The purpose of the study described in this paper was to experimentally investigate branch squared T joints with cold formed hollow structural sections under the in plane moment in a Vierendeel Truss. The branch in the T joints was welded to the upper flange of the chord. The main experimental parameters were the ratio of the width to the thickness of the chord ($2{\gamma}$), with ${16.7{\leq}2{\gamma}{\leq}33.3}$, and the width ratio of the branch to the chord ($\beta$), with ${0.40{\leq}{\beta}{\leq}0.71}$. Nine specimens were tested and manufactured in joints under the in plane bending moment. Based on the results of the test, the in plane moment strength of the branch squared T joints was determined according to the bending deformation of the chord flange yielding, regardless of the ratio of the width to the thickness of the chord and the ratio of the width of the branch to the width of the chord. Also, the in plane moment strength of the branch squared T joints in the hollow structural sections can be defined as 1.5 times the moment load at M1%B the strength of the joints that governed the serviceability in the control group. Finally, the experimental results with the branch squared T joints show that the in lane moment strength of the joint increased as $2{\gamma}$ decreased and $\beta$ increased.
A study on quantitative phytoplankton samples, hydrographic conditions (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen), and nutrients has been performed in the southern waters of the Korean East Sea in early spring. Phytoplankton community showed close correlation with hydrographic conditions. This study area could be divided into three phytohydrographic regions; 1) East Korean Warm Water Region (a branch of Tsushima Current), 2) North Korean Cold Water Region, and 3) offshore water region not affected by other two water regions. Vertical distribution of phytoplankton is dependent upon stability of water column and nutrient concentration. Nutrient concentration shows characteristic distribution according to water masses. N/P ratio of ca. 3 in surface layer indicates that nitrogen is the major limiting nutrient in this area. N/P removal ratio was 12.54 ($r^2$ = 0.96), consistent with the Redified ratio. Primary nitrite maxima at the nitracline depths are thought to be formed by phytoplankton exudation. Secondary nitrite maximum was observed in coastal area with dissolved oxygen content of >5.2 ml/l much higher than <0.25 ml/l in other areas. The mechanism of secondary maximum is different from that of other regions, and whether it may be due to in situ degradation of organic matter by bacterial activity is still open to discuss.

The purse-seine fishery is very important in the coastal fishery of Korea and the main fish species of this fishery are mackerals and also the main fishing grounds are Tushima Current region, To investigate the relationship between the fishing grounds of mackerels and oceanographic condition, the distribution of mean catches of mackerals of each size (1974~1982) was firstly examined and the oceanographic observation carried out in eastern and western area of Cheju island, being main fishing grounds, in July and October, 1983. The results are as follows: The main fishing grounds of mackerals were also in the Tsushima Current region in southern sea of Korea and the season of the good catches are in May and September to October. The small and medium size of mackerals of which the body lengths are 27 cm to 31 cm, about 2-3 ages, occupied about 90% but the smaller size mackerals of which body lenth is 22 cm (1 age)were about 40 to 70% in February to March. The locations of seasonal fishing grounds could founded by 15$^{\circ}C$ isotherm which indicates the Tsushima Current Water. With trace of this isotherm it was founded that the fishing grounds near the Korean Strait than that of south of Cheju island moves faster northward and/or later southward. The main fishing grounds eastward and westward of Cheju island were the front areas formed between the Tsushima Current Water and the southern coastal water of Korea or Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water. And also the distributions of transparences, water colors and the penetration of sun light of this fishing grounds were similar to that of the temperature, the salinity or volume of planktonic organism.
The temporal and spatial distribution of the coastal cold waters which was formed due to winter colling in the South Sea of Korea was analyzed by IR images from satellite and in situ data from shipboard observations. The coastal waters are known to be consisted of the Yellow Sea Coastal Waters(YSCW) and the South Korean Coastal Waters(SKCW). The former is driven around the Chuja-do and drifted into the Cheju Strait by residual currents, while the latter expands toward offsea by southward wind forcing. The expansion patterns of the SKCW were observed as sinking expansion or drifting expansion such that both were strongly dependent on the surface heat flux conditions. Under the condition of positive heat flux(warmer sea surface) or when the sea surface heat is lost to the atmosphere, the surface water started sinking and eventually expanded toward the open sea causing the cooling of the water column. For the negative heat flux the surface water was just drifted horizontally and expanded seaward and in this case only the surface layer of water was cooled.

