  • In this paper, we propose a new color interpolation method based on trilateral filter approach, which not only preserve the high-frequency components(image edge) while interpolating the missing raw data of color image(bayer data pattern), but also immune to the image noise components and better preserve the detail of the low-frequency components. The method is the trilateral filter approach applying a gradient to the low frequency components of the image signal in order to preserve the high-frequency components and the detail of the low-frequency components through the measure of the freedom of similarity among adjacent pixels. And also we perform Gaussian smoothing to the interpolated image data in order to robust to the noise. In this paper, we compare the conventional demosaicing algorithm and the proposed algorithm using 10 test images in terms of hue MAD, saturation MAD and CPSNR for the objective evaluation, and verify the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • A volumetric 3D display system based on a rotating two dimensional color LED array is set up. It has a cylinder display space ${\Phi}800{\times}640mm3$ which is composed of 256 slices of pictures in one 3D image with each slice $320{\times}256$ LED pixels. The volumetric image has 4 gray scales and 64 colors. The main structure and working principle of the system is described in detail.

  • In this paper, a segmentation algorithm for color images based on the scale-space filter and the Fuzzy c-means (FCM) techniques is proposed. The methodology uses a coarse-fine concept to reduce the computational burden required for the FCM. The coarse segmentation attempts to segment coarsely using a thresholding technique, while a fine segmentation assigns the unclassified pixels by a coarse segmentation to the closest class using the FCM. Attempts also have been made to compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with other algorithms such as Ohlander's, Rosenfeld's, and Bezdek's. Intensive computer simulations has been done and the results are discussed in the paper. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm produces the most accurate segmentation on the O-K-S color coordinate while requiring a reasonable amount of computational effort.

  • Digital halftoning is a technique to make an equivalent binary image from scanned photo or graphic images. Low pass filtering characteristic of human visual system can be applied to get the effect of spatial averaging of local area consisted of black and white pixels for gray image. The overlapping of black dot decreases brightness and black dot is very sensitive to human visual system in the bright region. In this paper, for gray-level expression, only bright gray region in the color image is considered for blue noise mask (BNM) approach. To solve this problem, BNM with CMY dot is used for the bright region instead of black dot. Dot-on-dot model with single mask causes the problem making much black dot overlap, color distortion. Therefore approach with three masks for C, M and Y each is proposed to decrease pixel overlap and color distortion.

  • This paper introduces a new algorithm that renders motion blur using triangular motion paths. A triangle occupies a set of pixels when moving from a position in the start of a frame to another position in the end of a frame. This is a motion path of a moving triangle. For a given pixel, we use a motion path of each moving triangle to find a range of time that this moving triangle is visible to the camera. Then, we sort visible time ranges in the depth-time dimensions and use bitwise operations to solve the occlusion problem. Thereafter, we compute an average color of each moving triangle based on its visible time range. Finally, we accumulate an average color of each moving triangle in the front-to-back order to produce the final pixel color. Thus, our algorithm performs shading after the visibility test and renders motion blur in real time.

  • In this work, we suggested the method which improves the efficiency of the face detection algorithm using Pulse-Coupled Neural Network. Face detection algorithm which uses the color information is independent on size, angle, and obstruction of a face. But the use of color information encounters some problems arising from skin-tone color in the background, intensity variation within faces, and presence of random noise, and so on. Depending on these conditions, we obtained the mean and variance of skin-tone colors by experiments. Then we introduce a preprocess that the pixel with a mean value of skin-tone colors has highest level value(255) and the other pixels in the skin-tone region have values between 0 and 255 according to a normal distribution with a variance. This preprocess leads to an easy decision of the linking parameters.

  • A realtime face tracking algorithm using motion analysis from image sequences and color information is proposed. Motion area from the realtime moving images is detected by calculating temporal derivatives first, candidate pixels which represent face region is extracted by the fusion filtering with multiple color models, and realtime face tracking is performed by discriminating face components which includes eyes and lips. We improve the stability of face tracking performance by using template matching with face region in an image sequence and the reference template of face components.

  • In this study, we design and implement an eye-gaze estimation system based on the extraction of eye contour and pupil region. In order to effectively extract the contour of the eye and region of pupil, the face candidate regions were extracted first. For the detection of face, YCbCr value range for normal Asian face color was defined by the pre-study of the Asian face images. The biggest skin color region was defined as a face candidate region and the eye regions were extracted by applying the contour and color feature analysis method to the upper 50% region of the face candidate region. The detected eye region was divided into three segments and the pupil pixels in each pupil segment were counted. The eye-gaze was determined into one of three directions, that is, left, center, and right, by the number of pupil pixels in three segments. In the experiments using 5,616 images of 20 test subjects, the eye-gaze was estimated with about 91 percent accuracy.

  • This paper is related to a 2D virtual color hairstyler using skinny smudge tool. The smudge tool is the popular graphic tool embedded in Adobe Photoshop. The smudge tool is used to smear paint on your canvas. The effect is much like finger painting. You can use the smudge tool by clicking on the smudge icon and clicking on the canvas and while holding the mouse button down, dragging in the direction you want to smudge. A disadvantage of previous smudge tool is to also smear pixels in the undesired region according to generating the target image as blending all pixels in a diameter of the master. In this paper to reduce the disadvantage, the skinny smudge tool based on the image segmentation for a master shape is proposed. The proposed skinny smudge tool has the advantage of applying the smudge effect to the desired regions regardless of the background as the master shape adhered closely to the contour shape is extracted by color image segmentation.

  • This paper presents an effective demosaicking algorithm for color filter array (CFA) images acquired from single-sensor devices based on directional interpolation and nonlocal properties of the image. We interpolate the G channel considering diagonal directions as well as horizontal and vertical directions, using a small number of pixels to reflect local properties of the image. Then, we overcome image degradations, such as zipper effects near edges and false colors, by applying nonlocal means (NLM) filtering to the interpolated pixels. R and B channels are reproduced by using directional interpolation with information of the reconstructed G channel and NLM filtering. Experimental results for various McMaster images with high saturation and color changes show that the proposed algorithm accomplishes high PSNR compared with conventional methods. Moreover, the proposed method demonstrates better subjective quality compared with existing methods in terms of reduction of quality degradation, like false colors, and preservation of the image structures, such as edges and textures.
