  • This study simulated the operation of a steam injected gas turbine combined heat and power (CHP) system. A full off-design analysis was carried out to examine the change in the turbine blade temperature caused by steam injection. The prediction of turbine blade temperature was performed for the operating modes suggested in the previous study where the limitation of compressor surge margin reduction was analyzed in the steam injected gas turbine. It was found that both the fully injected and partially injected operations suggested in the previous study would cause the blade temperature to exceed that of the pure CHP operation and the under-firing operation would provide too low blade temperature. An optimal operation was proposed where both the turbine inlet temperature and the injection amount were modulated to keep both the reference turbine blade temperature and the minimum compressor surge margin. The modulation was intended to maintain a stable compressor operation and turbine life. It was shown that the optimal operation would provide a larger power output than the under-firing operation and a higher efficiency than the original partially injected operation.

  • In this work a thermodynamic performance analysis is carried out for a combined cycle consisted of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and a LNG cycle. The combined system uses a low grade waste heat in the form of sensible energy and the LNG cold energy is used for power generation as well as for heat sink. The effects of the key parameters of th system such as turbine inlet pressure, condensation temperature and source temperature on the characteristics of system are throughly investigated. The simulation results show that the thermodynamic performance of the combined system can be significantly improved compared to the normal ORC which is not using the LNG cold energy.

  • This paper proposes a new approach to find the optimum ratios between sizes of the heat exchangers of the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) system with limited size to maximize the efficiency of the steam turbine (bottom) cycle of combined cycle power plants (CCPP), but without performing the bottom cycle analysis. This could be achieved by minimizing the unavailable exergy (the sum of the destroyed and the lost exergies) resulted from the heat transfer process of the HRSG system. The present approach is relatively simple and straightforward because the process of the trial-and-error method, typical in performing the bottom cycle analysis for the system optimization, could be avoided. To demonstrate the usefulness of the present method, a single-stage HRSG system was chosen and the optimum evaporation temperature was obtained corresponding to the condition of the maximum useful work. The results show that the optimum evaporation temperature based on the present exergy analysis appears similar to that based on the bottom cycle analysis. Also shown is the dependency of size (NTU) ratios between the heat exchangers on the inlet gas temperature, which is another important factor in determining the optimum condition once overall size of the heat recovery steam generator is given. The present approach turned out to be a useful tool for optimization of the singlestage HRSG systems and can easily be extended to multi-stage systems.

  • The thermal control device for the periodic working component combined solid-liquid phase change material (PCM) with heat pipes is designed and numerically studied. Due to high latent heat and retaining constant temperature during melting process the component peak temperature, not withstanding small radiator size, is reduced. The warm-up heater power consumption to keep the minimum allowed temperature is also cut down since the accumulated thermal energy is released through the solidification. The thermal buffer mass (TBM) made of Al can give the similar effect but the mass and power consumption of warm-up heater should increase compared to PCM. The amount of PCM can be optimized depending on the component heat dissipation and on/off duty time.

  • Numerical analysis on the three-dimensional laminar flows (Re=1000) and heat transfer in a rectangular channel with punched longitudinal vortex generator have been conducted to explore the heat transfer enhancement and the combined effect of the angle of attack ${\alpha}$ and the lovour angle ${\beta}$. Rectangular winglets have been used as vortex generators. Velocity and temperature fields and spanwise averaged Nu and friction factor were presented. Enhancement of heat transfer and flow loss penalty are evidenced. The results show performance characteristics allowing a reduction in heat transfer surface area of 62% for fixed heat duty and for fixed pumping power compared with that of channel flow without vortex generator. However, adding lovour angle to the vortex generator shows no positive effect on the heat transfer enhancement.

  • Generally, a coolant of the nuclear power plant is manufactured by electrolyzing the sea water near the plant for making the sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl), which is used for sterilizing the bacteria and the shellfishes sticking to the drains or the pumps at the outlet of the cooling system due to $8-10^{\circ}C$ warmer temperature than the inlet sea water. During manufacturing the sodium hypochlorite, the hydrogen with the high purity is also produced at the anode side of the electrolyzer. This paper describes a novel power plant system combined with the polymer electrolyte membrane(PEM) fuel cell, the wasted hydrogen from the sea water electrolyzer and the wasted heat of the nuclear power plant. The present status over the exhausted hydrogen at twenty nuclear power plants in Korea was investigated in this study, from which an available power generation is estimated. Furthermore, the economic feasibility of the PEM fuel cell power plant is also evaluated by a current regulations over the power production and exchange using a renewable energy shown in Korea Power Exchange(KRX).