We manufactured rice-whole soybean curd by a microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) with a mixture of hydrolyzed rice and micronized whole soybean powder (MWSP) and analyzed its rheological properties, including texture, viscoelasticity, protein cross-linking, and surface structure. A 40% rice suspension digested with a Termamyl enzyme at $85^{\circ}C$ for 20 min showed a 9.0% reducing sugar and a consistency of $1.27\;Pa{\cdot}s^n$, resulting in a great reduction in consistency. A MWSP suspension with 22% solid content was transformed into a typical tofu texture. MWSP curd fortified with 7.5% rice showed enhanced texture properties, with a hardness of 639.6 dyne/$cm^2$, and a springiness of 0.96. In a MWSP suspension (18~22% w/v) treated with 5% MTGase, viscoelasticity increased dependently with MWSP concentration, and a 22% MWSP indicated a G' value of 5.1 Pa and a G'' value of 9.0 Pa. Furthermore, soybean proteins present in the 22% MWSP curd largely disappeared or formed polymers with a high molecular weight by MTGase reaction within 30 min. MWSP (22%) fortified with 7.5% rice showed similar polymerization patterns on SDS-PAGE. The surface structure of the rice-MWSP curds was more dense and homogeneous network due to the addition of hydrolyzed rice. However, the surface structure of all rice-MWSP curds became rough and showed a non-homogeneous network after cold storage.

The separative preconcentration of trace mercury[Hg(II)] in a water sample was studied by a coprecipitation flotation technique. The trace Hg(II) was precipitated together with Ce(OH)$_3$ by adding 3.0 ml of 0.1M Ce$^{3+}$ solution to 1,000 ml of water sample and adjusting pH to 11.0 with 1.0M NaOH solution. The hydrophobic precipitate[Ce(OH)$_3$-Hg(OH)$_2$], which was formed by adding 2.0 ml of 0.1${\%}$ ethanolic sodium oleate solution, were floated on the surface with an aid of tiny nitrogen gas bubbles. The floated materials were quatitatively collected in a suction flask and dissolved with 5.0 ml of 2.0M HNO$_3$. The solution was marked to 25.00 ml with a deionized water. The content of Hg(II) was determined by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Any interferences of concomitants such as Ag$^+$, Br$^-$, I$^- $, etc. were not observed on the whole procedure. The analytical result showed that Hg(II) found in the wastewater of Seochang Campus, Korea University was 1.98 ng/ml with the relative standard deviation of 3.6${\%}$. And recoveries of Hg(II) in the wastewater into which 1.0 ng/ml and 2.0 ng/ml were added were 95${\%}$ and 91${\%}$, respectively. From such results, this procedure could be concluded to be tolerably accurate and reproducible for the determination of trace mercury in a water sample.
The Holocene climate change has been studied based on humus analysis of sediments that came from the Nam River basin in the Jinju, Gyeongnam. Humus and soil organic carbon analyses were performed to interpret the climate change and OSL dating and radiocarbon dating were conducted to determine the age of the sediments. The age determinations revealed that the sediments were formed approximately from $10,000{\pm}100$ yr. BP to $4,370{\pm}50$ yr. BP (2,970 BC) The deposits were classified into five layers based on sediments color and texture, and the climate change of each layer has been interpreted. The general climate was found out to be warm. The study result illustrated that section I was the lowest layer and section V the highest among the five surveyed sections. One the other hand, relatively cold events were detected in the sections ranging from I and II to III in terms of temperature. In term of humidity, sections II and III are estimated to have been relatively dry. Sections IV and V were relatively warm and dry, and the section IV tends to be warmest of the entire sedimentary. In addition, there is a tendency that the total soil organic carbon shows relatively high values under the cooler and humid climatic condition.
