  • Boron nitride is a new processing aid that is capable of eliminating gross melt fracture in several polymer processing operations. Its combinations with other processing aids i.e. fluoropolymers offer additional possibilities of obtaining enhanced processing aids that may take the processes to rates not realized before. A variety of different such combinations are discussed in this paper. The essential componenets are (1) boron nitride capable of eliminating gross melt fracture and (2) suitable lubricant capable of eliminating surface melt fracture such as stearates for the polyolefin processing and polyethylenes for the processing of fluoropolymers.

  • Translocations involving chromosome 21q22 are frequently observed in hematologic malignancies including acute myeloid leukemia (AML), most of which have been known to be involved in malignant transformation through transcriptional dysregulation of Runt-related transcription factor 1 (RUNX1) target genes. Nineteen RUNX1 translocational partner genes, at least, have been identified, but not Homeobox A (HOXA) genes so far. We report a novel translocation of RUNX1 into the HOXA gene cluster in a 57-year-old female AML patient who had been diagnosed with myelofibrosis 39 months ahead. G-banding showed 46,XX,t(7;21)(p15;q22). The involvement of RUNX1 and HOXA genes was confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization.

  • Ryff's(1989) psychological well-being measure is used to assess and sometimes compare Korean and American adults, however, there is no information regarding whether its dimensions are psychometrically invariant across, whether its items provide sufficient information for, and whether each item measures identical trait levels in, the two nations. Confirmatory factor analysis on response 1,696 Korean and 3,669 American adults, gave to the measure revealed lack of fit and absence of factorial invariance across the two nations. Item response theory revealed significant variance for items on each factor across two countries that most items yielded limited psychometric information. And that each item measure different trait levels, suggesting that in its present form, the measure might lead to misleading results for, and across the two nations.

  • In this paper, we propose combined relay selection and cooperative beamforming schemes for physical layer security. Generally, high operational complexity is required for cooperative beamforming withmultiple relays because of the required information exchange and synchronization among the relays. On the other hand, while it is desirable to reduce the number of relays participating in cooperative beamforming because of the associated complexity problem, doing so may degrade the coding gain of cooperative beamforming. Hence, we propose combined relay selection and cooperative beamforming schemes, where only two of the available relays are selected for beamforming and data transmission. The proposed schemes introduce a selection gain which partially compensates for the decrease in coding gain due to limiting the number of participating relays to two. Both the cases where full and only partial channel state information are available for relay selection and cooperative beamforming are considered. Analytical and simulation results for the proposed schemes show improved secrecy capacities compared to existing physical layer security schemes employing cooperative relays.

  • Long-tenn variation in krill (Euphausia superba) and salp (mainly Salpa thompsoni) stocks was compared to environmental changes in the Atlantic and Indian sectors of the Antarctic. Environmental conditions examined were air temperature, water temperature, salinity, and sea-ice extent from 1926 to 1938 and from 1982 to 2000. The long-term pattern of krill was opposite to that of salp: krill stock decreased while salp stock increased concurrently. Krill stock was about three-fold higher from 1926 to 1938 than from 1982 to 2000, but salp was about four -fold lower in 1926-1938 than in 1982-2000. A wanning trend was observed in the environmental data, and the long-term variation in krill and salp stocks was affected by this trend.

  • The 3' ends of most eukaryotic messenger RNAs must undergo a maturation step that includes an endonuc-leolytic cleavage followed by addition of a polyadenylate tail. While this reaction is catalyzed by the action of only two enzymes it is supported by an unexpectedly large number of proteins. This complexity reflects the necessity of coordinating this process with other nuclear events, and growing evidence indicates that even more factors than previously thought are necessary to connect 3' processing to additional cellular pathways. In this review we summarize the current understanding of the molecular machinery involved in this step of mRNA maturation, focusing on new core and auxiliary proteins that connect polyadenylation to splicing, DNA damage, transcription and cancer.

  • This case report describes a unique C-shaped mandibular second premolar with four canals and three apical foramina and its endodontic management with the aid of cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT). C-shaped root canal morphology with four canals was identified under a dental operating microscope. A CBCT scan was taken to evaluate the aberrant root canal anatomy and devise a better instrumentation strategy based on the anatomy. All canals were instrumented to have a 0.05 taper using 1.0 mm step-back filing with appropriate apical sizes determined from the CBCT scan images and filled using a warm vertical compaction technique. A C-shaped mandibular second premolar with multiple canals is an anatomically rare case for clinicians, yet its endodontic treatment may require a careful instrumentation strategy due to the difficulty in disinfecting the canals in the thin root area without compromising the root structure.

  • The first doctoral program for science education was opened on March 1984 at Seoul National University in Korea. As a faculty member of the University, this researcher investigated the status of doctoral program of foreign countries through interview with instractors and students by visitation of some institutes, participation of seminars, observation of tutoring, reading of theses and the related papers, in order to compare them and to design a new one for our purpose. The number of science education doctoral degree holders is estimated about 4000, among them 3000 doctoral degree holders are from USA since Columbia University Teachers College started in 1930s at first, and about 1000 doctors from other mainly European countries including Germany and England since 1970s. This study concentrated to the doctoral program for science education of Columbia University(USA), King's College London(UK), and Monash University (Australia),so that proposed a few aspects of development on doctoral program for science education in Korea.
