  • In the study, experiments are performed in the interaction region combined with wave and current to investigate the characteristics of local scour around submarine pipelines. Wave generator and current generator are used for the experiments and two current directions were used; co-direction and counter direction to the wave. The local scour depths around the pipeline are obtained according to the various pipe diameters(D), wave periods(T), wave heights(H), and current velocities(V). The experiments show that the maximum equilibrium local scour depth increases with pipe diameter, wave period, wave height, and current velocity. Using the experimental results, the correlations of scour depth and parameters such as Shields parameter($\theta$), Froude number(Fr), period parameter, Keulegan-Carpenter number(KC), Ursell number($U_R$), modified Ursell number($U_{RP}$) and ratio of velocities($U_{c}/(U_{c}+U_{m})$) are analyzed. In the interaction region combined with waves and currents, Froude number and Shields parameter are found the main parameters to cause the local scour around the submarine pipelines and this means that current governs the scour within any limits of the currents.

  • In the study, experiments are performed in the mixing region combined wave and current to investigate the characteristics of local scour around a slender pile. Wave generator and current generator are used for the experiments and currents are co-directions with the waves. The local scour depths around the pipeline are obtained according to the various pipe diameters, wave periods, wave heights, and current velocities. The experiments show that the maximum equilibrium local scour depth increases with pipe diameter, wave period, wave height, and current velocity. Using the experimental results, the correlations of scour depth and parameters such as Shields parameter ($\theta$), Froude number (Fr), Keulegan-Carpenter number (KC), Ursell number ($U_R$), modified Ursell number ($U_{RP}$) and ratio of velocities ($U_c/U_c+U_m$) are analyzed. In the mixing region combined with waves and currents, The Froude number of single parameters is the main parameter to cause the local scour around a slender pile due to waves and current and this means that current governs the scour within any limits of the currents.

  • Recommendations are given to improve the efficiency of radiation protection of transport casks for SNF transportation. The attenuation of ${\gamma}$-quanta of long-lived isotopes 134Cs, 137mBa(137Cs), 154Eu and 60Co by optimizing the thicknesses and arrangement of layers of Fe and Pb radiation shields of transport casks is studied. The fixed radiation shielding mass (fixed mass thickness) is chosen as the main optimization criterion. The effect of the placement order of Fe and Pb layers in a combined two-layer radiation shield with an equivalent thickness of 30 cm is studied in detail. It is shown that with the same mass thicknesses of the Fe and Pb layers, the placement of Fe in the first layer, and Pb - in the second one provides more than twofold attenuation of ${\gamma}$-quanta compared to the reverse placement: Pb - in the first layer, Fe - in the second. The increase in the efficiency of attenuation of ${\gamma}$-quanta for TC with combined shielding of Fe and Pb is shown to be achieved by designing the first layer of radiation shielding around the canister with SNF from Fe of the maximum possible thickness.

  • Thermal analysis of cryogenic-capable vessels with insulations have been carried out to store liquid hydrogen($LH_2$). The combined insulations of MLI(Multi-Layer Insulation) and VCS(Vapor-Cooled Shield) under high vacuum are considered in the analysis for various volumes of vessels. Vapor-Cooled Shields(VCS) are installed at cylinder wall as well as disc side of the $LH_2$ vessels. The results indicate that optimal distribution of boiloff vapor from $LH_2$ vessel into two sides of VCS exists based on the evaporation loss. As the volume of $LH_2$ vessel is increased, mass flow rate of boiloff is increased while the evaporation loss per unit volume is decreased.

  • This paper describes the design and evaluation of a noise suppressing hydrophone that is robust to external noise without sacrificing its performance as a receiver. To increase robustness of the receiver to the external noise, first, effects of location of external noise on its performance are analyzed with the finite element method (FEM). Based on the results, geometrical variations are implemented on the structure with additional air pockets and damping layers that work as acoustic shields or scatterers of the noise, and fourteen trial models are developed for the noise suppressing hydrophone structures. The results show that the effect of the external noise is most significant when it is applied to near the mid-side surface of the hydrophone housing. The external noise is isolated most efficiently when two thin damping layers combined with five air pockets are inserted to the circumference of the hydrophone housing. Overall, of the fourteen structural variations of the hydrophone, the best one shows about 87% reduction in the response of the original structure to external noise.

  • This study developed a metal filter and shielding device using FDM-based 3D printing to reduce the radiation exposure of the operator to the reproductive organs during C-arm-guided nerve blocking. Three filters made of copper (Cu), aluminum (Al), and nickel (Ni) were combined with a copper filament housing to create a composite shielding device. When the dose measurements were compared with and without the filter at 60, 80, and 100 kVp, Filter A 45%, Filter B 63%, and Filter C showed a high dose reduction rate of 74%. image quality was evaluated quantitatively Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR), Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and qualitatively (Likert scale), and although there was a slight decrease due to the use of the filter, the clinical impact was minimal. The developed filter effectively reduces operator radiation exposure during C-arm-guided nerve blocking, and the C filter shows high practicality and dose reduction ability. The implementation of these filters is expected to contribute to enhancing the operator's safety and minimizing radiation exposure.

  • This study was conducted to reduce the exposure dose to the breast and adjacent organs as the number of Mammography increased. Therefore, it has been designed a shield in lead, bismuth + tungsten, and bismuth that does not require to be equipped by the patient, in which each type of shield was compared and analyzed of radiation exposure dose to breast, thyroid, and eye. Using a mammography machine, optically stimulated luminescent dosimeter(OSLD) was inserted to bilateral breast, thyroid, and eye of a dosimetry phantom to measure dose radiated onto the phantom. Shielding device was made in different thickness of 2mm, 3mm, and 5mm and dose evaluation was performed by measuring the dose while using lead, bismuth, and bismuth + tungsten prosthesis. When each shields combined with shielding device, were compared of dose, all showed similar does reduction in the dose to breast, thyroid, and eye in both cranialcaudal and mediolateraloblique view. Based on the current study, bismuth and bismuth + tungsten can replace conventional lead shield and it is anticipated to safely and conveniently reduce radiation exposure to breast, thyroid, and eye with the shield that does not require to be equipped.
