  • The load interaction effect can be best illustrated by the phenomenon of overload retardation. Some prediction methods for retardation are reviewed and the problems discussed in the present paper. The so-called under-load effect much of the retardation disappears if a very low level minimum stress follows the overload, is also of importance for a prediction model to work properly under random load spectrum. The concept of Interactive Zone (IZ) fully considering reversed plasticity during unloading was discussed. This IZ concept can be combined with existing models to derive some improved models that can naturally take account of the under-load effect. Some simulations by IZ improved models for test under complex load sequences including multiple overloads and both over/under loads are compared with test results. It is seen that the improvement by IZ concept greatly enhanced the ability of existing models to accommodate complex load interaction effects.

  • Numerical studies were carried out to investigate long-term behavior of flat plates, subjected to combined in-plane compressive and transverse loads. For the numerical studies, a computer program of nonlinear finite element analysis was developed. It can address creep and shrinkage as weel as geometrical and material nonlinearity, and also it can address various load combinations and loading sequences of transverse load, in-plane compressive load and time. This numerical method was verified by comparison with the existing experiments. Parametric studies were performed to investigate the strength variations of flat plates with four parameters; 1) loading sequence of floor load, compressive load and time 2) uniaxial and biaxial compression 3) the ratio of dead to live load 4) span length. Through the numerical studies, the behavioral characteristics of the flat plates and the governing load combinations were examined. These results will be used to develop a design procedure for the long-term behavior of flat plates in the future.

  • This paper presents external load disturbance compensation that used to deadbeat load torque observer and regulation of the compensation gain by parameter estimator As a result, the response of PMSM follows that of the nominal plant. The load torque compensation method is compose of a deadbeat observer To reduce of the noise effect, the post-filter, which is implemented by MA process, is adopted. The parameter compensator with RLSM(recursive least square method) parameter estimator is suggested to increase the performance of the load torque observer and main controller The proposed estimator is combined with a high performance load torque observer to resolve the problems. As a result, the proposed control system becomes a robust and precise system against the load torque and the parameter variation. A stability and usefulness, through the verified computer simulation, are shown in this paper.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the flat plates in deep basements, subjected to floor load and in-plane compressive load due to soil and hydraulic lateral pressure. For nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities is developed. The validity of the numerical model is established by comparison with existing experiments performed on plates simply supported on four edges. The flat plates to be studied are designed according to the Direct Design Method in ACI 318-95. Through numerical study on the effects of different load combinations and loading sequence, the load condition that governs the strength of the flat plates is determined. For plates under the governing load condition, parametric studies are performed to investigate the strength variations with reinforcement ratio, aspect ratio, concrete strength, and slenderness ratio. Based on the numerical results, the floor load magnification factor is proposed.

  • For anchored system applications, each ground anchor is tested after installation and prior to being put into service to loads that exceed the design. This load testing methodology, combined with specific acceptance criteria, is used to verify that the ground anchor can carry the design load without excessive deformations and that the assumed load transfer mechanisms have been properly developed behind the assumed critical failure surface. After acceptance, the ground anchor is stressed to a specified load and the load is locked-off. The two types of load tests conducted during the research program included performance test and creep test which were carried out in accordance with testing procedures by AASHTO(AASHTO 1990) and FHWA(Weatherby 1998) at Samsung-Dong 00 Site. Form the measurements, ultimate load and creep rate of anchors are proposed for straight shaft pressured grouted anchors in waste landfill. The load distribution on the grout was obtained from the measured strain data at each fraction of the ultimate load during the load tests.

  • Combined sewer overflows during rainfall events contain sewer sediments and surface pollutants. This can cause significant chemical, physical and biological problems to receiving watershed. However, there are no method that can commonly apply to decide criteria for controlling the pollutant load. In this study, it sets up the reduction goals of combined sewer overflow through long-term simulation using the rainfall-runoff model. From a review of domestic and foreign management standard of combined sewer overflow for this, it makes decision that 60% (phase 1), 85% (phase 2) of total pollutant load and frequency per year for reduction goals is more proper. Also, the result of analyzing long-term simulation (minimum 10 years) applied to research basin indicates that reduction goals of BOD pollutant load are 1,123 kg (phase 1) and 2,374 kg (phase 2), and overflow volumes for research objective achievement are $11,685m^3$ (phase 1) and $24,701m^3$ (phase 2).

