A Study on Effectiveness of Mathematics Teachers' Collaborative Learning: Focused on an Analysis of Discourses

  • Collaborative learning has been highlighted as an effective method of teachers' professional development in various studies. To disclose teachers' discourse threads in the process of collaborative learning for developing their knowledge, this paper adopted two methods including "content analysis" and "time-sequential analysis" of learning analytics. Such analyses were implemented for mining teachers' updated knowledge and the discourse threads in the discussion during collaborative learning. The materials for analysis involved two aspects: one was from the video-taped lesson observation reports written by teachers before and after discussing, and the other was from their discourses during the discussion process. The results proved that teachers' knowledge for teaching the centroid of a triangle was updated in the collaborative learning period, and also revealed the discourse threads of teachers' collaboration contained "requesting information or opinions", "building on ideas", and "providing evidence or reasoning", with the emphasis on "challenging ideas or re-focusing talk"

Social Network Anaylsis of Collaborative Activity in Rural Community - Case study of Hong-Dong area in Chungman Province, South Korea - (농촌 공동체 협업활동의 사회연결망분석 - 충남 홍성군 홍동 지역을 중심으로 -)

  • Rural development policy has changed from hardware based development to community revitalization. The purpose of this study is to analyze social network of collaborative activity among rural organizations as fundamental of community. The material used in this study is a record of collaborative activites in the community newsletter of Hong-Dong area. 161 of collaborative activities (links) and 75 of organizations (nodes) are investigated in network. 6 collaborative activity type ('Education', 'Socializing', 'Meeting', 'Culture', 'Event' and 'Labor') is classified. 'Socializing' is inclusive of approximately half of whole network (50.67%). Closeness centraization, degree centralization and betweenness centralization are measured on top in 'Education', 'Meeting' and 'Event' type. Scatter plot analysis using degree and betweenness centrality index, 'Maeul Revitalization Center', 'Balmak Library', 'Woori-Maeul Medical Co-op', 'Support Center for Female Farmers', 'Hongdong Middle School' and 'Mundang Sustainable Agriculture Education Center' are resulted as the core organization in network. Geographical distribution of collaborative activity is not only concentated in Hong-Dong Myeon but also networked with adjacent administrative district. This study finds its purpose in the detailed analysis of network characteristics of collaborative activity within Hong-Dong area which is representative developed rural community in Korea.

Comparison of Recommendation Using Social Network Analysis with Collaborative Filtering in Social Network Sites (SNS에서 사회연결망 기반 추천과 협업필터링 기반 추천의 비교)

  • As social network services has become one of the most successful web-based business, recommendation in social network sites that assist people to choose various products and services is also widely adopted. Collaborative Filtering is one of the most widely adopted recommendation approaches, but recommendation technique that use explicit or implicit social network information from social networks has become proposed in recent research works. In this paper, we reviewed and compared research works about recommendation using social network analysis and collaborative filtering in social network sites. As the results of the analysis, we suggested the trends and implications for future research of recommendation in SNSs. It is expected that graph-based analysis on the semantic social network and systematic comparative analysis on the performances of social filtering and collaborative filtering are required.

Partial Least Squares Based Gene Expression Analysis in EBV-Positive and EBV-Negative Posttransplant Lymphoproliferative Disorders

  • Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a common complication of therapeutic immunosuppression after organ transplantation. Gene expression profile facilitates the identification of biological difference between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positive and negative PTLDs. Previous studies mainly implemented variance/regression analysis without considering unaccounted array specific factors. The aim of this study is to investigate the gene expression difference between EBV positive and negative PTLDs through partial least squares (PLS) based analysis. With a microarray data set from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, we performed PLS based analysis. We acquired 1188 differentially expressed genes. Pathway and Gene Ontology enrichment analysis identified significantly over-representation of dysregulated genes in immune response and cancer related biological processes. Network analysis identified three hub genes with degrees higher than 15, including CREBBP, ATXN1, and PML. Proteins encoded by CREBBP and PML have been reported to be interact with EBV before. Our findings shed light on expression distinction of EBV positive and negative PTLDs with the hope to offer theoretical support for future therapeutic study.

