Dynamic Analysis of Shattering of Tongil Paddy (통일(統一)벼의 탈립(脱粒)에 관(關)한 역학적(力學的) 분석(分析))

  • This study was intended to analyze the dynamic force system which induced the shattering of paddy grains. A model to predict the shattering of paddy grains was developed, and physical quantities, such as mass distribution and rigidity of rice plant, needed for evaluating the minimum shattering forces were also measured. Under the assumption that rice plant right before harvesting is a vibratory system, the mathematical model of the vibratory system was developed and solved with the varied conditions of forcing functions. The results of the study were summarized as follows: 1. The shattering of grain occurred at the abscission layer of grain by the bending moments resulted from the impact force due to the collision of panicles of rice plant. 2. The vibratory model developed for milyang 23 rice variety was analyzed to give the natural frequencies of 7-9 Hz, which were closely related with the excitation frequencies of 4-10 Hz caused by various machine parts besides engine. Thus, avoiding the resonance should be taken into consideration in the design of the harvesting machinery. 3. It was analyzed to predict the lowest frequency that could develop the shattering when the excitation force was applied to the lower end of stem. The lowest frequency for the Milyang 23 rice variety ranged from 8.33 Hz to 11.66 Hz as the amplitude varied from 1 cm to 2.5 cm. 4. The degree of shattering depended upon the magnitude of the impact force and its application point. For Milyang 23 rice variety, the minimum impact force developing the shattering was $5g_f$ when it was applied at 1 cm above the lower end of stern and $1g_f$ when applied at 5 cm above the lower end of stem. 5. The minimum colliding velocity of the panicle, when it was on the ground that would just develop the shattering, was given as follows, $$V=\sqrt{\frac{K_t}{m_g}{\cdot}{{\phi}^2}}$$ where V : The colliding velocity of the panicle against ground to cause the shatteering of rice grain. (cm/sec) $K_t$ : The minimum spring constant for bending at the abscission layer of grain. (dyne-cm/rad) ${\phi}$ : The minimum shattering angle of grain (rad) $m_g$ : The maximum mass of grain. Development of Non-Redirective Crash Cushion for Bridge Piers Considering Occupant Safety (탑승자 안전도를 고려한 교각 방호시설물 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The traffic accident types are largely classified into vehicle to vehicle accident, vehicle-to-person accident and single-vehicle. Especially, the single-vehicle accident types are severe when the vehicle crashed into road facilities such as bridge, piers, utility poles. The severity of single-vehicle accidents are ten times higher than that of all other accidents types. It is needed to consider to reduce accident severity. This study was conducted to develop crash worthy safety design facility to ensure the vehicle occupant safety. The simulation and the crash tests were conducted for assessment of the safety performance to check the criteria of CC2(Crash Cushion 2) level. THIV(Theoretical Head Impact Velocity) and PHD(Post-impact Head Deceleration) were used to assess occupant impact severity for crashes. The non-redirection collision test conditions for 900 kg and 1,300 kg-head on crash tests, 900 kg-1/4 offset crash tests, 1,300 kg-head on crash test with $15^{\circ}$angle were conducted. The simulation and experiment test result showed that THIV values were below 44 km/h criterion, PHD values were below the 20G. The development non-redirective crash cushion is expected to be used for the fixed object such as bridge piers for assuring occupant safety.

An Experimental Study on the Detection Characteristic of Draft Ice by Thermography System (열화상 시스템에 의한 유빙의 탐지특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Draft ice in polar regions is formed due to sea level changes and various environmental factors cause damage due to collision with offshore plants and ships for resource development. Drift ice in polar regions is a potential source of accidents for offshore plants that perform long-term operations in one place, as well as on the ship. To prevent accidents with drift ice, offshore plants and ships in polar regions use satellite image information and detection radar to detect drift ice. However, the inability to use visible satellite images at night significantly lowers the detection probability by radar for small drift ice. In this study, we used a thermal imaging system which can be operated day and night for the detection of drift ice, and carried out an experimental study on the detection characteristics of drift ice. To examine the night operation of the thermal imaging system, the experimental condition was set and the thermal image was measured according to the measurement angle change. Under this condition, the correlation was analyzed by theoretical calculating the radiant energy of the drift ice and the sea water.

