  • 345kV Incheon Thermal Power Plant Transmission Line Collapse Analysis and Countermeasures. The Typhoon Galmaegi which had been formed in July 15, 2008 diminished into a tropical cyclone and cooled the air above the West Sea. The cooled air colliding with the warm inland air caused a strong whirlwind at some places in the west seaside; the whirlwind battered the 345kV Incheon Thermal Power Plant Transmission Line to be collapsed. The resistance against wind pressure, one of the key elements in transmission line engineering, is designed to endure the pressure corresponding to the maximum instantaneous wind speed. Before the above accident happened, no transmission line has ever been collapsed by a whirlwind. So this paper is aimed to analyze causes that collapsed 345kV Incheon Thermal Power Plant transmission line and to introduce countermeasures.

  • This paper concerns the development and implementation of an orthotropic, stress resultant elasto-plastic finite element model for the collapse load analysis of reinforced concrete plates. The model implements yield line plasticity theory for reinforced concrete. The behaviour of the yield functions are studied, and modifications introduced to ensure a robust finite element model of cases involving bending and twisting stress resultants ($M_x$, $M_y$, $M_{xy}$). Onset of plasticity is always governed by the general yield-line-model (YLM), but in some cases a switch to the stress resultant form of the von Mises function is used to ensure the proper evolution of plastic strains. Case studies are presented, involving isotropic and orthotropic plates, to assess the behaviour of the yield line approach. The YLM function is shown to perform extremely well, in predicting both the collapse loads and failure mechanisms.

  • In recent years, much attention has been paid to the voltage collapse phenomena. There has been reported many cases about the voltage collapse in many countries. These voltage collapse phenomena are known as the event that can occur due to reactive power deficits. This paper proposes an efficient method that can pursue the reactive power loss changes and gives the simple voltage collapse proximity indicator(VCPI) based on the reactive power loss sensitivities using optimal techniques. By comparing reactive power loss sensitivity with active power loss sensitivity, it is also proved that VCPI based on reactive power loss sensitivities is more effective. The developed VCPI is derived from the Jacobian matrix of Load Flow and the computational burden is very low and on-line implementation is possible. The proposed method is applied to a IEEE-14 bus test system and reliable and promising results are obtained.

  • Archival long-slit spectra, covering the wavelength range 4050~5150$\AA$, have been used to investigate the radial behavior of absorption line features (G4300, Fe4383, Ca4455, Fe44531, Fe4668, and H$\beta$) of an eliptical galaxy NGC 5322. The heliocentric recession velocity of NGC 5322 has been derived as 1888$\pm$51kms-1. Metallic absorption lines of NGC 5322 show significant radial gradients through the major axis. The minor axis shows much smaller radial metal line gradients than the major axis. The minor axis shows much smaller radial metal line gradients than the major axis. The mean slopes of Fe line gradients to the major and minor axes of NGC 5322 were estimated as -0.433$\pm$0.064 and -0.242$\pm$0.096, respectively. Significant radial gradients of H$\beta$ absorption of NGC 5322 are also detected both on the major and minor axes. It is shown that the radial metallicity gradients in NGC 5322 are smaller than expected in a simple dissipative collapse model. Rather, dissipationless collapse, such as hierarchical merhing, could have contributed during the initial stage of the galaxy formation.

  • Optimization of mesh discretization has been proposed to improve the accuracy of limit analysis solution of collapse load by using the Rigid Body Spring Model(R. B. S. M) under the plane strain condition. Moreover, the fracture behaviour of materials was investigated by employing the fracture mechanism of a spring connecting the triangular rigid body element. It has been clarified that the collapse load and the geometry of slip boundary for optimized mesh discretization were close to those of the slip line solution. Further, the wedge-shaped fracture of a cylinder under a lateral load and the central fracture of a strip in the drawing process were well simulated.

  • A bubble-powered microactuator is designed conceptually. And the actuation mechanism due to bubble growth and collapse is studied numerically and analytically. In this analysis, it is estimated that the time lag for bubble formation on micro line heater, the duration of the bubble growth and collapse and the pressure change in actuator due to the bubble evolution. Based on these calculations, the actuator control scheme is visualized. This actuator may be applicable to the system which needs to pump liquid correctly and regularly.

  • The simulation of reactive power compensation in 5-bus and 25-bus system was conducted using transmission-line loss system identification method. Sensitivities of maximum load-power with respect to reactive power compensation was identified by the simulation. With sufficient reactive power compensation at the first voltage-collapsing load-bus, the first voltage collapse could be prevented until the next voltage-collapsing load-bus lost its voltage stability. And the total compensated reactive power at the first voltage-collapsing bus means reactive power margin of voltage collapse or distance to voltage collapse. This quantity can be useful for determining the size of compensating devices or the site to compensate.

  • Observed spectra of supernovae allow the empirical classification of supernovae into two basic categories, Type I with little or no evidence of hydrogen, and Type II with obvious evidence for hydrogen. The broad class of Type I can be subdivided depending on whether helium or silicon and other intermediate mass elements is observed. Understanding the physical processes that underlie these classifications---the progenitor evolution. the explosion mechanism, and end products---requires calculation of radiative transfer and model spectra. While most Type II occur in evolved massive stars that undergo core collapse. some may span the dividing line between degenerate and non-degenerate carbon burning and involve both core collapse and thermonuclear explosion. Type Ia are still most plausibly explained as thermonuclear explosions in carbon/oxygen white dwarfs in binary systems. Type Ib reveal helium atmospheres and are probably the result of core collapse in the helium core of a massive star that has lost its hydrogen envelope to a binary companion or to a wind. Type Ic supernovae are probably related to Type Ib but have also lost their helium envelope to reveal a mantle rich in oxygen.

  • In this study, the seepage behavior and the stability of the extension embankment were estimated for three cases the permeability coefficient of an extension part and the rising velocity due to the rainfall of flood period. In parallel flow condition, the unstability of the slope due to embankment erosion was examined by analyzing the variation of seepage line by the seepage modeling tests and FEM analysis, and the stability of the embankment slope accompanied by the sudden rise of the water level after the flood. The seepage behavior of extension embankment indicates that the larger permeability of the extension part the longer initial seepage distance, and the exit point from embankment slope is gradually increased, and then shows unstable seepage behavior that occurs a partial collapse as safety factor decreases with time. It is because of the increment of exit points due to variation of seepage line and rising velocities of water level. Also, the collapse aspect of embankment slope shows that the increment rising velocities of water level causes the increment collapse height and depth.
