Most of the pollutants from passenger cars are emitted during the cold-transient phase of the FTP-75 test. In order to reduce the exhaust emissions during the cold-transient period, it is essential to warm up the catalyst as fast as possible after the engine starts, and the Unburned Exhaust Gas Ignition (UEGI) technology was developed through our previous studies to help close-coupled catalytic converters (CCC) reach the light-off temperature within a few seconds after cold-start. The UEGI system operates by igniting the unburned exhaust mixture by glow plugs installed upstream of the catalyst. The flame generates a high amount of heat, and if the heat is concentrated on a specific area of monolith surface, then thermal crack or failure of the monolith could occur. Therefore, it is very important to monitor the temperature distribution in the CCC during the UEGI operation, so the local temperatures in the monolith were measured using thermocouples. Experimental results showed that the temperature of CCC rises faster with the UEGI technology, and the CCC reaches the light-off temperature earlier than the baseline case. Under the conditions tested, the light-off time of the baseline case was 62 seconds, compared with 33 seconds for the UEGI case. The peak temperature is well under the thermal melting condition, and temperature distribution is not so severe as to consider thermal stress. It is noted that the UEGI technology is an effective method to warm up the catalyst with a small amount of thermal stress during the cold start period.
Testing was conducted to determine the performance of a residential fuel cell system when subjected to DSS and WSS operation, especially for start-up and shut-down characteristics. In terms of start-up time, it took about 70min to start output power generation and stably to reach 1kW at cold start. Measurement of the characteristics of heat and power generation were carried out at start-up and shut-down time. Fuel gas is used for heating both reformer and stack from start-up to the beginning of power generation. In terms of start-up and shut-down characteristics, it was important to control the reformer temperature precisely. The average output water temperature during the rated output operation(960W) was $63.2^{\circ}C$ constantly. The results of the investigation are being used to develop a new test protocols for residential fuel cell system.

Engine-out HC emissions were investigated during cold and hot start. The tests were conducted according to engine cooling temperatures which were controlled by simulated coolant temperatures of cold and hot start, on a 1.5L, 4-cylinder, 16 valve, multipoint-port-fuel-injection gasoline engine. Real time engine-out HC emissions were measured at a exhaust port and cylinder head using Fast Response Flame Ionization Detector(FRFID). Unburned hydrocarbons emitted at the cold coolant temperature were much higher than those of the hot coolant temperatures. And the main source of the high HC emission was confirmed as misfire at cold coolant temperature. In addition, the effect of intake valve timing on engine-out HC emissions was investigated. The results obtained indicate that optimized intake phasing provides the potential for start-up engine-out HC emissions reduction.
Emission reduction in the cold start period of SI engines is crucial to meet stringent emission regulations such as SULEV Emissoin reduction is the starting point of the study in the which the variable valve timing (VVT) technology may be one promising method to minimize cold start emissions while maintaining engine performance. This is because it is possible to change valve overlap and residual gas fraction during cold start and idle operations. Our previous study showed that spark timing is another important factor for reducing cold-start emissions since it affects warm-up time of close-coupled catalysts (CCC) by changing exhaust gas temperature. However, even though these factors may be favorable for reduction of emissions, they may deteriorate combustion stability in these operating conditions. This means that the two variables should be optimized for best exhaust emissions and engine stability. This study investigated the effects of valve and spark timings in idle performance such as combustion stability and exhaust emissions. Experiments showed that valve timings significantly affected engine stability and exhaust emissions, especially CO and $NO_x$, due to change in residual gas fraction within the combustion chamber. Spark timing also affects HC emissions and exhaust gas temperature. Yet it has no significant effects on combustion stability. A control strategy of proper valve timing and spark timing is suggested in order to achieve a reduction in exhaust emissions and a stable operation of the engine in a cold start and idle operation.

