The 40% of wall criterion, which is generally used for the plugging of steam generator tubes, may be applied only to a single crack. In the previous study, a total of 9 failure models were introduced to estimate the local failure of the ligament between cracks and the optimum coalescence model of multiple collinear cracks was determined among these models. It is, however, known that parallel axial cracks are more frequently detected during an in-service inspection than collinear axial cracks. The objective of this study is to determine the plastic collapse model which can be applied to the steam generator tube containing two parallel axial through-wall cracks. Nine previously proposed local failure models were selected as the candidates. Subsequently interaction effects between two adjacent cracks were evaluated to screen them. Plastic collapse tests for the plate with two parallel through-wall cracks and finite element analyses were performed for the determination of the optimum plastic collapse model. By comparing the test results with the prediction results obtained from the candidate models, a plastic zone contact model was selected as an optimum model.

It is commonly required that tubes with defects exceeding $40\%$ of wall thickness in depth should be plugged; however, this criterion is too conservative for some locations and for some types of defects. Many studies have been done with the aim of developing an alternative plugging criteria, and these studies have shown that steam generator tubes with a certain range of axial through-wall cracks could remain in service without any safety or reliability problems. However, these studies have been limited, thus far, to consideration of single cracked tubes, necessitating a study on multiple cracks, which are commonly found. A crack coalescence model applicable to steam generator tubes with two collinear axial through-wall cracks was proposed in the previous study. In this paper, the investigation is extended to the parallel axial cracks spaced in a circumferential direction, because parallel axial cracks are more frequently detected during in-service inspections than collinear axial cracks. Interaction effects between two parallel cracks are evaluated by performing elastic and elastic-plastic finite element analyses.
Fatigue life of welded joints is governed by the propagation of multiple collinear surface cracks distributed randomly along weld toe. These cracks propagate under the mechanisms of mutual interaction and coalescence of the adjacent two cracks. To estimate the fatigue life, its influences on the above two mechanisms should be taken into account, which appear through the stress intensity factors disturbed mutually. However, it is difficult to calculate the stress intensity factors of the multiple surface cracks located in vicinity of weld toe due to its geometrical complexity. They are calculated normally by using the Μk-factors, but such Mk-factors are very rare in literature. In this study, the Μ$textsc{k}$-factors were obtained from a parametric study on crack length and depth, for which a finite element method is used. A fatigue test for a cruciform welded Joint was conducted and the fatigue life of the tested specimen was estimated using the present method with the informations obtained from the test, such as the number, size, and locations of the cracks. The estimated and measured fatigue life showed a good agreement.
The objective of this paper is to develop a computational model for predicting the fatigue propagation of collinear multiple surface cracks under constant amplitude and variable amplitude loadings. After examining fatigue crack growth behavior for CT specimens and single surface crack specimens, empirical equations of(11) and(12) are proposed for the prediction of fatigue life in a multiple surface crack geometry. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified using a life prediction computer program. Several case studies were performed to check the accuracy of the proposed model and to verify the usefulness of the developed program. Good agreement is observed between the numerical results based on the proposed model and the published experimental data.
In this paper, the scattering of harmonic elastic anti-plane shear waves by two collinear cracks in functionally graded materials is investigated by means of nonlocal theory. The traditional concepts of the non-local theory are extended to solve the fracture problem of functionally graded materials. To overcome the mathematical difficulties, a one-dimensional non-local kernel is used instead of a two-dimensional one for the anti-plane dynamic problem to obtain the stress field near the crack tips. To make the analysis tractable, it is assumed that the shear modulus and the material density vary exponentially with coordinate vertical to the crack. By use of the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of a pair of triple integral equations, in which the unknown variable is the displacement on the crack surfaces. To solve the triple integral equations, the displacement on the crack surfaces is expanded in a series of Jacobi polynomials. Unlike the classical elasticity solutions, it is found that no stress singularities are present at crack tips.
Failure mechanisms of weldments under fatigue loads are interpreted that multiple collinear surface cracks initiating along weld toe propagate under the mutual interaction and coalescence of adjacent two cracks. To estimate fatigue crack propagation life for these weldments, the stress intensity factors of the multiple surface cracks have to be calculated which are influenced strongly by the geometrical complexity of weld toes and attachments. The Ak-factors derived by a parametric study can be introduced for the effective calculation of the stress intensity factors taking into account the geometrical complexity. The fatigue life was estimated by using the Ak-factors and the method considering the propagation mechanisms of the multiple surface cracks. The estimated values showed a good agreement with the measured fatigue life experimentally.
The $40\%$ of wall thickness criterion which has been used as a plugging rule is applicable only to a single cracked steam generator tubes. In the previous studies performed by authors, several failure prediction models were introduced to estimate the plastic collapse pressures of steam generator tubes containing collinear or parallel two adjacent axial through-wall cracks. The objective of this study is to examine the failure prediction models and propose optimum ones for non-aligned two axial through-wall cracks in steam generator tubes. In order to determine the optimum ones, a series of plastic collapse tests and finite element analyses were carried out for steam generator tubes with two machined non-aligned axial through-wall cracks. Thereby, either the plastic zone contact model or COD based model was selected as the optimum one according to axial distance between two clacks. Finally, the optimum failure prediction model was used to demonstrate the conservatism of flaw characterization rules for various multiple flaws according to ASME code.
Fatigue life of welded joints are governed by the propagation of multiple collinear surface cracks distributed randomly along weld bead. These cracks propagate in mutual interaction and coalescence of them. To estimate the fatigue life, the influences of above two mechanisms on the fatigue life should be taken into account. These two mechanisms appear through the stress intensity factors disturbed mutually. However, it is difficult to calculate the stress intensity factors of multiple surface cracks located in vicinity of weld toe. The stress intensity factors are calculated normally by using the Mk-factors, but such Mk-factors are very rare in literature. In this study, the Mk-factors were obtained from a parametric study on crack length and depth, in which a finite element method is used. A fatigue test for a cruciform welded joint was conducted. The fatigue life of the tested specimen was estimated through present method with the informations obtained from the test, e.g. the number, size and locations of the cracks. The estimated and measured fatigue life showed a good agreement.
In a nuclear power plant, steam generator tubes cover a major portion of the primary pressure-retaining boundary. Thus very conservative approaches have been taken in the light of steam generator tube integrity According to the present criteria, tubes wall-thinned in excess of 40% should be plugged whatever causes are. However, many analytical and experimental results have shown that no safety problems exist even with thickness reductions greater than 40%. The present criterion was developed about twenty years ago when wear and pitting were dominant causes for steam generator tube degradation. And it is based on tubes with single cracks regardless of the fact that the appearance of multiple cracks is more common in general. The objective of this study is to review the conservatism of the present plugging criteria of steam generator tubes and to propose a new coalescence model for two adjacent through-wall cracks existing in steam generator tubes. Using the existing failure models and experimental results, we reviewed the conservatism of the present plugging criteria. In order to verify the usefulness of the proposed new coalescence model, we performed finite element analysis and some parametric studies. Then, we developed a coalescence evaluation diagram.
