  • Rearing temperature influences food consumption, conversion and cocoon production in silkworm Bombyx mori L. Young age $({1^st}to{3^rd} instar)$ worms of Pure Mysore, a multivoltine were reared at 26, 28, 30 and $32^{\circ}C$ followed by combinations of these temperature levels during late age $({4^th} and {5^th} instar)$. Food consumption, conversion, larval duration and growth for each instar were recorded. The influence of combinations of these temperature levels during rearing on survival and cocoon production was assessed. Food consumption increased with the temperature up to $4^th$ instar and decreased during $5^th$ instar. Temperature beyond $28^{\circ}C$ during young age followed by higher temperature ($30^{\circ}C$ and above) has shown deleterious effect on cocoon production. The paper discusses the rearing performance in relation to food intake and conversion under the tested temperature levels.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the strength and technical feasibility of glulam from small diameter Pinus densiflora and Larix kaempferi. Small diameter logs are currently not used in structural laminated beam construction, but it is suggested that its properties may be feasible for this purpose. The glulam combinations were designed with high grade laminae located at outer laminations (face) and low grade laminae located at center laminations. Important problems of finger jointed glulam as a structural beam are the small modulus of rupture (MOR). One solution for this problem Mi to use veneer and solid wood as the face laminae. The MOE values were predicted for each beam from laminae. The results showed that actual beam MOE values exceeded slightly the predicted values. Based on the evaluation and analysis of Pinus and Larix glulam, the maximum load of Larix kaempferi glulam indicated large values. The bending properties of A and E types glulam were superior to others. It is suggested that this small diameter log can be a candidate for structural glulam construction, providing the proper combinations of face laminae.

  • This study confirmed the usefulness of short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) in the discrimination and classification of evergreen forest types. A forested area near Hisayama and Sasaguri in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, served as the study area. Warm-temperate forest vegetation dominates the study site vegetation. Coniferous plantation forest, natural broad-leaved forest, and bamboo forest were analyzed using LANDSAT5/TM and SPOT4/HRVIR remote sensing data. Samples were extracted for the three forest types, and reflectance factors were compared for each band. Kappa coefficients of various band combinations were also compared by classification accuracy. For the LANDSAT5/TM data observed in April, October, and November, Bands 5 and 7 showed significant differences between bamboo, broad-leaved, and coniferous forests. The same significant difference was not recognized in the visible or near-infrared regions. Classification accuracy, determined by supervised classification, indicated distinct improvements in band combinations with SWIR, as compared to those without SWIR. Similar results were found for both LANDSAT5/TM and SPOT4/HRVIR data. This study identified obvious advantages in using SWIR data in forest-type discrimination and classification.

  • Accurate forecasting of pan evaporation (PE) is very important for monitoring, survey, and management of water resources. The purpose of this study is to develop and apply Kohonen self-organizing feature maps neural networks model (KSOFM-NNM) to forecast the daily PE for the dry climate region in south western Iran. KSOFM-NNM for Ahwaz station was used to forecast daily PE on the basis of temperature-based, radiation-based, and sunshine duration-based input combinations. The measurements at Ahwaz station in south western Iran, for the period of January 2002 - December 2008, were used for training, cross-validation and testing data of KSOFM-NNM. The results obtained by TEM 1 produced the best results among other combinations for Ahwaz station. Based on the comparisons, it was found that KSOFM-NNM can be employed successfully for forecasting the daily PE from the limited climatic data in south western Iran.

  • The parametric study of Steel-Al alloy SPR joint process is based on the FE simulation described by Kim et al. [10], which was validated by comparing experimental and simulation results for two kinds of steel-Al alloy combinations according to the lower sheet thickness. To analyze the SPR joint process, the friction coefficient, the lower sheet thickness, and the rivet length were selected as the main parameters. Based on FE simulations, the effect of main parameters was investigated by measuring the interlock and the bottom thickness at the cross-sectional shape of the SPR joint. The results of simulation facilitate the design of SPR joint process in various metal combinations.

  • Antibacterial activities of magnolol (MGL) and honokiol (HKL) in combination with four representative antibiotics-amoxicillin (AMPC), oxytetracyclin (OTC), gentamicin (GM) and chloramphenicol (CAP)-were evaluated against four bacterial strains. When tested by disk-plate method, five out of eight combinations such as HKL-AMPC, HKL-CAP, MGL- AMPC, MGL-OTC, and MGL-CAP showed additive to synergistic interaction against gram- negative bacterium Salmonella typhimureum. Of these, MGL-AMPC combination turned out to be antagonistic against Sarcina lutea and Bacillus thurungiensis. Against these two grain-positive bacteria, only HKL-GM combination showed additivity to synergism. All the other combinations showed no interactions. Despite these results, however, no synergism was observed in checkerboard titration assay.

  • The simultaneous addition of Al and Cr to the surface of Ni-and Fe-base alloy provides enhanced resistance to oxidation and corrosion in high temperatures. However, because of the large differences in thermodynamic stabilities of the volatile halides of Al and Cr, the codeposition of Al and Cr by halideactivated pack cementation is only possible for very specific, limited combinations of conditions. In this study, the experiments on the combinations of various metallic source powders and activators were conducted in order to obtain codeposition layers of Al and Cr on Ni with adequate composition by pack cementation. When Cr-Al masteralloy was used as a source powder, it was not easy to control Al and Cr content sensitively in the coating layers. On the other hand, when pure Cr and Al powder was used, ${\beta}$-NiAl layer containing about 20wt % Cr was obtained.

  • The objective of the present study was to analyze genetic variation and characteristics in rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) using amplified fragment length polymorphism(AFLP) method as molecular genetic technique, to evaluate the usefulness of AFLP as genetic markers, and to compared the efficiency of agarose and polyacrylamide sequencing gels. The amplified products were performed by agarose and sequencing gel electrophoresis to detect AFLP band patterns, respectively. Using 9 primer combinations, total of 141 AFLP bands were produced, 108 bands(82.4%) of which were polymorphic in agarose gels. In sequencing gels, total of 288 bands were generated, and 220 bands (76.4%) were polymorphic. The level of bandsharing(BS) ranged from 0.18 to 0.32 for the 9 primer combinations tested, with a mean of 0.24. Consequently, AFLP markers of these rainbow trout could be used as genetic information such as species identification, genetic relationship or analysis of genome structure, and selection aids for genetic improvement of economically importment traits in fish species.

  • For the purpose of understanding the feature of earlier prescriptions before Jeonhan-era(前漢時期), we invastigated "Osibi-byeongbang Jeobyeong(五十二病方 疽病)" and come to the follwing conclusions. 1. Hwanggi and Baeglyeom were combined in many cases of prescriptions. And Warming and Heating herbs such as Gye(桂), Gang(薑), Cho(椒) are the main herbs in combination of the herbs and adjusting the portions. 2. Out of inspection of the Current prescriptions of Jeobyeong(疽病), we find that the remedies were very diverse at that time. There are the synthetic methods of expelling toxin from within the body method, elimination from within method, sweat-inducing method, replenish Eum and Heat-reducing method. 3. The principles of combinations of prescriotions in "Osibi-byeongbang Jeobyeong(五十二病方 疽病)"are simple and have obvious orientations in remedies.