  • Collaborative filtering, among other recommender systems, has been known as the most successful recommendation technique. However, it requires the user-item rating data, which may not be easily available. As an alternative, some collaborative filtering algorithms have been developed recently by utilizing the market basket data in the form of the binary user-item matrix. Viewing the recommendation scheme as a two-class classification problem, we proposed a new collaborative filtering scheme using a regularized discriminant analysis applied to the binary user-item data. The proposed discriminant model was built in terms of the major principal components and was used for predicting the probability of purchasing a particular item by an active user. The proposed scheme was illustrated with two modified real data sets and its performance was compared with the existing user-based approach in terms of the recommendation precision.

  • The objective of this article is to create a model of integrated management from the framework modeling of a digital collaborative network supported by knowledge engineering to make heritage site in the Brazil more effective. It is an exploratory and qualitative research with thematic analysis as technique of data analysis from the collaborative network, digital platform, world heritage, and tourism themes. The snowballing approach was chosen, and the mapping and classification of relevant studies was developed with the use of the spreadsheet tool and the Mendeley® software. The results show that the collaborative network model oriented towards strategic objectives should be supported by a digital platform that provides a technological environment that adds functionalities and digital platform services with the integration of knowledge engineering techniques and tools, enabling the discovery and sharing of knowledge in the collaborative network.

An Analysis of Collaborative Visualization Processing of Text Information for Developing e-Learning Contents

  • The purpose of this study was to explore procedures and modalities on collaborative visualization processing of text information for developing e-Learning contents. In order to investigate, two research questions were explored: 1) what are procedures on collaborative visualization processing of text information, 2) what kinds of patterns and modalities can be found in each procedure of collaborative visualization of text information. This research method was employed a qualitative research approaches by means of grounded theory. As a result of this research, collaborative visualization processing of text information were emerged six steps: identifying text, analyzing text, exploring visual clues, creating visuals, discussing visuals, elaborating visuals, and creating visuals. Collaborative visualization processing of text information came out the characteristic of systemic and systematic system like spiral sequencing. Also, another result of this study, modalities in collaborative visualization processing of text information was divided two dimensions: individual processing by internal representation, social processing by external representation. This case study suggested that collaborative visualization strategy has full possibility of providing ideal methods for sharing cognitive system or thinking system as using human visual intelligence.

Movie Recommendation Algorithm Using Social Network Analysis to Alleviate Cold-Start Problem

  • With the rapid increase of information on the World Wide Web, finding useful information on the internet has become a major problem. The recommendation system helps users make decisions in complex data areas where the amount of data available is large. There are many methods that have been proposed in the recommender system. Collaborative filtering is a popular method widely used in the recommendation system. However, collaborative filtering methods still have some problems, namely cold-start problem. In this paper, we propose a movie recommendation system by using social network analysis and collaborative filtering to solve this problem associated with collaborative filtering methods. We applied personal propensity of users such as age, gender, and occupation to make relationship matrix between users, and the relationship matrix is applied to cluster user by using community detection based on edge betweenness centrality. Then the recommended system will suggest movies which were previously interested by users in the group to new users. We show shown that the proposed method is a very efficient method using mean absolute error.

Analysis of Collaborative Utterances among Elementary Students in Problem-Solving Process (문제 해결 과정에서 나타나는 초등학생들의 협력적 발화 특성 분석)

  • This is a case study that defined collaborative utterances and analyzed how they appear in the problem-solving process when 5th-grade students solved problems in groups. As a result, collaborative utterances consist of an interchange type and a deliver type and the interchange type is comprised of two process: the verification process and the modification process. Also, in groups where interchange type collaborative utterances were generated actively and students could reach an agreement easily, students applied the teacher's help to their problem-solving process right after it was provided and could solve problems even though they had some mathematics errors. In interchange-type collaborative utterances, each student's participation varies with their individual achievement. In deliver-type collaborative utterances, students who solved problems by themselves participated dominantly. The conclusions of this paper are as follows. First, interchange-type collaborative utterances fostered students' active participation and accelerated students' arguments. Second, interchange-type collaborative utterances positively influenced the problem-solving process and it is necessary to provide problems that consider students' achievement in each group. Third, groups should be comprised of students whose individual achievements are similar because students' participation in collaborative utterances varies with their achievement.