In this study, an attempt was made to investigate the probable organelles participating in the secretion of biligrafin. The animals (ICR male mice, 25-30gm) were divided into normal control and 6 biligrafin injected groups to which 30% biligrafin (0.006ml/gm b.w.) were injected at 10, 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 min prior to the sampling. The mice of each group were perfused through the heart with ice-cold 2.5% glutaraldehyde buffered with 0.1M Na-cacodylate (pH. 7.4) under the Na-pentobarbital (Nembtal 0.0015mg/gm b.w.) anesthesia and liver tissues were taken from each group. Some specimens were immersed 1 hr in the same solution used in the perfusion. After an overnight rinse in 0.1M Na-cacodylate buffer containing 10% DMSO and 7.6% sucrose, $75{\mu}m$ fronzen sections were made for cytochemical study. The sections were incubated in thiamin pyrophosphatase (TPPase) and inosine diphosphatase (ID Pase) media for 70 min at $37^{\circ}C$ respectively and acid phosphatase (AcPase) medium for 40 min at $37^{\circ}C$. They were postfixed in 1 % $OsO_4$ for 1 hr. The other specimens were immersed for 8 hrs in the fixative consisting of 2.5% glutaraldehyde and 3.0% paraformaldehyde buffered with Na-cacodylate (pH. 7.4). All of the osmificated specimens were processed for electron microscopy. In both normal and biligrafin injected groups, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), vacuoles, Golgi apparatus and lysosomes were seen in the vicinity of bile canaliculus. In the biligrafin injected groups, however, the Golgi apparatus appeared to be decreased and ER and vacuoles were dilated and increased. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) having a few attached ribosomes appeared to be the round saccule, especially at 20 min after biligrafin injection. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) seemed to be formed by the detachment of ribosomes at the cisternal end of RER. The cistern of SER showed saccules which probably budded off to form the vacuole. The vacuoles were devoid of visible centents. This finding seemed to be in agreement with the biochemical property of the bile constituents. The fusion between the vacuoles and bile canaliculus were frequently seen in the groups injected with biligrafin. The lysosome did not show any changes in the biligrafin injected groups. Accumulation of some material and lipid droplets were seen at the 40 and 80 min after biligrafin injection, especially at the latter. At 160 and 320 min after biligrafin injections, however, they were decreased successively while the RER stack, free ribosomes and polysomes were increased. Although the reactive products of TPPase and IDPase were observed in the ER saccules and vesicles of the normal control and biligrafin injected groups, the fusion between the bile canaliculus and saccules or vesicles could easily be seen in the latter. The AcPase activity, however, was observed in the cistern at the maturing face of Golgi apparatus and lysosomes in both normal and biligrafin groups. The results suggest that the biligrafin is excreted via the vesicles, vacuoles or sacoules probably derived from the SER without the participation of Golgi apparatus and lysosomes, and the excess amount of material is stored as inclusions during the repairing of the organelles being overactive.
This research was conducted to develop a method to remove the effect of surface temperature of Shingo pears for sugar content measurement. Sugar content was measured by a near-infrared spectrum analysis technique. Reflected spectrum and sugar content of a pear were used for developing regression models. For the model development, reflected spectrums having wavelengths in the range of 654 to 1,052nm were used. To remove the effect of surface temperature, special sample preparation techniques and partial least square (PLS) regression models were proposed and tested. 71 Shingo pears stored in a cold storage, which had 2$^{\circ}C$ inside temperature, were taken out and left in a room temperature for a while. Temperature and reflected spectrum of each pear was measured. To increase the temperature distribution of samples, temperature and reflected spectrum of each pear was measured four times with one hour twenty minutes interval. During the experiment, temperature of pears increased up to 17 $^{\circ}C$. The total number of measured spectrum was 284. Three groups of spectrum data were formed according to temperature distribution. First group had surface temperature of 14$^{\circ}C$ and total number of 51. Second group consisted of the first and the fourth experiment data which contained the minimum and the maximum temperatures. Third group consisted of 155 data with normal temperature-distribution. The rest data set were used for model evaluation. Results shelved that PLS model I, which was developed by using the first data group, was inadequate for measuring sugar content of pears which had different surface temperatures from 14$^{\circ}C$. After temperature compensation, sugar content predictions became close to the measured values. Since using many data which had wide range of surface temperatures, PLS model II and III were able to predict sugar content of pears without additional temperature compensation. PLS model IV, which included the surface temperatures as an independent variable. showed slightly improved performance(R$^2$=0.73). Performance of the model could be enhanced by using samples with more wide range of temperatures and sugar contents.
Three formulations were used to prepare the cellulose-based edible films consisting of hydrocolloid and lipids; film A made by coating method, films B and C by emulsion method, which were formed in a thin layer glass plate and then dried. Films A, B and C were all approximately 0.03 mm thick with 1-3% moisture, 59-68% lipid, and almost whitish color. Film A was better in tensile strength, and lipids affected water vapor permeability on three films, in which films A and B did not differ significantly. Water vapor permeability of film A did not change but those of films B and C decreased significantly after storage for 8 weeks at $-15^{\circ}C$. Oxygen transmission rate and oxygen permeability of films A and C did not differ and changed significantly after 8-week storage at $-15^{\circ}C$. Under scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation on the structural characteristics of each film, film A indicated relatively uniform and smooth surface coatings of beeswax, while films B and C had individual lipid crystals and could be discerned. As a result, film A was better than films B and C in respect of physical properties, but the selection of useful film depended upon which physical property was more functional. Moreover, it was desirable in some cases for using films B and C because of their easiness of preparation and cold storage durability. It will be further needed to investigate how to formulate films B and C to have more unique surface characteristics, and to reduce water vapor and oxygen transmission rates.