The investigation of ship maneuvering with hydrodynamic effects between ships in curved narrow channel

  • The hydrodynamic interaction between two large vessels can't be neglected when two large vessels are closed to each other in restricted waterways such as in a harbor or narrow channel. This paper is mainly concerned with the ship maneuvering motion based on the hydrodynamic interaction effects between two large vessels moving each other in curved narrow channel. In this research, the characteristic features of the hydrodynamic interaction forces between two large vessels are described and illustrated, and the effects of velocity ratio and the spacing between two vessels are summarized and discussed. Also, the Inchon outer harbor area through the PALMI island channel in Korea was selected, and the ship maneuvering simulation was carried out to propose an appropriate safe speed and distance between two ships, which is required to avoid sea accident in confined waters. From the inspection of this investigation, it indicates the following result. Under the condition of $SP_{12}{\leq}0:5L$, it may encounter a dangerous tendency of grounding or collision due to the combined effect of the interaction between ships and external forces. Also considering the interaction and wind effect as a parameter, an overtaken and overtaking vessel in narrow channel can navigate while keeping its own original course under the following conditions; the lateral separation between two ships is about kept at 0.6 times of ship length and 15 degrees of range in maximum rudder angle. On the other hand, two ships while overtaking in curved narrow channel such as Inchon outer harbor in Korea should be navigated under the following conditions; $SP_{12}$ is about kept at 1.0 times of ship length and the wind velocity should not be stronger than 10 m/s.

Effect of All-Red Clearance Interval on Intersection Right-Angle Crashes (전적색신호가 교차로 직각충돌사고에 미치는 영향)

  • An All-red clearance interval(AR) has been operating with amber signal in order to avoid collision between vehicles which cannot come out of the intersections, vehicles coming in from the opposite direction, and pedestrians(bicycles) on the crosswalk during the signal conversion time at the intersections. Foreign nations have been analyzing AR's influences of traffic accidents. On the other hand, the similar research has not been conducted in the country. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to analyze the safety at the intersections with respect to the installation of AR through the hypothesis test. A before-and-after analysis has been performed for 10 intersections where applied AR. From the 95% of significance level, the results of Non-parametric Test show that the installation of AR improves a safety at the intersections. The results indicates that AR discharges vehicles passing through the intersections and control entering vehicles at the intersections.

Development and Performance Test of Ka-Band Pulsed Doppler Radar System for Road Obstacle Warning (도로 장애물 경보를 위한 Ka-대역 펄스 도플러 레이다 시스템 개발 및 성능시험)

  • Abruptly occurred obstacles on highway threaten driving safety. Radar draws the attention to the collision avoidance system because it can be fully operational in all weather, and day and night condition. This paper presents the design, implementation and performance test results of pulsed Doppler radar system for detection and warning of road obstacles. The system is designed to consider highway environment and detection capability about various fixed and moving obstacles. The system consists of 4 subsystems, which include antenna unit, transmitter and receiver unit, radar signal & data processing unit, and controller & display unit. The core technologies include clutter map based change detection for fixed obstacles detection, Doppler estimation for velocity detection of moving targets, and azimuth angle estimation method using monopulse for lane estimation and tracking. The design performance of the developed radar system is verified through experiments using a fixed reference target and moving vehicles in test highway.

Rotational Antenna based Clutter Imaging Algorithm in Helicopter Landing Mode (헬리콥터에 장착된 회전 안테나를 이용한 착륙지형의 이미지 생성 기법)

  • Helicopter-related collision accidents with structures mostly occur at landing, especially in a limited visibility environment, which necessitates some secondary equipment like a radar that can generate stationary clutter image. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that makes an image of stationary ground clutter in two dimensional range and azimuth angle domain. We present a mathematical model for the received signals from each clutter patch in the iso range ring and analyze their clutter and Doppler characteristics, assuming that a helicopter-borne radar has a rotational antenna. We propose a filter structure, which suppresses side lobe signal components while extracting a main lobe signal component, and suggest a solution for a problem stemmed from the filtering process. Finally, by conducting a simulation we show the performance of the suggested imaging algorithm on a two dimensional virtual scenario of the topographic clutter.

