  • The data for the present paper was a part of a large research project conducted to assess preservice teachers' knowledge related to fractions and place value at a southwestern public university in 2007. The study utilized convenience sampling, consisting of 150 elementary preservice teachers who were enrolled in a mathematics methods course before their student teaching. The results demonstrated preservice teachers' knowledge of teaching comparison, addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions was insufficient even though these should be basic knowledge. Teacher preparation programs should emphasize profound knowledge for teaching fractions using representations.

  • Recent research has documented that there is a close relationship between problem posing and problem solving in arithmetic. However, most studies investigated the relationship between problem posing and problem solving only by means of standard problem situations. In order to overcome that shortcoming, a pilot study with Chinese fourth-graders was done to investigate this relationship using a non-standard, realistic problem situation. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between students' problem posing and solving abilities. Based on that pilot study, a more extensive and systematic ascertaining study was carried out to confirm the observed relationship between problem posing and problem solving among Chinese elementary school children. Results confirmed that there was indeed a close relationship between both skills.

  • Recently the needs for education on Statistics is growing bigger, but a mathematics-oriented education makes college students loose interest in Statistics. On the hypothesis that motivating interest is the key factor for learning, we need to develop an education tool for Statistics that makes learners to study independently but throughly. By using Excel Macro, we develop and introduce add-in program, called PETS, which supplies not only results but also process to get them.

  • The study aimed to compare and analyze Nuri curriculum and contents for mathematics in Korea and the Common Core State Standards(CCSS) and New Jersey Preschool Standards for mathematics in the United States. With the results as basis, this study intended to provide suggestions and directions for improving Nuri curriculum of mathematics for young children. For the goal of this study, educational goals, categories of contents, and specific contents were reviewed. First, results of this study indicated that Nuri curriculum for mathematics provides comprehensive educational goals that promote problem-solving ability in everyday contexts with composing mathematical knowledge. On the contrary, CCSS and Preschool Standards provide specific educational goals that focus on children's mathematical skills and concepts. Second, the contents of both countries' curriculum concentrate on 'counting and cardinality', 'measurement', and 'spatial and geometric sense.' There are 5 categories of CCSS, 4 categories of Preschool Standards based on CCSS and one category of Nuri curriculum for mathematics. Third, there are the differences between the two countries' curriculum in continuity from kindergarten to first grade and description method for curriculum.

  • This article examines the Korean classroom teachers' perceptions about the 7th national mathematics curriculum for elementary school. Elementary classroom teachers were surveyed using the researcher-made questionnaire (Teacher Perception about Mathematics Curriculum) and 143 teachers completed the questionnaire. The data collected was analyzed by a descriptive analysis. The results revealed that about 67% teachers considered the curriculum was well developed in scope and sequence. However, 43% teachers reported that the teacher's manual should provide clearer explanation instructional strategies to teach the math topics to children. 38(26%) teachers claimed the curriculum contains too much content to teach. 34(24%) of the teachers indicated some contents were developmentally too difficult for their students to understand. The most serious difficulties for the teachers in teaching mathematics was to accommodate individual student's different mathematics abilities, especially accelerated by private lessons at the after school programs.

  • We present an efficient and robust finite difference method for a two-asset jump diffusion model, which is a partial integro-differential equation (PIDE). To speed up a computational time, we compute a matrix so that we can calculate the non-local integral term fast by a simple matrix-vector operation. In addition, we use bilinear interpolation to solve integral term of PIDE. We can obtain more stable value by using the payoff-consistent extrapolation. We provide numerical experiments to demonstrate a performance of the proposed numerical method. The numerical results show the robustness and accuracy of the proposed method.

  • This study is to establish the items on class critiques based on the mathematical competencies according to the mathematics curriculum revised in 2015. Namely, this study deals with the items on how pre-service or in-service teachers understand and comment on mathematics instruction on their own instruction or peers' instruction. To accomplish this, first of all the draft items on instructional reviews was developed by researchers of this study on the basis of the previous study(Hwang, 2018). In order to revise and develop the draft items, the experimental study was executed. The experimental study was done by the subject of 11 groups who are undergraduate students in the educational college of C University. The subject was supposed to watch an in-service middle school mathematics teacher's excellent instruction(study) video and to comment the instruction video on the draft items on class critiques. While analyzing the comments of the subject, the revised items on the class critiques were to be develop. Based on this study, from now on, the final and ideal items on the class critiques would be establish to reflect and comment teachers' instruction.
