Volcanic eruptions alone may lead to serious natural disasters, but the associated release of water from a caldera lake may be equally damaging. There is both historical and geological evidence of the past eruptions of Mt. Baekdusan, and the volcano, which has not erupted for over 100 years, has recently shown signs of reawakening. Action is required if we are to limit the social, political, cultural, and economic damage of any future eruption. This study aims to identify the area that would be inundated following a volcanic flood from the Cheon-Ji caldera lake that lies within Mt. Baekdusan. A scenario-based numerical analysis was performed to generate a flood hydrograph, and the parameters required were selected following a consideration of historical records from other volcanoes. The amount of water at the outer rim as a function of time was used as an upper boundary condition for the downstream routing process for a period of 10 days. Data from the USGS were used to generate a DEM with a resolution of 100 m, and remotely sensed satellite data from the moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) were used to show land cover and use. The simulation was generated using the software FLO-2D and was superposed on the remotely sensed map. The results show that the inundation area would cover about 80% of the urban area near Erdaobaihezhen assuming a 10 m/hr collapse rate, and 98% of the area would be flooded assuming a 100 m/hr collapse rate.
This study simulated flood inundation each frequency rainfall using GIS spatial information and FLUMEN model for part of Muju-Namdae Stream. To create geomorphology for the analysis of flood inundation, Triangle Irregular Network(TIN) was constructed using GIS spatial interpolation method based on digital topographic map and river profile data, unique data source to represent real topography of the river areas. And also flood inundation was operated according to the levee collapse to consider extremely flood damage scenarios. As the analysis of result, the inundation area in the left levee collapse showed more high as 3.13, 3.69, and 4.17 times comparing with one of right levee for 50, 100, and 200 year frequency rainfall and showed 1.00, 2.15, and 3.34 times comparing with one of right levee in the inundation depth with over 1.0 meter, which can cause casualties. As the analysis of inundation area of the inundation depth with over 1.0 meter, which can cause casualties in left levee collapse, it increased more high as 263% and 473% when 50 year frequency change into 100 and 200 year frequency. Also As the analysis of inundation area of the inundation depth with over 1.0 meter in right levee collapse, it increased high as 123% and 142% when 50 year frequency change into 100 and 200 year frequency. Especially, the inundation area of the inundation depth with 3.0~3.5m showed more high as 263% and 489% when 50 year frequency change into 100 and 200 year frequency. It is expected that flood inundation map of this paper could be important decision making data to establish land use planning and water treatment measures.
Elbows with various shapes of local wall thinning were numerically analyzed by finite element method to get load-displacement curves and the maximum loads. Results were compared with the experimental data obtained by another study. Elastic-plastic analysis were carried out under the combined loading conditions of internal pressure and in-plane bending loads. Two types of bending loads were considered such as elbow opening mode and elbow closing mode. Also, two different wall thinning geometries were modeled. Wall thinning area located extrados or intrados of elbow inner surface was considered. Longitudinal and circumferential lengths of the thinning area and the thinned thickness were varied for analysis. The results showed that the maximum load of the wall-thinned elbow decreased with increasing of the circumferential thinning length and the thinned thickness in both of extrados and intrados thinning locations in both loading types. The maximum load obtained by the analysis were in good agreement with the experimentally measured maximum load with the same wall thinning type and dimensions. This supports accuracy of the analysis results obtained in this study.

Voltage instability is a phenomenon that could occur in power systems due to stressed conditions. The result would be an occurrence of voltage collapse leading to total blackout of the system. Therefore, voltage collapse prediction is an important part of power system planning and operation, and can help ensure that voltage collapse due to voltage instability is avoided. Line outages in power systems may also cause voltage collapse, thereby implying the contingency in the system. Contingency problems caused by line outages have been identified as one of the main causes of voltage instability in power systems. This paper presents a new technique for contingency ranking based on voltage stability conditions in power systems. A new line stability index was formulated and used to identify the critical line outages and sensitive lines in the system. Line outage contingency ranking was performed on several loading conditions in order to identify the effect of an increase in loading to critical line outages. Correlation studies on the results obtained from contingency ranking and voltage stability analysis were also conducted, and it was found that line outages in weak lines would cause voltage instability conditions in a system. Subsequently, using the results from the contingency ranking, weak areas in the system can be identified. The proposed contingency ranking technique was tested on the IEEE reliability test system.