  • The calculation of the optimal trajectory of the stepped top-down robot was made using a genetic algorithm and a computational torque controller. First, the total energy efficiency was minimized using the Red-Cold Generic Algorithm (RCGA) consisting of reproductive, cross, and mutation. The reproducibility condition related to the position assembly of the start and end of the stride and the joints, angles, and angular velocities are linear constraints. Next, the unequal constraint accompanies the condition for preventing the collision of the swing leg at the corner with the outer surface of the stairs, the condition of the knee joint for preventing kinematic peculiarity, and the condition of no moment in safety in the traveling direction. Finally, the angular trajectory of each joint is defined by fourth-order polynomial whose coefficient is to approximate chromosomes. This is to approximate walking. In this study, the energy efficiency of the optimal trajectory was analyzed by computer simulation through a biped robot with seven degrees of freedom composed of seven links.

Dosimetric evaluation of using in-house BoS Frame Fixation Tool for the Head and Neck Cancer Patient (두경부암 환자의 양성자 치료 시 사용하는 자체 제작한 BoS Frame 고정장치의 선량학적 유용성 평가)

  • Purpose : BoS(Base of Skull) Frame, the fixation tool which is used for the proton of brain cancer increases the lateral penumbra by increasing the airgap (the distance between patient and beam jet), due to the collision of the beam of the posterior oblique direction. Thus, we manufactured the fixation tool per se for improving the limits of BoS frame, and we'd like to evaluate the utility of the manufactured fixation tool throughout this study. Materials and Methods : We've selected the 3 patients of brain cancer who have received the proton therapy from our hospital, and also selected the 6 beam angles; for this, we've selected the beam angle of the posterior oblique direction. We' ve measured the planned BoS frame and the distance of Snout for each beam which are planned for the treatment of the patient using the BoS frame. After this, we've proceeded with the set-up that is above the location which was recommended by the manufacturer of the BoS frame, at the same beam angle of the same patient, by using our in-house Bos frame fixation tool. The set-up was above 21 cm toward the superior direction, compared to the situation when the BoS frame was only used with the basic couch. After that, we've stacked the snout to the BoS frame as much as possible, and measured the distance of snout. We've also measured the airgap, based on the gap of that snout distance; and we've proceeded the normalization based on each dose (100% of each dose), after that, we've conducted the comparative analysis of lateral penumbra. Moreover, we've established the treatment plan according to the changed airgap which has been transformed to the Raystation 5.0 proton therapy planning system, and we've conducted the comparative analysis of DVH(Dose Volume Histogram). Results : When comparing the result before using the in-house Bos frame fixation tool which was manufactured for each beam angle with the result after using the fixation tool, we could figure out that airgap than when not used in accordance with the use of the in-house Bos frame fixation tool was reduced by 5.4 cm ~ 15.4 cm, respectively angle. The reduced snout distance means the airgap. Lateral Penumbra could reduce left, right, 0.1 cm ~ 0.4 cm by an angle in accordance with decreasing the airgap while using each beam angle in-house Bos frame fixation tool. Due to the reduced lateral penumbra, Lt.eyeball, Lt.lens, Lt. hippocampus, Lt. cochlea, Rt. eyeball, Rt. lens, Rt. cochlea, Rt. hippocampus, stem that can be seen that the dose is decreased by 0 CGE ~ 4.4 CGE. Conclusion : It was possible to reduced the airgap by using our in-house Bos frame fixation tool for the proton therapy; as a result, it was possible to figure out that the lateral penumbra reduced. Moreover, it was also possible to check through the comparative analysis of the treatment plan that when we reduce the lateral penumbra, the reduction of the unnecessary irradiation for the normal tissues. Therefore, Using the posterior oblique the Brain cancer proton therapy should be preceded by decreasing the airgap, by using our in-house Bos frame fixation tool; also, the continuous efforts for reducing the airgap as much as possible for the proton therapy of other area will be necessary as well.

Secondary camera position optimization for observing the close space between objects (근접한 물체 사이의 공간 관찰을 위한 보조 카메라 위치 최적화)

  • We present a secondary camera optimization method that helps the user exploring 3D virtual environment to precisely observe possible collisions between objects. The first role of our secondary camera is to automatically detect the area with the greatest possible collision. The second role is to show the detected area from a new angle of view that the current main camera cannot show. However, as the shapes of target objects are complex, the shape of the empty space between objects is also complex and narrow. It means that the space for the secondary camera position is highly constrained and its optimization can be very difficult. To avoid this difficulty and increase the efficiency of the optimization, we first compute a bisector surface between two target objects. Then, we limit the domain of the secondary camera's position on the bisector surface in the optimization process. To verify the utility of our method, we built a demonstration program in which the user can explore in a 3D virtual world and interact with objects by using a hand motion recognition device and conducted a user study.
