The purpose of this study is to study how college students cope with their stress and how the level of their self-differentiation affects degrees of stress and stress-coping strategies. The questionnaires were handed to 497 college students at Y university in Gyeongbuk Province and the data were analyzed in terms of Cronbach's ${\alpha}$-coefficient, frequency and percentage, t-test, and regression analysis by using the SPSS statistical package. The results of this study were as follows: 1. For stress level, degree of self-differentiation and stress coping strategies of the college students, the average scores were 3.56, 2.53 and 3.49, respectively in 5-point Likert Scale, indicating that the students possess the above-average score for the degree of self-differentiation and stress-coping strategies and the below-average score for stress levels. 2. From examination of difference verification of stress levels based on the degree of self-differentiation and effect of degree of self-differentiation on stress levels, it was found that the higher is the degree of self-differentiation the lower is the stress level. 3. From examination of difference verification of stress-coping strategies according to the degree of self-differentiation and effect of degree of self-differentiation levels on stress coping strategies, we found that the students of higher degree of self-differentiation exercise the more active stress coping strategies. These results show that the degree of students' self-differentiation is a significant variable that influences their stress levels and stress control methods. It is thought that students' self-differentiation functions to minimize their stress and to actively cope with their stressful situation and that a high degree of self-differentiation is a significant mediator variable that is beneficial to students' mental health. It follows from the above observations that while college students in this study seem to possess good degrees of self-differentiation and stress coping capabilities and low stress levels they need to seek for the ways to improve their degree of self-differentiation by seeing into themselves and relationships with others around them. Parents, schools and consultation agencies are required to take an active hand to educate and encourage them to cope with their stress positively.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the stress caused by having a senior in high school preparing for the college entrance examination, and coping methods of middle aged women in order to have a high quality of life. Method: The subjects of this study were 410 middle aged women. The data were collected by a structured questionnaire during September 5 to October 26, 2005. Result: The respondents' scores of stress were relatively low. The scores of stress perception related to 'studies record inactivity', 'a bad feeling because their sons and daughters are lazy', and worries about fatigue and health of their sons and daughters' were relatively high. The scores of the coping method related to 'affirmative thought and conduct', and 'sincerity it in the senior in high school student' were relatively high. In subjects with a higher degree(score$\geq$3) of stress caused by the senior student in high school the scores of coping methods related to 'projection', 'evasion', and 'perseverance' were relatively higher than the scores of coping methods of subjects with a lower degree (score<3) of stress. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, we should develop an integrated support program for middle-aged women. A place must be made where mothers will be able to discuss the education of their children such as on-line group community by mothers.
Purpose: This study was to evaluate the effects of a comprehensive life style modification program on glycemic control and stress response in type 2 diabetes. Method: The participants(n=34) with type 2 diabetes were divided into either a usual care(control) or treatment(experimental) group. The experimental group(n=21) received a program that was based on a comprehensive life style modification protocol at a weekly meeting for 16 weeks. They also participated in individually prescribed exercise and diet along with stress management and self monitoring. The participants were followed for 6 months, during which postprandial glucose, HbA$_{1C]$, and stress response inventory were measured. Result: The experimental group showed a significant lower postprandial glucose and stress response compared to those of the control group. However, there was no significant change in the HbA$_{1C]$ value in either group. Conclusions: These results suggest that a type 2 diabetes comprehensive lifestyle modification program may lead to clinical improvement in glycemic control and reduce the stress response.
In the present study, toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was investigated in the nematode, Caenohabditis elegans focusing on the upstream signaling pathway responsible for regulating oxidative stress, such as mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades. Formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was observed in AgNPs exposed C.elegans, suggesting oxidative stress as an important mechanism in the toxicity of AgNPs towards C. elegans. Expression of genes in MAPK signaling pathways increased by AgNPs exposure in less than 2-fold compared to the control in wildtype C.elegans, however, those were increased dramatically in sod-3 (gk235) mutant after 48 h exposure of AgNPs (i.e. 4-fold for jnk-1 and mpk-2; 6-fold for nsy-1, sek-1, and pmk-1, and 10-fold for jkk-1). These results on the expression of oxidative stress response genes suggest that sod-3 gene expression appears to be dependent on p38 MAPK activation. The high expressions of the pmk-1 gene 48 h exposure to AgNPs in the sod-3 (gk235) mutant can also be interpreted as compensatory mechanisms in the absence of important stress response genes. Overall results suggest that MAPK-based integrated stress signaling network seems to be involved in defense to AgNPs exposure in C.elegans.
The purpose of this study was to analyze group differences of Commitment to career choice and Career stress coping strategy by the Career decision and Career preparation behavior for College Students. Through the results of this study we wanted to look for discriminatory implications for the counseling intervention. The data of 720 college students were collected for the study. The distinction of four types was revealed by the results from Crosstabs and One-way ANOVA. The frequency of upper grades indicated ideal type. But the immature type was fourth grade. There were significant differences in accordance with the two-dimensional typology of Commitment to career choice and Career stress coping strategy by One-way ANOVA. Discussion focused on effective intervention strategies in career counseling based on group differences by the Career decision and Career Preparation Behavior.