  • As new small scale LFG (landfill gas) energy project model which can improve economic feasibility limited due to the economy of scale, LFG-Microturbine combined heat and power system with $CO_2$ fertilization into greenhouses was proposed and investigated including basic design process prior to the system installation at Gwang-ju metro sanitary landfill. The system features $CH_4$ enrichment for stable microturbine operation, reduction of compressor power consumption and low CO emission, and $CO_2$ supplement into greenhouse for enhancement plant growth. From many other researches, high $CO_2$ concentration was found to enhance $CO_2$ assimilation (also known as photosynthesis reaction) which converts $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ to sugar using light energy. For small scale landfills which produce LFG under $3\;m^3$/min, among currently available prime movers, microturbine is the most suitable power generation system and its low electric efficiency can be improved with heat recovery. Besides, since its exhaust gas contains very low level of harmful contaminants to plant growth such as NOx, CO and SOx, microturbine exhaust gas is a suitable and economically advantageous $CO_2$ source for $CO_2$ fertilization in greenhouse. The LFG-Microturbine combined heat and power generation system with $CO_2$ fertilization into greenhouse gas to enhance plant growth is technologically and economically feasible and improves economical feasibility compared to other small scale LFG energy project model.

  • During the last two decades the laser beam has progressed from a sophisticated laboratory apparatus to an adaptable and viable industrial tool. Especially, in its welding mode, the laser offers high travel speed, low distortion, and narrow fusion and heat-affected zones (HAZ). The principal obstacle to selection of a laser processing method in production is its relatively high equipment cost and the natural unwillingness of production supervision to try something new until it is thoroughly proven. The major objective of this work is focused on the combined features of gas tungsten arc and a low-power cold laser beam. Although high-power laser beams have been combined with the plasma from a gas tungsten arc (GTA) torch for use in welding as early as 1980, recent work at the Ohio State University has employed a low power laser beam to initiate, direct, and concentrate a gas tungsten arcs. In this work, the laser beam from a 7 watts carbon monoxide laser was combined with electrical discharges from a short-pulsed capacitive discharge GTA welding power supply. When the low power CO laser beam passes through a special composition shielding gas, the CO molecules in the gas absorbs the radiation, and ionizes through a process known as non-equilibrium, vibration-vibration pumping. The resulting laser-induced plasma (LIP) was positioned between various configurations of electrodes. The high-voltage impulse applied to the electrodes forced rapid electrical breakdown between the electrodes. Electrical discharges between tungsten electrodes and aluminum sheet specimens followed the ionized path provided by LIP. The result was well focused melted spots.

  • In order to reduce the compression power and to use the overall energy contained in LNG effectively, a combined cycle is devised and simulated. The combined cycle is composed of two cycles; one is an open cycle of liquid/solid carbon dioxide production cycle utilizing LNG cold energy in $CO_2$ condenser and the other is a closed cycle gas turbine which supplies power to the $CO_2$ cycle, utilizes LNG cold energy for lowering the compressor inlet temperature, and uses the heating value of LNG at the burner. The power consumed for the $CO_2$ cycle is investigated in terms of a production ratio of solid $CO_2$. The present study shows that much reduction in both $CO_2$ compression power (only $35\%$ of power used in conventional dry ice production cycle) and $CO_2$ condenser pressure could be achieved by utilizing LNG cold energy and that high cycle efficiency ($55.3\%$ at maximum power condition) in the gas turbine could be accomplished with the adoption of compressor inlet cooling and regenerator. Exergy analysis shows that irreversibility in the combined cycle increases linearly as a production ratio of solid $CO_2$ increases and most of the irreversibility occurs in the condenser and the heat exchanger for compressor inlet cooling. Hence, incoming LNG cold energy to the above components should be used more effectively.
