  • The structural reliability assessment can be used to improve the reliability in the asset integrity management of the pipeline by using a geometric variation, mechanical characteristics, load change and operating condition as evaluation factors. When evaluating structural reliability, the failure probability of the natural gas pipe is evaluated by the relationship of the resistance of the pipe material to external loads. The failure probability of the natural gas pipe due to the combined stresses such as the internal pressure, thermal stress and bending stress was evaluated by using COMREL program. When evaluating the failure probability of the natural gas pipe, a buried depth of 1.5 to 30 m, a wheel load of 2.5 to 20 ton, a temperature difference of 45℃, an operating pressure of 6.86MPa, and a soil density of 1.8 kN/㎥ were used. The failure probabilities of the natural gas pipe were evaluated by the Von-Mises stress criterion as the maximum allowable stress criterion under the combined stresses.

  • Short-term load forecasting(STLF) for electric power demand is essential for stable power system operation and efficient power market operation. We improved STLF method by using hourly temperature as an input data. In order to using hourly temperature to STLF algorithm, we calculated temperature-electric power demand sensitivity through past actual data and combined this sensitivity to exponential smoothing method which is one of the STLF method. The proposed method is verified by case study for a week. The result of case study shows that the average percentage errors of the proposed load forecasting method are improved comparing with errors of the previous methods.

  • This study evaluates the reliability of present European codes in predicting the collapse load of columns made with perforated cold-formed steel (CFS) profiles under combined axial load and bending. To this aim, a series of experimental tests on slender open-section specimens have been performed at varying load eccentricity. Preliminarily, stub column tests have also been performed to calculate the effective section properties of the investigated profile. By comparison of experimental data with code-specified M-N strength domains, the authors demonstrate that present code formulations may underestimate the collapse load of thin-walled perforated open sections. The study is the first step of a wider experimental and numerical study aimed at better describing strength domains of perforated CFS open sections.

  • An iterative numerical computational algorithm is presented to design a plate of shell element subjected to membrane and flexural forces. Based on equilibrium consideration, equations for capacities of top and bottom reinforcements in two orthogonal directions have been derived. The amount of reinforcement is determined locally, i. e., for each sampling point, from the equilibrium between applied and internal forces. One case of design is performed for a hyperbolic paraboloid saddle shell (originally used by Lin and Scordelis) to check the design strength against a consistent design load, therefore, to verify the adequacy of design practice for reinforced concrete shells. Based on nonlinear analyses performed, the analytically calculated ultimate load exceeded the design ultimate load from 14-43% for an analysis with relatively low to high tension stiffening, ${\gamma}$ =5~20 cases. For these cases, the design method gives a lower bound on the ultimate load with respect to Lower bound theorem. This shows the adequacy of the current practice at least for this saddle shell case studied. To generalize the conclusion many more designs-analyses are performed with different shell configurations.

  • In this study, computational structural vibration analysis of helicopter search light exposing unsteady buffet load have been conducted using combined advanced numerical methods. Unsteady CFD method based on Navier-Stokes equations is used to predict viscous buffet load due to flow separation effects. Full three-dimensional finite element model is constructed in order to conduct static and structural dynamic analyses of the search light model for two different typical flight speeds. Also, the correct performance of the search light can be physically estimated to examine the actual lighting area considering the effects of structural deformations.

  • An upper bound elemental technique(UBET) has been carried out to predict the forming load, the deformation pattern and the extrude length of the lateral extrusion of a spider for the automotive universal joint. For the upper bound analysis, a kinematically admissible velocity field(KAVF) is proposed. From the proposed velocity field, the upper bound load, the deformation pattern and the average length of the extruded billets are determined by minimizing the total energy consumption rate which is a function of unknown velocities at each element. Experiments are carried out with antimony-lead billets at room temperature using the rectangular shape punch. The theoretical prediction of the forming load, the deformation pattern and the extruded length are good in agreement with the experimental results.

  • The room temperature and air conditioning load in the underground space have been investigated numerically by the unsteady heat conduction equation. The model room has 3 m in height and 10 m in width, and it's position in the underground depth are 0.5 m to 5 m. When the room was located around surface, the room temperatures were strongly influenced by the atmosphere. But the underground depth is more than 2 m, the yearly temperature amplitude was small and the temperature phase was delayed. Up to 5 m of the depth, the cooling and heating load was decreased rapidly, but over 10 m of the depth, the air conditioning load was constant.

  • In this study, composite laminate cantilever type cylindrical shells with edge-stiffeners are analyzed. A versatile 4-node flat shell element which is useful for the analysis of shell structures is used. An improved flat shell element is established by the combined use of the addition of non-conforming displacement modes and the substitute shear strain fields. Two models by load conditions are considered. Load type A and B are loaded by point load at the free edge and line load respectively. A various parameter examples are presented to obtain proper stiffened length and stiffened thickness of edge-stiffeners. It is shown that the thickness of shell can be reduced minimum 30% by appropriate edge-stiffeners.

  • This study is aimed to predict the fatigue life for pitch bearings under combined radial, thrust load and moment. In order to do this, a series of simulation such as bearing load distribution, initial surface stress, subsurface stress and fatigue analysis is needd. Fatigue life for pitch bearing can be predicted by using a bearing's material fatigue property.