Fuel reforming technology for the fuel cell vehicles could be adopted to internal combustion engine for the reduction of engine out emissions. Since syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel has hydrogen as a major component, it has abilities to enhance the combustion characteristics with wide flammability and high speed flame propagation. In this paper, syngas was feed to 2.0 liter gasoline engine during the cold start and early state of idle condition. Not only cold start HC emission but also $NO_x$ emission could be dramatically reduced due to the fact that syngas has no HC and has nitrogen up to 50% as components. Exhaust gas temperature was lower than that of gasoline feeding condition. Delayed ignition timing, however, resulted in increased exhaust gas temperature approximated to gasoline condition. It is supposed that the usage of syngas in the gasoline internal combustion engine is an effective solution to meet the future strict emission regulations by the reduction of cold start THC and $NO_x$ emissions.
In order to meet the stringent emission regulations, fast light-off of a catalyst is essential to reduce the HC and CO emissions during cold start. Cranking Exhaust Gas Ignition (CEGI) method developed in this study showed that the catalyst reaches the light-off temperature in a few seconds after cold start. The CEGI system cuts off the ignition signal for a few seconds during the cranking period. so the unburned fuel-air mixture bypasses the combustion chamber and flows through the exhaust manifold. When the unburned mixture reaches two glow plugs installed upstream of the catalyst, it burns and releases the thermal energy to heat up the catalyst. Results from the FTP-75 tests showed that the exhaust emissions with the CEGI reduced by 47.7% for THC and by 88.6% for CO in the cold-transient phase of the test.

HC and CO emissions during the cold start contribute the majority of the total emissions in the legislated driving cycles. Therefore, in order to minimize the cold-start emissions, the fast light-off techniques have been developed and presented in the literature. One of the most encouraging strategies for reducing start-up emissions is to place the light-off catalyst, in addition to the main under-body catalyst, near the engine exhaust manifold. This study numerically consider three-dimensional, unsteady compressible reacting flow in the light-off and under body catalyst to examine the impact of a light-off catalyst on thermal response of the under body catalyst and tail pipe emission. The effect of flow distribution on the temperature distribution and emission performance have also been examined. The present results show that flow distribution has a great influence on the temperature distribution in the monolith at the early stage of warm-up process and the ultimate conversion efficiency of light-off catalyst is severly deteriorated when the space velocity is above $100,000hr^{-1}$.

This paper covers the result of construction and start-up tests of the KSLV(Korea Space Launch Vehicle)-II combustion chamber hot-firing test facility. This facility was constructed from 2012 to 2014. Start-up test of this facility began in the second half of 2014. Oxidizer cold flow test, fuel cold flow test and cooling water cold flow test were carried out as start-up test. Afterward, ignition test of combustion chamber was accomplished. The result of ignition test is applied to set up start-up sequence of KSLV-II combustion chamber and utilized as base line data for hot-firing test of low and normal design point.
Among the recent research ideas to reduce hydrocarbon emissions emitted from SI engines till light-off of catalyst since cold start are those exploiting non-thermal plasma technique and photo-catalyst that draws recent attention by virtue of its successful application to practical use to clean up the atmosphere using the feature of its relative independence on temperature. Based on the previous research results obtained with model exhaust gases using an experimental emissions reduction system that utilizes the non-thermal plasma and photo-catalyst technique, further investigation was conducted on a production N/A 1.5 liter DOHC engine during cold start to warm-up. For the effects of non-thermal plasma-photocatalyst combined reactor, 10% concentration reduction was achieved with the fuel component paraffins, and the large increase in non-fuel paraffinic components and acetylene concentrations were similar to those of base condition. However the absolute value was locally a bit higher than those of base condition since the products was made from the dissociation and decomposition of highly branched paraffins by plasma-photocatalyst reactor. Olefinic components were highly decomposed by about 75%, due to these excellent decompositions of olefins which have relatively high MIR values, and the SR value was 1.87 that is 30% reduction from that of base condition, then, the photochemical reactivity was lowered.
Cell degradation when anode channels are blocked during cold start up was tested and measured. Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stacks with several configurations of channel blockages were operated and decay in performance was analyzed. When only channels near hydrogen inlet were blocked, performance was rarely changed. In contrast, significant cell reversal occurred and considerable amount of $CO_2$ was produced when all channels near inlet and outlet were blocked. In the case, it was also observed that performance was severely decreased in the area where hydrogen was not supplied sufficiently.
