Based on a summary of the previous studies on columnar joints, this study presents research strategies and subjects to understand a formation of columnar joints, and its application in South Korea as follows; geometry of colonnade and entablature, formation mechanism and pattern change, surface morphology and internal structure, platy joint at the top and the bottom of columnar joints, crack patterns in drying starch-water slurries, using numerical models and computer graphics on joint formation, scale and geometry concerned with occurrence of volcanic rock, petrological and mineralogical study of the host rock. Additionally, more research is needed, such as deformation of column pattern during the hot state, secondary landform by alteration and weathering on the Earth's surface such as rock stream, tor and tafoni. This study will take an active role in research of columnar joint and the Cenozoic lava flow of South Korea. Results of this study will be useful to the activation of geotourism and geological field study.
TiN films were deposited onto high speed steel(SKH9) and silicon wafer by plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition(PACVD) using a TiCl4/N2/H2/Ar gas mixture. The effects of deposition temperature, R.F. power, and H2 concentration on the deposition of TiN were studied. The residual chlorine content and the microhardness of TiN films were also investigated. It was found that TiN films grew with a columnar structure of a strong (200) preferred orientation regardless of the substrate type and the deposition variables. The TiN films consisted of columnar-grains of about 50 to 100 nm in diameter. The columnar grains themselves contained much finer fibrous grains. As deposition temperature increased, the residual chlorine content decreased sharply. R. F. powder enhanced the deposition rate largely. Increasing of H2 concentration had little effect on the residual chlorine.

[ $MgB_2$ ] films grown by hybrid physical chemical vapor deposition under appropriate growth conditions commonly exhibit columnar grain structure. The grain boundaries between adjacent columnar grains have been reported to be good flux pinning centers. In this work, we measured the angular dependence of critical current density ($J_c$) and observed the enhanced flux pinning when an external magnetic field was aligned parallel to the columnar direction. This $J_c$ was almost comparable to the $J_c$ for intrinsic pinning case up to 1 T at low temperatures, indicating that grain boundary pinning is very effective. At high fields, however, $J_c$ decreased rapidly resulting from the fact that the density of flux pinning centers provided by grain boundaries was outnumbered by the flux density.

For a fire cause judgement this paper describes the heating characteristics of electric bare wire melted by AC current. The cower wires prepared for the experiment were 1.2[mm], 1.6[mm], and 2.0[mm] in diameter. Through the cross section analysis(CSA), it was confirmed that the dendrite structure grew at the angle of about 40[$^{\circ}$] or 60[$^{\circ}$] when the fusing current was applied to the wires. The larger the fusing current is, the more decreased the growth angle of the dendrite structure is. It was confirmed that the dendrite structure was arranged like the columnar structure.
The purpose of this study is to prepare a high strength fiberglass reinforced metal. Aluminum covering was carried out over carbon materials such as carbon fiber in order to increase their wettability to molten metals such as aluminum. A sputtering apparatus with a cylindrical target was fabricated to carry out the covering. Sputtering was caused by glow discharge between the target and the two anode plates attached to its top and bottom. As the substrate for preliminary test, a thin carbon wire was used instead of carbon fiber, and the wire was placed at the central axis of the target. Aluminium coating was formed on the whole surface of the substrate. The formation rate and structure of coating were varied by controlling the electrical potential of substrate. When the substrate was electrically isolated, coating with columnar structure was formed with a formation rate of $15{\mu}m/hr$. In case of grounded substrate, coating with amorphous structure was formed with a formation rate of $7{\mu}m/hr$.
Metal films (i.e., Ti, Al and SUH310S) were prepared in a magnetron sputtering apparatus, and their cross-sectional structures were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. The apparatus used consisted of a cylindrical metal target which was electrically grounded, and two anode rings attached to the top and to the bottom of the target. A wire was placed along the center-line of the cylindrical target to provide a substrate. When the electrical potential of the substrate was varied, the metal-film formation rate depended on both the discharge voltage and the electrical potential of the substrate. As we made the magnetic field stronger, the plasma which appeared near the target collected on the plasma wall surface and thereby decreased the bias current. The bias current on the conducting wire was different from that for cation collection. The bias current decreased because the collection of cations decreased when we increased the magnetic-coil current. When the substrate was electrically isolated, the films deposited showed a slightly coarse columnar structure with thin voids between adjacent columns. In contrast, in the case of the grounded substrate, the deposited film did not show any clear columns but instead, showed a densely-packed granular structure. No peeling region was observed between the film and substrate, indicating good adhesion.
Commercial semicontinuous cast ingots of aluminum alloys often exhibit large grains composed of parallel arrays of continuous lamellae. Each lamella consists of a central {111} coherent twin boundary and wavy solidification boundary. This microstructure is referred to as a twin columnar growth(TCG) structure. The factors influencing the formation of a TCG structure include a unidirectional thermal gradient and the critical range of the alloying element content. The higher the thermal gradient is, the shorter the twin plane spacings are. The composition profile for an untwinned dendrite shows maximums at the positions of the interdendritic channels and the minimum appears at the center of the dendrite. While for twinned dendrite, it has wavy apperance. This profile has two local minimums instead of one shown in the untwinned.
AlN thin films were deposited by using a two-facing-targets type sputtering system (TFTS), and their deposition characteristics, microstructure and texture were investigated. Total gas pressure was kept constant at 0.4 Pa and the partial pressures of nitrogen, $PN_2$ (($N_2$ pressure)/($Ar+N_2$ pressure)) varied from 0 to 0.4 Pa. The texture of the film cross-sections and surface morphology were observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The crystallographic orientation of the films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Deposition of AlN film depends on $N_2$ partial pressure. The best preferred oriented AlN thin films can be deposited at a nitrogen partial pressure of $PN_2$ = 0.52. As-deposited AlN films show preferred orientation and columnar structure, and the grAlN size of AlN films increases with increasing sputtering current.

This study presented the structure and characteristics of vinyl cords used for wiring electric equipment and appliances and analyzed the photographs of damaged flat-type vinyl cords (VFF, $1.25mm^2$) and the metallic cross-sectional structure of melted conductors. Normal VFFs were made by twisting several strands together and the surface of the conductor was red brown. In addition, from the analysis of the metallic structure of the conductor, it was found that its grains had been elongated. The surface of a VFF damaged by normal flame showed no sheen with carbonized insulation material fused on the conductor surface. In addition, from the analysis of the cross-sectional structure of the melted area, it was found that voids of a certain shape were formed on it but that the cord's own elongation structure could not be checked. The cross-sectional analysis of the melted conductor damaged by the external flame applied to a VFF to which electric current was being applied showed no elongation structure for each cord, and revealed that irregular voids and a columnar structure had grown. The surface of the VFF damaged by overcurrent was uniformly carbonized and the cross-sectional structure analysis of the melted conductor revealed that the dendritic structure had grown. The analysis of the characteristics of the VFF melted by short-circuit showed that even though some part of the surface was contaminated, it showed little sheen and that the area rebounded by melting was round in shape. In addition, the cross-sectional structure analysis using a metallurgical microscope showed the boundary surface and columnar structure and revealed an amorphous structure like normal copper at areas other than the melted conductor.
