Objectives : This study was peformed to assess the association between the social support and blood pressure(BP) in a rural community. Methods : A cross-sectional survey, comprising a health examination including BP, height and weight and a questionnaire-based interview which investigated social support, demographic factors, smoking, drinking, and etc. was peformed between February 10th and March 5th, 1998. The survey included 318 persons who were over than 30-year-old in the rural community of Kwangju, Republic of Korea. We excluded persons who taking antihypertensive medications or who provided incomplete information; we subsequently analyzed the data from 284 persons. In order to test the hypothesis of an association between BP and social support controlling confounders such as age, educational level, working time, body mass index, smoking and drinking, the data was analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. Results : The subjects were composed of 109(38.4%) males and 175(61.6%) females with mean ages of 62.0 years and 61.1 years, respectively. The hypertension prevalence was 41.3% among males and 45.1% among females. In the correlation analysis, higher total social support scores correlated significantly with lower systolic BP in both males and females. The hypertension prevalence increased significantly with the decreasing of the social support in males. In multiple regression analysis, systolic and diastolic blood pressure showed a negative association with social support in both males and females, although this was not statistically significant. Conclusions : Larger and broader studies are required in the future in order to identify the association between the social support and BP.
This study was designed to investigate the relationship between body mass index and food habits of college students. For this purpose, 358 students of Kangweon University were asked to fill out the questionnaires for food habits and weight control. The results are summarized as follows ; The rate of underweight, normal and obese was 16.5, 65.1, 18.4%, respectively. Food habits score of obese females were lower than normal or underweight females. Male subjects did not show significantly different scores among the three groups. Female obese subjects have lower scores than the other groups on the eating time, seaweed intake, protein intake and vegetable intake. Male obese subjects have nutritious meals and more eating time than normal and underweight males. College students are the early stage of adult life and their food habits, food behaviors and life style will continue in later life. Therefore, college students need more nutritional knowledge, positive dietary attitudes and modified life styles to prevent and treat obesity.
In this study, we investigated the growth rate on the basis of the sex and the year among the subjects of the licensed dental technicians from the year 1970 to 2003 in Korea. In line with this investigation, this study aims to provide a basic material with regard to the state of dental technician workforce by sex and to suggest a need to reassignment of workforce by sex in accordance with the specific job description. The results of the study are as follows; First, among the licensed dental technicians from 1970 to 2003, males came to 11,589 and females, 5,976, which shows the number of males are 1.9 times higher than that of females. To put the mean sexual composite from 1970 to 2003, male was 82.9% and female 17.1%, indicating the number of males are 4.8 higher than that of females. Second, Of the mean increasing rate until the year 2003 in contrast to 1970, male was about 351 and female was about 181, which shows the number of males increased 1.94 times higher than the females. Comparing to the mean increasing rate of the last year, female came to 25.56% and male 10.73%, which reveals that the females were about 2.4 times higher than the males. In the case of the growth rate, females increased by 1,196,20 times and the males, 26,41. As a result the growth of females are about 45.3 times higher than the males. Third, in the case of the growth rate from 1980 to 2003, females came to 47.85 times and males 9.16, which shows the growth rate of the females was about 5.2 times higher than the males. In contrast to the year 1987, the growth rate until 2003 shows that the females came to 5,13 times and the males 2.70, which indicates the growth rate of females was about 1.9 times higher than males. Fourth, Compared to the year 1990, the growth rate until 2003 shows that females came to 3.40 times and males 2.03 indicating the growth rate of the females was about 1.7 times higher than males. In contrast to the year 2000, the growth rate till 2003 shows that females was 1,34 times and males 1.15 times increased. Fifth, the ratio of sex by the year among the licensed dental technicians is as follows; ratio of male to female in 1970 was 91.2 to 1. In 2003 the ratio came to 2.0 to 1. The number of growth by sex in 1970 came to 24.0 males to 1 female. But the figure was equalled in 2003.
We studied the sex different nicotine effect on evoked population spike amplitudes (ePSA) and connexin (Cx) expression in the hippocampus CA1 area of gerbils. Acute doses of nicotine bitartrate (0.5 mg/kg: NT-0.5) slightly reduced ePSA in males but markedly augmented that in females. Acute NT (5.0 mg/kg) markedly increased the ePSA in all gerbils. Unlike acute NT-0.5, repeated NT-0.5 injection (twice a day for 7 days) significantly increased the ePSA in males and slightly affected the NT-0.5 effect in females. The Cx36 and Cx43 expression levels as well as Cx expressing neuronal populations were significantly increased by repeated NT-0.5 in in both male and female gerbils, and particularly, Cx43 expression was somewhat prominent in females. These results demonstrated a sex difference with respect to the nicotine effect on hippocampal bisynaptic excitability, irrelevant to connexin expression.
