NUMERICAL SIMULATION ON FLUID-STRUCTURE INTERACTION OF A TWO-DIMENSIONAL ORBITING FLEXIBLE FOIL (선회하는 2차원 유연 날개의 유체-구조 상호작용 모사)

  • The hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method is applied to simulate fluid-structure interaction of a two-dimensional orbiting flexible foil. The elastic deformation of the flexible foil is modelled based on the dynamic equation of a thin-plate. At each time step, the locations and velocities of the Lagrangian control points on the flexible foil are used to reconstruct the boundary conditions for the flow solver based on the hybrid staggered/non-staggered grid. To test the developed code, the flow fields around a flapping elliptical wing are calculated. The time history of the vertical force component and the evolution of the vorticity fields are compared with recent other computations and good agreement is achieved. For the orbiting flexible foil, the vorticity fields are compared with those of the case without the deformation. The combined effects of the angle of attack and the orbit on the deformation are investigated. The grid independency study is carried out for the computed time history of the deformation at the tip.

Earthquake Response Control of a Building with a Tuned Liquid Damper Using Hybrid Experiment Method (하이브리드 실험법을 이용한 TLD가 설치된 건물의 지진응답 제어)

  • A real-time hybrid method, in which the experimental implementation and the numerical computation of a structure are simultaneously carried out in real-time and combined on-line, has been used as a dynamic testing technique of structure to investigate its dynamic behaviors. In this paper, an experimental hybrid method, which implements the earthquake response control of a building structure with a TLD by using only a TLD as an experimental part, is proposed and is experimentally verified through a shaking table test. In the proposed methodology, the whole building structure with a TLD is divided into the upper TLD and the lower structural parts as experimental and numerical substructures, respectively. At the moment, the control force acting between their interface is measured from the experimental TLD with shear-type load-cell which is mounted on shaking table. Shaking table vibrates the upper experimental TLD with the response calculated from the numerical substructure, which is subjected to the excitations of the measured interface control force at its top story and an earthquake input at its base. The experimental results show that the conventional method, in which both a TLD and a building model are physically manufactured and are tested, can be replaced by the proposed methodology with a simple experimental installation and a good accuracy for evaluating the control performance of a TLD.

Slump and Mechanical Properties of Hybrid Steel-PVA Fiber Reinforced Concrete (강섬유와 PVA 섬유로 하이브리드 보강된 콘크리트의 슬럼프 및 역학적 특성)

  • Sixteen concrete mixes reinforced with hybrid steel-polybinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and a control concrete mix with no fiber were tested in order to examine the effect of the micro and macro fibers on the slump and different mechanical properties of concrete. Main variables investigated were length and volume fraction of steel and PVA fibers. The measured mechanical properties of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete were analyzed using the fiber reinforcing index and compared with those recorded from monolithic steel or PVA fiber reinforced concrete. The initial slump of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete decreased with the increase of the aspect ratio and the volume fraction of fibers. In addition, splitting tensile strength, modui of rupture and elasticity, and flexural toughness index of concrete increased with the increase of the fiber reinforcement index. Modulus of rupture and flexural toughness index of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete were higher than those of monolithic fiber reinforced concrete, though the total volume fraction of hybrid fibers was lower than that of monolithic fiber. For enhancing the flexural toughness index of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete, using the steel fiber of 60 mm length was more effective than using the steel fibers combined with 60 mm and 30 mm lengths.

  • In this paper, we propose Self-organizing neurofuzzy networks(SONFN) and discuss their comprehensive design methodology. The proposed SONFN is generated from the mutually combined structure of both neurofuzzy networks (NFN) and polynomial neural networks(PNN) for model identification of complex and nonlinear systems. NFN contributes to the formation of the premise part of the SONFN. The consequence part of the SONFN is designed using PNN. The parameters of the membership functions, learning rates and momentum coefficients are adjusted with the use of genetic optimization.   • An adaptive tracking controller is presented for the vibration reduction of flexible manipulator employed in hazardous area by combining input shaping technique with sliding-mode control. The combined approach appears to be robust in the presence of severe disturbance and unknown parameter which will be estimated by least-square method in real time. In a maneuver strategy, it is found that a hybrid trajectory with a combination of low frequency mode and rigid-body mode results in better performance and is more efficient than the traditional rigid body trajectory alone which many researchers have employed. The feasibility of the adaptive tracking control approach is demonstrated by applying it to the simplified model of robot system. For the applications of the proposed technique to realistic systems, several requirements are discussed such as control stability and large system order resulted from finite element modeling.