We developed a 'multi-point vibration acceleration method' for accurately predicting the cavitation intensity in pumps. Pressure wave generated by cavitation bubble collapse propagates and causes pump vibration. We measured vibration accelerations at several points on a casing, suction and discharge pipes of centrifugal and mixed-flow pumps. The measured vibration accelerations scattered because the pressure wave damped differently between the bubble collapse location and each sensor. In a conventional method, experimental constants are proposed without evaluating pressure propagation paths, then, the scattered vibration accelerations cause the inaccurate cavitation intensity. In our method, we formulated damping rate, transmittance of the pressure wave, and energy conversion from the pressure wave to the vibration along assumed pressure propagation paths. In the formulation, we theoretically defined a 'pressure propagation coefficient,' which is a correlation coefficient between the vibration acceleration and the bubble collapse pressure. With the pressure propagation coefficient, we can predict the cavitation intensity without experimental constants as proposed in a conventional method. The prediction accuracy of cavitation intensity is improved based on a statistical analysis of the multi-point vibration accelerations. The predicted cavitation intensity was verified with the plastic deformation rate of an aluminum sheet in the cavitation erosion area of the impeller blade. The cavitation intensities were proportional to the measured plastic deformation rates for three kinds of pumps. This suggests that our method is effective for estimating the cavitation intensity in pumps. We can make a cavitation intensity map by conducting this method and varying the flow rate and the net positive suction head (NPSH). The map is useful for avoiding the operating conditions having high risk of cavitation erosion.

Recently, highway tunnel construction has rapidly been increased due to the limited ground usage and geographical characteristic in Korea, i.e. Korea consists of 70% mountains. In this paper, it was analyzed tunnel collapse patterns in the weathered rockmass. Recent tunnel collapse pattern is quite different from that of past ten years. Tunnels in past years have been collapsed at shallow valley area because of shear strength decrease after heavy rain. Tunnels, which have been constructed recently, were collapsed at even the deeper ground position after primary support. Also in the case that proper reinforcement was not applied, it caused excessive crack at shotcrete and local collapse near tunnel face. In this paper, it was analysed the cause of the recent tunnel collapses and proper reinforcement for the collapsed tunnels.
Hydraulic falling head and slug tests were carried out in an alluvium aquifer using a borehole stability device. The hydraulic testing had proved difficult in alluvial formations of sands and gravels due to borehole collapse and unstable borehole walls within the test section. This study aims to improve the hydraulic test results by using a borehole stability device. The device can minimize the collapse of borehole walls, and the use of a filter with a constant opening ratio improves the calculations per unit area of the test section. Permeability obtained from the falling head test without a borehole stability device was 8.82 × 10−5m/sec. When the borehole stability device was installed in the same test section the measured permeability increased to 4.00 × 10−4m/sec, which is 4.5 times that obtained without the borehole device. The relatively low permeability obtained using the conventional test method is attributed to the presence of a fine-grained slime generated during drilling and a reduction of the test area in the test interval due to a gradual collapse of the borehole walls. This study considers how the use of a borehole stability device to prevent borehole collapse can influence the results of hydraulic tests in alluvial formations. It is expected that the results can be used as a basis for improving the reliability and applicability of hydraulic tests performed in alluvial aquifers.
The purpose of this study is to present emergency rehabilitation, cause and the countermeasure of reinforcement about reinforced retaining wall and the slope collapse of the phyllite ground. The study area is broken easily because this area has rock mass discontinuity such as stratification, foliation, joint and fold. And this area consists of the ground where it happens easily to the failure of structure like reinforced retaining wall because of the phyllite ground sensitive to weathering. Counterweight fill in front of reinforced retaining wall was performed as emergency rehabilitation about displacement of reinforced retaining wall and the failure at the rear of slope on phyllite ground. After that, additional displacement didn't occur. Boring and geophysical exploration were launched to present emergency rehabilitation and develop the long-term method of reinforcement. This could grasp anticipated range of the failure section and identify internal and external factors of the cause of the slope collapse. Several methods of reinforcement were suggested by conducting the numerical analysis. When conducting design and construction of major structures at the ground which has complex discontinuities, the precise site investigation should be conducted. During construction, immediate action for over-displacement should be taken by performing the periodic measurement.
The Yemi Breccia has been reported as a separate formation near Yemi area, Kangwondo. This formation overlies the Maggot Formation of the Joseon Supergroup unconformably, and is overlain by the Goseong Shale conformably. Based on the field observation and textural examination of the Yemi Breccia, the breccia beds are interpreted as soluton-collapse breccia beds, which were formed by the dissolution of the pre-existing evaporites. The evaporites were precipitated during the deposition of the upper part of the Maggot Formation. Therefore, the Yemi Breccia should not be regarded as a separate formation, instead, it should be considered to be a upper part of the Maggot Formation. This implies that the overlying Goseong Shale and Goseong Limestone can be correlated with the Jigunsan and Duwibong Formtions, respectively.
This study strives to highlight the importance of considering the vertical ground motions (VGM) in the seismic evaluation of RC buildings. To this aim, IDA (Incremental Dynamic Analysis) is conducted on three code-based designed high-rise RC frame-core wall buildings using a suite of earthquake records comprising of significant VGMs. To unravel the significance of the VGM inclusion on the performance of the buildings, IDAs are conducted in two states (with and without the vertical component), and subsequently based on each analysis, fragility curves are developed. Non-simulated collapse criteria are used to determine the collapse state drift ratio and the area under the velocity spectrum (SIm) is taken into account as the intensity measure. The outcome of this study delineates that the inclusion of VGM leads to the increase in the collapse vulnerability of the structures as well as to the change in the pattern of inter-story drifts and failure mode of the buildings. The results suggested that it would be more conservative if the VGM is included in the seismic assessment and the fragility analysis of RC buildings.