Body antioxidant status is an important factor for the prevention of many chronic diseases in the elderly. This study was done to evaluate the nutritional status of antioxidant vitamins of the elderly by determining their intakes and plasma levels. It was also aimed to compare daily intakes and plasma levels of antioxidant vitamins by sex of age. Subjects were 225 elderly persons aged over 60 years old (63 males, 162 females) living in Ulsan area. Subjects were divided by groups according to age(< 65, 65-74, 75) and sex. Dietary Intakes were assessed by semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires(FFQ). Plasma Vitamin C level was measured by 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine method and plasma levels of vitamin E, A and ${\beta}$-carotene were measured by HFLC. The average intakes of vitamin C were 104.9g(150% of RDA) and 104.4g(149% of RDA) in the elder1y males and females, respectively. Vitamin C intake of the elderly was significantly decreased by aging but not different by sex. The average intakes of vitamin A were 678$\mu\textrm{g}$RE(96.9% of RDA) and 604$\mu\textrm{g}$:RE(86.2% of RDA) in elderly males and females, respectively. The average levels of Plasma vitamin C were 6.22mg/L and 11.45mg/L in the elderly males and females, respectively. Those levels are within normal range(6-20mg/L). However the percentage of the elderly males with deficiency(< 2mg/L) and marginal level(2-4mg/L) of vitamin C were 27.4% and 16.1%, respectively. Plasma retinaol levels were 0.39mg/L for the elderly males and 0.37mg/L for the elderly females, which were within normal range. But the percentage of subjects with marginal level were 28% ill both males and females. Plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol levels of the elderly were lower than normal range(5-12mg/L). Plasma levels of vitamin C, E and ${\beta}$-carotene, except retinol, were significantly higher in the elderly females compared to males and showed significant decrease by aging.

In order to study the dally metabolism of sodium chloride and of nitrogen, 24-hour urine samples were collected from 1,593 normal Korean females whose ages varied from 2 to 80 years old. The volume, the concentration of chloride and the osmolality of the urine, add the total nitrogen were determined, along with the resting pulse rate and the blood pressure. The daily urine volume was maintained at $1,000{\sim}1,300\;ml/m^2/day$ in all age groups while the chloride concentration and osmolality of the urine samples were approximately 200 mEq/liter and 600 milliosmoles, respectively, in most of age groups. Hence the daily urinary output of sodium chloride was estimated to be approximately $15g/m^2$/day in adult groups. On the other hand, the daily excretion of total nitrogen amouted to approximately $5{\sim}6g/m^2/day$. These findings indicated that the average Korean females live on low-protein and high-salt diets throughout their life. Despite a known correlation between the incidence of hypertension and the high salt intake, none of the subjects employed in this work showed any sign of hypertension.
This study was designed to present the preferred indoor temperature of college students in summer based on their body composition. A total of 19 subjects, 10 females and 9 males, participated in this study. They sat in a climatic chamber controlled at $27^{\circ}C$ wearing a short sleeved shirt and short trousers. The air temperature decreased by $0.5^{\circ}C$ every 10 minutes until it reached $24^{\circ}C$. Oxygen uptake, rectal temperature, and skin temperature, subjective sensation were measured and recorded. Females increased the rectal temperature and decreased mean skin temperature in an air conditioned environment, showing better physiological responses. But they felt more thermal discomfort than males. The preferred indoor temperature of college students in summer was $25.3^{\circ}C$, $25.7^{\circ}C$ for females and $24.97^{\circ}C$ for males.
The study sample consisted of 40 people who were complaining of current insomnia. The study groups were classified according to their age and gender, each containing 5 males and 5 females in the same age group. All the subjects were measured for heart rate (HR) and complicated degree. 1. In the 20's age group, the complicated degree of the female subjects is found to be much less than that of the males, suggesting that the pathology of insomnia would be more serious in the young females. 2. In the 30's age group, the complicated degree of both genders are decreased but there is no significant discrepancy between the reduced complicated degree. 3. In the 40's age group, the complicated degree of both genders are decreased but there is no significant discrepancy between the reduced complicated degree. 4. In the 50's age group, the complicated degree of both genders are decreased, however the females with postmenopausal conditions show much more reduction in the complicated degree, compared to the male group.
The main purpose of this research was to examine a causal model concerning the direct and the indirect effect of family-of-origin functioning on psychological well-being through self-differentiation. The gender differences in the levels of the variables and the correlations among the variables were also examined. Participants were 587 female and 268 male students enrolled in nine different universities. The causal model was tested through structural equation model by using AMOS 8.0 program. The result showed that the levels of self-differentiation and psychological well-being were higher for males than for females, and that the three variables were positively associated to each other for both males and females. The result also indicated that male students' perception of family-of-origin functioning directly influenced their psychological well-being as well as indirectly through self-differentiation, while females' family-of-origin functioning had only a direct effect on their well-being. Results were discussed in terms of the applicability of self-differentiation to Korean college students and of the importance of family-of-origin functioning to improve students' mental health.