Hybrid thermal seasonal storage and solar assisted geothermal heat pump systems for greenhouses

  • In this research, optimum design of the combined solar collector, geothermal heat pump and thermal seasonal storage system for heating and cooling a sample greenhouse is studied. In order to optimize the system from technical point of view some new control strategies and functions resulting from important TRNSYS output diagrams are presented. Temperatures of ground, rock bed storage, outlet ground heat exchanger fluid and entering fluid to the evaporator specify our strategies. Optimal heat storage is done with maximum efficiency and minimum loss. Mean seasonal heating and cooling COPs of 4.92 and 7.14 are achieved in series mode as there is no need to start the heat pump sometimes. Furthermore, optimal parallel operation of the storage and the heat pump is studied by applying the same control strategies. Although the aforementioned system has higher mean seasonal heating and cooling COPs (4.96 and 7.18 respectively) and lower initial cost, it requires higher amounts of auxiliary energy either. Soil temperature around ground heat exchanger will also increase up to $1.5^{\circ}C$ after 2 years of operation as a result of seasonal storage. At the end, the optimum combined system is chosen by trade-off between technical and economic issues.

  • Experimental study on the control of randomly disturbing system is conducted. External and internal disturbances are imposed to the system in combined manner. A vertical propeller system exposed horizontal weak turbulent air flow is chosen as an experimental model. The aim of the control system is to maintain the angular position of vertical propeller in parallel to air flow. Trajectory Tracking Stochastic Controller (TTSC) is designed to ensure system's stability while following system command. The Trajectory Tracking Stochastic Controller is composed of two controller, one is stochastic controller to suppress internal random noise and the other one is trajectory-tracking controller to follow the command having random noise.   • In case of developing a combined system by a number of distributed resources with storage device, a number of application suggests a huge capacity can derive operational flexibility both power supply issues or when unexpected situation imposed. However, it is important to determine a resonable energy capacity because the device have many controversial cost issues in current power system industry. An ESS application which focusing essentially required points can induce appropriate storage capacity that required in economic operation. In this paper, a curtailment supporting algorithm based on storage device is introduced, and applied in the capacity calculation method. The main algorithm pursues handling minor exceeding quantities which can cause mechanical load at blade; This paper tries to include it for configuring hybrid algorithm with pitch control. Several fluctuating conditions are utilized in simulation to reflect critical situation. The analyzing process focuses on the control feasibility with applied capacity and control method.

  • This paper presents the method for the fluctuation smoothing control by using relaxation time variable control of battery. When the output power of wind farm is changed suddenly, it is necessary to control the output power of wind farm. The smoothing relaxation time is changed within limits of battery output power. Using the hybrid energy storage system (HESS) combined with battery energy storage system and electric double layer capacitor, it is possible to control the output power of wind farm. The capacity of battery is determined by considering the case of the disconnecting wind farm from the grid. To verify the proposed method, simulations are carried out by using PSCAD/EMTDC with actual data of wind farm in the Jeju Island.

An Investigative Study for the Integration of SPC and EPC (SPC와 EPC 통합에 관한 조사 연구)

  • There are two approaches to process control. The one is engineering process control(EPC) which is one of the techniques very widely used in the process industry and based on control theory which aims at keeping the process on target using manipulating variable. The other is statistical process control(SPC) whose main purpose is to look for assignable causes(variability) in the process. To design an integrated or combined scheme of SPC and EPC is gaining recognition in the process experiences for hybrid industry. This paper aims to investigate recent study concerned on the integration of SPC and EPC. First, we consider the difference between SPC and EPC in simple terms and review various models of EPC for integration including evaluation of previous study. Finally, we suggest some prospective research area concerned on the integration of SPC and EPC.