The objective of this study is to propose a finite element based design of the dental implant replacing unction and shape of natural teeth. For this, geometric actors were varied to investigate stress distribution of the alveolar bone around dental implant. In this study, the results were obtained based on the theory of linear elastic, with geometrically axisymmetric assumption. Geometric actors determining implant shape are ranged as 0.2mm-0.6mm, 0.04mm-0.1mm, 0.46mm-0.84mm or height of thread, radius of curvature of thread, and pitch, respectively. The stresses in the alveolar bone caused by biting force playa major role in determining implant stability. Especially, the stress concentration in the cortical bone causes bone resorption and finally makes the implant unstable. Therefore, the stress distributions were investigated on the side of the alveolar bone focusing on the area of cortical bone. The maximum von Mises stress was found to increase up to 6% as the height of thread increases, while its value was to decrease to 19% when the radius of curvature increase within the assigned ranges. For the variation of pitch, the larger size of pitch results in greater maximum von Mises stress when the length of the implant under consideration is fixed. The existence of the neck below the shoulder did not affect the stress distribution in the region of alveolar bone. However, the stresses on the side of the implant near the neck were found to be different by 20% approximately. Therefore, the neck can provide the stability of the implant against continuing biting movement. As a conclusion, the finite element based study shows a potential in designing the dental implant systematically.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of moxibustion on the stress urinary incontinence for middle-aged women. The study was performed with the nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design from April 14 thru June 16, 2003. Methods: The subjects are 60 middle-aged women with stress urinary incontinence which are composed of 30 in the experimental group and another 30 in the control group. The moxibustion procedure was applied to the experimental group in a week, and then the level of stress urinary incontinence was measured by using the revised Hendrickson's scale. Results: The results of this study are as follows: 1. Average period of stress urinary incontinence is 4.12 years, and the level of stress urinary incontinence is predominant in the mild state(63.3%), and the frequency of stress urinary incontinence is mostly 2-6 times per week(70%). 2. Hypothesis: Stress urinary incontinence will decrease for the experimental group as compared with for the control group: accepted(t=-5.113, p=0.000). Conclusion: Based on the results described above, it is considered that the moxibustion might be very effective oriental nursing intervention for improving the stress urinary incontinence for the middle-aged women.
The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between female college students' stress level and premenstrual syndrome so that it can provide baseline data on how to cope with the syndrome. The study subjects are 250 female college students in Gyungbook area. This study chose 199 appropriate subjects and collected data. As per general menstrual phases, this study investigated the age when one had her first period, regularity and duration of period, and amount of bleeding. It used a measurement tool to measure stress level and premenstrual syndrome. Most of the subjects experienced their first period before the age of 13. The menstrual period was irregular with the duration of less than 7 days. 123 subjects had normal amount of bleeding. 121 subjects were experiencing high level of stress over 2.4. The correlation between the level of stress and premenstrual syndrome factors showed significant static correlation for each factor. Especially, the correlation between digestive system and response of autonomic nervous system was .996 and negative emotion and behavioral change was .635, and negative emotion and pain was .614 which were relatively high. The regression analysis of factors of premenstrual syndrome depending on the subjects' stress level indicated that response of autonomic nervous system had the biggest effect in the low stress group while behavioral change, negative emotion, pain, decreased concentration, water congestion, response of autonomic nervous system, and skin change had the biggest effect in the high stress group with statistical significance. Based on the result, it can be said that higher premenstrual stress is closely related to the premenstrual syndrome one experiences for some female college students.
The grid structures with welded hollow spherical joint (WHSJ) have gained increasing popularity for use in industrial buildings with suspended cranes, and usually welded with steel tube (ST). The fatigue performance of steel tube-welded hollow spherical joint (ST-WHSJ) is however not yet well characterized, and there is little research on fatigue life prediction methods of ST-WHSJ. In this study, based on previous fatigue tests, three series of specimen fatigue data with different design parameters and stress ratios were compared, and two fatigue failure modes were revealed: failure at the weld toe of the ST and the WHSJ respectively. Then, S-N curves of nominal stress were uniformed. Furthermore, a finite element model (FEM) was validated by static test, and was introduced to assess fatigue behavior with the hot spot stress method (HSSM) and the effective notch stress method (ENSM). Both methods could provide conservative predictions, and these two methods had similar results. However, ENSM, especially when using von Mises stress, had a better fit for the series with a non- positive stress ratio. After including the welding residual stress and mean stress, analyses with the local stress method (LSM) and the critical distance method (CDM, including point method and line method) were carried out. It could be seen that the point method of CDM led to more accurate predictions than LSM, and was recommended for series with positive stress ratios.
Purpose: The purpose of this studγ is to understand relations among perceived stress, stress coping method, self-rare behavior and Hemoglobin $A_1c$ of elderly diabetic mellitus patients. Method: Participants were 128 patients who were under medical treatment in outpatient department at C university hospital. The collected data were analyzed using technical statistics, frequency, percentage, T-test, ANOVA and person's correlation coefficient by SPSS 12.0. Result: There were positive correlation between self-care behavior and coping method based on emotions under the lower category of stress coping method. Hemoglobin $A_1c$ of patients had a negative correlation with physical exorcise of self coping method under the lower category. Perceived stress had also a negative correlation with emotions as coping method in the lower category and medication of self-care behavior. Conclusion: It was noted that elderly diabetic mellitus patients didn't much use a coping method based mainly problems and another method based emotions in case of perceived stress. The findings of this study will be useful for developing an nursing intervention program focused on elderly diabetic mellitus patients.
