  • The effects of latex particle size, basis weight of base paper and coating color concentration on the printing quality of coated paper were investigated. Coating colors were prepared with five types of latexes having different particle sizes. Coated papers were produced with high solid coating colors and with low solid coating colors in a industrial coater, respectively. In high solid coating colors, rheology modifier was used and GCC content was high. It was concluded that, in order to control binder migration and hence print mottle, latex particle sizes shall be controlled as well as formation, sizing degree and roughness of basis paper.

  • The mottling in coated paper is one of the most difficult problems to solve in the area of offset printing. The prevention of mottling requires optimization of coating color formation, especially the minimum of binder migration. In this paper, we studied a mottling. Kaolin clay and CaCO3 as pigment, starch and latex as binder of coating color were used in this study. We have measured surface property of 24 coated samples through k value, mottle value and transferred ink. In the equation of Walker and Fesko, the value of k was the highest and that of mottle and the mount of transferred ink were the lowest in kaolin 60 part. And it is more easy to analyze the various surface of coated paper when sample was exposed on IR.

  • We performed a study to investigate the characteristics of color perception according to some factors and to suggest the initial setting value of color temperature in each mode of a PC and TV monitor. Investigated factors were monitor coating (coating vs. noncoating)and screen brightness(30fL vs. 35fL). Twenty-three subjects (male 12, female 11) participated in this experiment. The experiment was performed in eachmode of a PC and TV monitor. Average color temperatures were obtained in both PC- mode and TV- mode. In addition, effects of monitor coating and screen brightness were investigated.

  • This study was carried out to elucidate the potential in substitution of SB latex with eco-friendly starch based bio-binder as a coating binder. The part of SB latex in coating color of pre- and top layer was substituted with starch based bio-binder in order to evaluate the characteristics of coating color and coated paper, and printability. The viscosity and water retention of coating color were increased by substitution of SB latex with starch based bio-binder. Roughness of coated paper was increased by substitution with starch based bio-binder, although there was not significant changes in roughness when SB latex is used as a binder in pre-coating color. Brightness and whiteness of coated paper were not affected, but opacity and print mottle were improved by substitution with starch based bio-binder. The interesting result observed was that dry-pick did not affected significantly, and ink set-off was improved by starch based bio-binder. It is expected that starch based bio-binder can be commercialized if the systematic further research works are carried out.

  • A simple and versatile method of fabricating color patterns in two-dimension (2D) and three-dimension (3D) was developed using the selective-wettability approach. Red, green, and blue color elements are sequentially formed on a single substrate in a pattern-by-pattern and/or pattern-on-pattern fashion, through a simple coating process. Either 2D or 3D structures in an array format are produced by controlling the thickness of the hydrophobic layer (HL) coating a substrate within the framework of wetting transition. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the stacked geometry of two successive patterns can be easily tailored for various types of color arrays, with the pattern fidelity of a few tens of nanometers in terms of only a parameter of the HL thickness.

  • We designed 5 layer coating in using $SiO_2$and $ZrO_2$. We calculated reflectance with changing the thickness of 5th layer and visualized color of reflected light in using reflectance of RGB. by the result, when thickness is increase from 5 nm to 80 nm, red color of reflected light is decreased and increase from 80 nm to 150 nm, blue color of reflected light is increased. we maked use of Photoshop 5.0 to analyze colors.

  • Cow leather coated with polyurethane film that contains various organic photosensitizers was investigated to demonstrate the antimicrobial properties in the application of the material to protective clothing and home appliances. To prepare the antimicrobial coating on leather surfaces with high potency against microbes, photoactive agents, such as benzophenone (BP), 4,4'-bis(dimethylamino) benzophenone (MK), 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone (DHBP) and methylene blue (MB), were incorporated into polyurethane-based coating solutions. The photoactive antimicrobial agent treated leather samples were characterized by SEM, color appearance, color fastness against abrasion, and antimicrobial tests. The optical properties of organic photosensitizers indicated that active UV absorbance ranges were different: BP (around 250 nm), MK (around 360 nm), DHBP (around 305 nm) and MB (around 295 nm &570 nm-685 nm). The intensity of the UV absorbance curve at the UVA light wavelength for the antimicrobial test showed the highest value with MK; subsequently, this was followed by MB, DHBP and BP in decreasing order. The treated-leather samples demonstrated excellent antibacterial activity under UVA light. The antimicrobial effects for the Staphylococcus aureus were superior to Escherichia coli. Moreover, the polyurethane finishing showed an effective durability to abrasion. The overall results indicated that DHBP is the most suitable PU coating additive to provide antimicrobial properties to leather as well as color and surface appearance than MK, MB, and BP.

  • Ag-coated Cu particles were prepared by dropping method of coating agent and were evaluated by scanning electron microscope and color difference meter. The shape of Cu particles having obvious crystal plan and edge was changed spherically according to the increase of Ag coating amount. When the Ag coating amount was 50 wt% to Cu particles, the whiteness of Ag-coated Cu particles was almost similar to that of pure Ag particles. Adding $NH_4$OH in reductant solution could increase effectively the whiteness of the Ag-coated particles. The Ag-coated particles having the highest whiteness was obtained when the content of hydrazine in reductant solution was 0.48 M.

  • It is essential to use base papers having proper surface characteristics in coating operation for improving coated paper quality and coater runnability. To fulfill these purposes surface sizing of coating base stock with anionic oxidized starch is commonly practiced. It is suggested that use of cationic starch for surface sizing rather than conventional oxidized starch will improve coated paper quality since cationic starch penetrates less into paper structure because of its strong electrostatic interaction with anionically charged paper surface. Strong interaction of cationic surface sizing starch with anionic coating color is expected to promote rapid immobilization of the coating color and improve coating holdout and optical property. The immediate objective of this study was to examine the influence of surface sizing starches on the properties of coated papers. Structural characteristics of the coatings formed on the substrate surface sized with cationic and anionic starches were examined. To enhance the efficiency of cationic surface sizing starch on coated paper properties, strongly charged cationic polymers were added to the surface sizing starch and its effect on coated paper properties was evaluated. Results showed that opacity and light scattering coefficient of coated paper were higher when base paper surface sized with cationic starch was used. Addition of less than 1% of cationic poly-DADMAC to the cationic surface sizing starch improved the opacity of coated paper significantly.
