The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual conditions of herbal medicine products for the establishment of drug utilization review system. To accomplish of the purpose, we investigated medical treatment pay of insurance and consumption of herbal medicine products in pharmacy at jeollabuk-do, two oriental hospital etc. To gain valid and reliable the actual conditions of herbal medicine products, it needed close relationship with oriental hospital, society for manufacture of herbal medicines etc and further study classify herbal medicines by Korean Medicine.

The main symptoms of the Wallenberg's syndrome are ataxia of gait, clumsiness of ipsilateral limbs, nausea and vomiting, vertigo, visual disturbance such as difficulty in focusing blurred vision diplopia, numbness, dysphagia, hoarseness, hiccup, nystagmus, Horner's syndrome. The purpose of this paper is to report the patient with the Wallenberg's syndrome who was improved by oriental medical treatment. The vertigo of the Wallenberg's syndrome is classed as the pungwhadam(風火痰) and we prescribed Cheonghunhwadam-tang. The intensity and frequency of vertigo wewe dramayically improved.

We examined clinical and reseach data about abdominal palpation conducted in japanese oriental medicine from the early stages of its medical history to the latest research, so as to introduce it into korean oriental medicine. That is to say, we studied clinical significance and suitable oriental medicine prescription about following : sweat and moistness of abdominal skin ; temperature of abdominal skin ; palpation and visible peristaltic movement ; meteorism ; tonus of the whole rectus abdominis muscle ; local tonus of parts rectus abdominis muscle ; palpitation of abdominal aorta ; resistance tender on pressure in epigastric region, subcostal region, umbilical region, lower abdomen, para-umbilical region, cecal region, sigmoid region and inguinal region ; sound of fluctuating liquid in the epigastric region. The result was that abdominal palpation was an immediately applicable method of clinical diagnosis in oriental medicine, and is being proven by western medicine methodology today. Therefore we suggest that korean oriental medicine would advance greatly if abdominal palpation were applied.

Ji-San, the founder of HyungSang medicine, emphasized food intake and detoxification by stating, "Korean medicine begins with detoxification." Toxin accumulates in one's body unless the internal and external conditions stay in their harmony. The accumulation of toxin is also caused by western medication or one-sided diet, and detoxification should be considered in those cases. HwangRyunHaeDok-Tang reduces fire and heat, and the lesion is likely to locate in the upper body. BangPoongTongSung-San can be used for systemic disease. IkWoon-San also reduces fire and heat but mainly focuses on promoting urination. InSamPaeDok-San has an effect of curing the external symptoms of SangHan(傷寒), in addition to detoxification. SeoGakJiHwang-Tang, SoDok-Eum, and SeoGakSoDok-Eum can resolve the heat-toxin when it is located on the surface. SibJeonDaeBo-Tang enhances the detoxifying function of human body. GhamDu-Tang and JaGeum-Jung have a general effect on detoxification.

The purpose of this study is to examine the toxic effects caused by xanthine oxidase/hypoxanthine(XO/HX) and the effects of herbal extracts such as JHYJ and GJHYJ on the treatment of the toxic effects. For this purpose, experiments with the cultured hippocampal cells from new born mice were done. The results of these experiments were as follows. 1. XO/HX, a oxygen radical-generating system, decreased the survival rates of the cultured cells on XTT assay and INT assay, the amount of DNA syntheses, and the amount of neurofilaments, and increased the lipid peroxidation. 2. JHYJ and GJHYJ have the efficacy of increasing the survival rates of the cultured cells. 3. JHYJ and GJHYJ have the efficacy of increasing the amount of neurofilaments and of decreasing the lipid peroxidation. 4. JHYJ and GJHYJ have the efficacy of increasing the amount of DNA syntheses. From the above results, it is suggested that Jihwangyeumja and Gamijihwangyeumja have marked efficacy as a treatment for the damages caused by the XO/HX-mediated oxidative stress. And Jihwangyeumja and Gamijihwangyeumja are thought to have certain pharmacological effects. Further dinical study of this pharmacological effects of Jihwangyeumja and Gamijihwangyeumja should be complemented.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report clinical effect of oriental medical for a not improved ITP patient, who developed complication from DVT, after intravenous immunoglobulin treatment. Methods : The patient was treated using Saam acupuncture, herbal medication, moxibustion and physical treatment. And we measured of systemic symptoms and platelet counts. Results : After treatment, systemic symptoms and platelet counts were improved in case. Conclusions : Oriental medical treatment showed significant effect on ITP patient that not improved platelet counts after intravenous immunoglobulin treatment.

Objectives : Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc is common reason causing back pain. Lumbar stabilization exercise prevent back pain recurrence by strengthening lumbar muscles. Sling Exercise Therapy(SET) is a system for spinal muscle stabilization and strengthening using fixed string and mobile band. The purpose of this study is to investigate and measure the effectiveness of SET and oriental medicine for Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc. Methods : The subjects for this study are 40 patients suffering from Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc in our clinic. They were measured and compared by Visual Analogue Scale(VAS), 4 grades of recovery degree and sex, age, period of disease, disc herniation type, times of exercise. Results : In the above index, the score(VAS, 4 grades of recovery degree) improved after treatments. But they make no difference between sex, age, period of disease, disc herniation type and times of exercise. Conclusions : These results suggest that SET may be used for Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc for pain management and muscle strengthening as an essential treatment regardless of sex, age, period of disease and disc herniation type.

Objective : The objective of this study is to evaluate the treatment effect of Band training in Osteoporotic Compression Fracture. Methods : Band training, Herb medicine and Acupuncture were performed for 56days admission in a patient who had Osteoporotic Compression Fracture. Result : ROM of Lumbar, Milgram test and Dorsiflexion has improved. VAS and ODI score were also decreased.

Objective : This study was designed to evaluate the effects of oriental medicine therapy on a normal pressure hydrocephalus patient. Methods : The clinical data was analyzed on a patient with normal pressure hydrocephalus whose main symptoms were dementia, gait disturbance and urinary incontinence. The patient was admitted to the internal medicine department of Dong-shin University Oriental Hospital from December 7, 2002, and remaind until January 20, 2003. He was treated with herbal medicine(Yukmijiwhangtang), acupuncture and moxa therapy. Results : After treatment, improvement was seen in dementia, gait disturbance, and urinary incontinence. Conclusions : The study suggests that oriental medicine therapy is significantly effective on the treatment or normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Hantaviruses are found worldwide and are known to cause two serious and often fatal human disease: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome(HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome(HPS). The typical clinical prodrome consists of fever, chills, myalgia, headache, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Treatment usually involves maintenance of fluids, blood pressure, ventilation and electrolytes. We report a patient who had multisystem inflammatory symptom with Hantaan virus antibody positive accompanied by mild fever and myalgia. This case was diagnosed as HFRS. This patient was treated by Galgun hegi-tang. As a result of this treatment, symptoms were markedly improved.
