/double wood cribs, urethane cushion having polypropylene covers and wood crib on nylon carpet with urethane carpet padding were used as a fuel source. The fire growth coefficient of the solid combustible materials was quantified and the fire growth characteristics were compared with the $t^2$ fire scenario. The mean effective heat of combustion was evaluated by the total mass loss of fuel and total energy release concept and examined the effect of the ventilation and fire condition. The present study provides the practical information on the fire growth characteristics of solid combustible material to design to a set of fire scenarios for the fire risk analysis.

  • In this paper, catalytic combustible gas sensor was fabricated and tested under flammable gases such as CH$_4$and $C_4$H$_{10}$by using Pt coil as a heater and/or temperature sensing element. Fine $Al_2$O$_3$powder was used for a bead and Pt, Pd noble metal powder for a catalyst. Resistance variation of Pt wire was traced by the changes of the gas concentrations in a chamber. Output voltage was then monitored to obtain the gas concentration from the resistance variation. In this experiment, MgO was used to protect cracks in the based and TiO$_2$to increase the sensitivity of the sensors. Water glass was also added to enhance the selectivity to the combustible gases.s.

  • This study measured the smouldering temperature of dust layer for various combustible natural polymer material by practical apparatus. The dust layer was either put on the preheated plate of constant temperature, or formed with cylinderical metal sleeve of various diameters and depths at room temperature and then heated up to a pre-determined smouldering temperature. Plots of arrival times versus smouldering temperature were made to compare the smouldering characteristics with kinds of dusts. The natural polymer material was divided into theree groups by characteristics of smouldering mechanism. This groups are cellulose group, lipide group and glucose group.

  • In this paper, the fire characteristics of circuit breakers for low voltage during switching arcs were analyzed according to the characteristics of combustible materials. Arc dispersion and ignition process were taken by high speed imaging system and digital camera. In this experiment, four resistors were connected as loads. To discover the fire characteristics of circuit breakers by combustible materials, ethanol and cotton were installed as combustibles near contacts respectively. In case of ethanol, fire broke out near the contacts while switch was turned on and turned off. Whereas, in case of cotton, fire broke out near deteriorated contacts while switch was turned off.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the Physicochemical characteristics of mined waste(separated waste and soil) and to predict environmental effect of an old landfill site located at north of Seoul. Municipal solid waster(MSW) had been disposed of at the old landfill site used in this study for about 2 years(1990-1992). The old landfill site selected for this study had accepted mainly municipal solid waste. The landfill-mined waste contained separated waste (40.9%) and soil(59.1%) by wet weight basis. The separated waste consisted of combustible(91.0%) and non-combustible(9.0%). The combustible waste was mainly non-biodegradable plastics. The low heating value of the separated combustible waste, which is calculated by Dulong's equation, was as high as 3,470kcal/kg. According to the Korean Extraction Procedure, separated waste and soil were proved to be not hazardous. The total content of heavy metal in the separated waste and soil met standard of California State, USA. Therefore the separated waste may be relandfilled at a sanitary landfill site and/or burned up at an incinerator, and the separated old soil may be used ad landfill cover-soil at a sanitary landfill site. Water quality of two streams was grade IV, of which water could be used as industrial and agricultural water. The streams near the landfill site might not be contaminated by leachate from the old landfill site. It was estimated that organic matter in the old landfill site would not be actively biodegraded within a short period of time.

  • The effects of binder content and silica sand content on the durability characteristics of lightweight polymer concretes are examined. As a result, the flame lingering times using unsaturated polyester resin and non-combustible polyester resin were 60∼120 and 0∼4 seconds respectively, and the combustion lengths were 9∼11 mm and 0∼3 mm, respectively. Thus it is believed that the lightweight polymer concrete was incombustible and the light weight polymer concrete in which non-combustible material was added was perfectly non-combustible. The percent of original mass of lightweight polymer concrete, according to the freezing-thawing experiment, was below 0.3 %, which was much less than that of cement concrete. The pluse velocity, for the case of the binder content 28 %, showed the minimum decreasing rate for the lightweight polymer concrete with silica sand content of 50 %. The higher the binder content, the greater the durability. That is much higher than other material and believed that the freezing-thawing was suppressed by a low absorption.

  • Recently developed a variety of architectural interior decoration according hwadoeme type of toxic gases generated during fire also are becoming diversified, resulting in fatal casualties occurred in the trend is also being increased. During a fire, toxic gas that is generated varies depending on the combustible material occurs. However, all combustible materials, including carbon, incomplete combustion of carbon monoxide which is generated in the most common toxic gases can be seen as one. Accordingly, in this study of organic solids that are generated in case of fire toxic gases, and briefly discuss the characteristics of the risks and, by far the most common Co gas for measures to prevent human casualties, seolbijeok, the temperature dependence, divided into four aspects of administrative daechaekdeung explained.

  • Up to the 60's cigarette paper commercial grades were simply described as ' non combustible ', ' combustible ' or ' extra-combustible '. It was assumed that combustibility of the paper itself was correlated with cigarette combustibility. Since then, the characteristics of cigarette paper, like natural porosity and burning additives, which influence truly cigarette combustibility, have been described by various authors and it became clear to cigarette designers that paper combustibility was not generally a significant factor governing cigarette combustibility. On the other hand, for Roll Your Own(RYO)wrapping papers, the ECPCI has proposed to the CORESTA RYO Task Force to use paper combustibility, and specially the LCT test, to classify papers between low and high smoke delivery, and a new Task Force on PAPER COMBUSTIBILITY was recently set up to develop a recommended method. The objective of this presentation Is to show results demonstrating that for paper used on cigarettes, there is NO GENERAL CORTRELATION between PAPER and CIGARETTE combustibility. We will also show results confirming that, for the specific group of RYO booklet papers containing no burning additives, there is a correlation between paper combustibility and FCSA's Combustibility/smoke delivery. This apparent discrepancy will be explained by reviewing the role played by the various characteristics of cigarette paper in governing cigarette combustibility.