  • Recently, flexible cages have been introduced in an attempt to absorb and reduce the abnormal load transfer along the anterior parts of the spine. They are designed to be used with the pedicle screw systems to allow some mobility at the index level while containing ROM at the adjacent level. In this study, a finite element (FE) study was performed to assess biomechanical efficacies of the flexible cage when combined with pedicle screws with flexible rods. The post-operated models were constructed by modifying the L4-5 of a previously-validated 3-D FE model of the intact lumbar spine (L2-S1): (1) Type 1, flexible cage only; (2) Type 2, pedicle screws with flexible rods; (3) Type 3, interbody fusion cage plus pedicle screws with rigid rods; (4) Type 4, interbody fusion cage plus Type 2; (5) Type 5, Type 1 plus Type 2. Flexion/extension of 10 Nm with a compressive follower load of 400N was applied. As compared to the Type 3 (62~65%) and Type 4 (59~62%), Type 5 (53~55%) was able to limit the motion at the operated level effectively, despite moderate reduction at the adjacent level. It was also able to shift the load back to the anterior portions of the spine thus relieving excessively high posterior load transfer and to reduce stress on the endplate by absorbing the load with its flexible shape design features. The likelihood of component failure of flexble cage remained less than 30% regardless of loading conditions when combined with pedicle screws with flexible rods. Our study demonstrated that flexible cages when combined with posterior dynamic system may help reduce subsidence of cage and degeneration process at the adjacent levels while effectively providing stability at the operated level.

  • This paper shows a comparative study for design of reinforced concrete boundary combined footings of trapezoidal and rectangular forms supporting two columns and each column transmits an axial load and a moment around of the axis X (transverse axis of the footing) and other moment around of the axis Y (longitudinal axis of the footing) to foundation to obtain the most economical combined footing. The real soil pressure acting on the contact surface of the footings is assumed as a linear variation. Methodology used to obtain the dimensions of the footings for the two models consider that the axis X of the footing is located in the same position of the resultant, i.e., the dimensions is obtained from the position of the resultant. The main part of this research is to present the differences between the two models. Results show that the trapezoidal combined footing is more economical compared to the rectangular combined footing. Therefore, the new model for the design of trapezoidal combined footings should be used, and complies with real conditions.

  • This study is an experimental comparison on the fact that the sinusoidal load, which has been used so far in the laboratory cyclic test, which is an important part of the liquefaction triggering study, is somewhat different from the phenomenon that causes the soil liquefaction during the earthquake loading. To this end, this study proposes a new type of combined sinusoidal load and compares it with experimental results to load the conventional sine wave. In the comparison, the shaking table tests were carried out and the sample in the tests was remolded with the relative density of 40%, which is a condition where liquefaction is easy to occur. Firstly, the conventional cyclic test was carried out under the condition that with the amplitude of sine wave was 0.3 g. Additionally, 3 types of tests were performed using the combination loads made up with 0.03 g sinusoidal load and 0.3g sinusoidal load. At that time, the loading time for the first sinusoidal load were changed with 5 seconds, 10 seconds, and 15 seconds. As a result, the test with the conventional sine wave and the test with the first sinusoidal loading for 5 seconds showed that the change of the pore water pressure gradually increased. But in the tests with the combined sinusoidal load which changed the first sinusoidal loading time with 10 and 15 seconds, it was found that the pore water pressure suddenly rose at a certain instant and liquefaction occurs. From the experimental comparison, it is judged that it is appropriate that the time of the first sine wave is over 10 seconds at the proposed combined load for the soil condition with relative density 40%.

  • This study is aimed to predict the fatigue life for bearings under combined radial, thrust and moment load. In order to do this, a series of simulation such as bearing load distribution, initial surface stress, subsurface stress and fatigue analysis is needed. And using the bearing's material fatigue property we can predict fatigue life for ball bearing.
