  • Due to the international competition and global pressure, the roll speed is increased. However, higher speeds increase the power density in the process as well as the plant's potential to react with vibrations. Under certain operating conditions, vibrations may occur, which again cause chattermarks, strip rupture or coil break fault. The appropriate condition monitoring is needed to improve product quality and availability. The aim of condition monitoring is to reduce maintenance costs, increase productivity and improve product quality. This paper proposes a condition monitoring tool designed for the classification of coil break fault. This method is used to cold rolling mill for faults monitoring based on vibration and motor current signals. The results show that the performance of classification has high accuracy based on experimental work.

  • The Mechanical properties of steel in hot strip mill were associated with the various rolling conditions such as alloy composition, plastic deformation, cooling history and so on. After coiling process of strip which is the end of hot rolling process, the coil can be the final product or can be applied by another process, that is, cold rolling or skin pass rolling with the additional changes of mechanical properties. Skin pass rolling process with the small reduction affects the mechanical properties of the strip. Because many kinds of hot strips are delivered to the customers after the skin pass process, it is important for us to know the skin pass effects for the mechanical properties of the hot rolling strip. In this study, the variations of mechanical properties of the strip after the skin pass rolling will be discussed. Then, the mathematical model will be proposed for the prediction of mechanical properties of the final products with the comparison between measured and calculated values.

  • An electrical steel strip is commonly used as a core material in all types of electric transformers and motors. It is produced by a cold rolling process. In this paper, a damage-mechanics-based approach that predicts the edge fracture of an electrical steel strip during cold rolling is presented. We adopted the normal tensile stress criterion and the fracture energy method as a damage initiation criterion and a damage evolution scheme, respectively. We employed finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate crack initiation and propagation at the initial notch located at the edges of the strip. The material constants required in FEA were experimentally obtained by tensile tests using a standard and a notched sheet-type specimen. The results reveal that the edge crack was initiated at the entrance of the roll bite and that it rapidly evolved at the exit. The evolution length of the edge crack increased as the length of the initial notch as well as the front tension reel force of the strip increased.

  • This study evaluated the enhancement of microstructural and mechanical properties of a cross rolled Ni-10Cr alloy, comparing with conventionally rolled material. Cold rolling was carried out to 90% thickness reduction and the specimens were subsequently annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 min to obtain a fully recrystallized microstructure. Cross roll rolling was carried out at a tilted roll mill condition of $5^{\circ}$ from the transverse direction in the RD-TD plane. In order to observe the deformed microstructures of the cold rolled materials, transmission electron microscopy was employed. For annealed materials after rolling, in order to investigate the grain boundary characteristic distributions, an electron back-scattering diffraction technique was applied. Application of cold rolling to the Ni-10Cr alloy contributed to notable grain refinement, and consequently the average grain size was refined from 135 ${\mu}m$ in the initial material to 9.4 and 4.2 ${\mu}m$ in conventionally rolled and cross rolled materials, respectively, thus showing more significantly refined grains in the cross rolled material. This refined grain size led to enhanced mechanical properties such as yield and tensile strengths, with slightly higher values in the cross rolled material. Furthermore, the <111>//ND texture in the CRR material was better developed compared to that of the CR material, which contributed to enhanced mechanical properties and formability.

  • In this paper an finite element approach for the edge crack analysis of silicon-steel sheet during cold rolling is presented. Based on the damage mechanics, the proposed approach follows the analysis steps which are composed of damage initiation, damage evolution and fracture. Through those steps, we can find out the initiation instant of crack and resulting propagated length and shape of the crack. The material constants related to fracture is experimentally obtained by tension tests using standard sheet-type specimen and notched sheet-type specimen. To evaluate the prediction accuracy, we performed a pilot rolling test with a initially notched sheets. It is shown that the results obtained by the approach converged to the experimental one concerning about the direction and length of propagated crack. The capability of the proposed one is demonstrated through the application to the actual silicon-steel rolling mill.

  • The shape of cold strip for the stainless process has been become issue in quality recently, and hence POSCO (Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd) developed an automatic control system for strip shape in the sendzimir mill. The strip shape is measured by an outward measuring roll and is controlled by As_U roll and first intermediate roll. As_U roll consists of 8 saddles, which are controlled vertically. The fist intermediate rolls, which are controlled horizontally, consist of two pairs of rolls up and down. A developed shape control system is applied to real plant by using fuzzy logic and neural network method to control actuators; As_U roll and first intermediate roll. This system composes mainly of three parts as a real-time system, input to output conditioner board, and man-machine interface. The actual shape is recognized by neural network and converted into symmetric shape. The fuzzy controller, based on the shape from neural network and sensor, controls positions of the As_U roll and first intermediate roll. This paper verifies the shape controller performance. The experiments are made on line for the sendzimir mill. The shape control performance shows very efficient for the target tracking, shape symmetry, and fluctuation of shape.

  • The necessity for more accurate automatic flatness control(AFC) system has increased of customers' requirement for cold rolled steel sheet. Therefore, many cold rolling mills replaced its AFC system with a measuring roll of the contact type form the non-contact type. In this paper. The performance of AFC system of contact type has been investigated under industrial conditions. It has two kinds of actuator: roll bender, spot cooling system. The test results are as follows: The more strip thickness is thick, the smaller the I value, and the more it is thin, the bigger the I value. And a complex distribution of strip tension was controlled, for example, not only a pocket wave but also a simple center wave and edge wave. Because the tension deviation is larger at acceler- ation speed and decelerationspeed than steady speed, AFC system of contact type is better to adopt over 50m/mim. AFC system reduces rapidly large flatness deviation. The maximum I value of strip has been decreased to 13 I, and sticker, defects caused by poor flatness, have been decreased about 60%.

  • A cold roll-bonding process is applied to fabricate an AA6061/AA5052/AA6061/AA5052 layered sheet. Two AA6061 and one AA5052 sheets of 2mm thickness, 40mm width and 300mm length are alternately stacked, then reduced to a thickness of 2.0 mm by multi-pass cold rolling after surface treatment such as degreasing and wire brushing. The rolling is performed at ambient temperature without lubricant using a 2-high mill with a roll diameter of 400 mm at a rolling speed of 6.0 m/sec. The roll-bonded AA6061/AA5052/AA6061/AA5052 layered sheet is then hardened by natural aging (T4) and artificial aging (T6) treatments. The microstructure of the as-roll bonded and the age-hardened Al sheets was revealed by SEM observation; the mechanical properties were investigated by tensile testing and hardness testing. After T4 and T6 aging treatment, the specimens had a recrystallization structure consisting of coarse equiaxed grains in both AA5052 and AA6061 regions. The as-roll-bonded specimen showed a clad structure in which the hardness of AA5052 regions was higher than that of AA6061 regions. However, after T4 and T6 aging treatment, specimens exhibited different structures, with hardness of AA6061 regions higher than that of AA5052 regions. Strengths of T6 and T4 age-treated specimens were found to increase by 1.55 and 1.36 times, respectively, compared to the value of the starting material.

  • POSCO Kwang-Yang Works #2 Cold Rolling Mill RCL has the main hydraulic system that controlled on/off control method. In the aspect of the consumption of electrical energy this system has some problem. So, we present a continuous control method instead of on/off control method that controls the pressure of main hydraulic system with saving the electric energy.

  • The cold rolled strip meets continuously rising demands on the less deviation of thickness at the width direction of their rolled products. Especially, the special interest has been to find the methods to reduce the edge drop which influences seriously on the yield losses and the quality of the rolled products. In this study, the influence of hot coils on the thickness profile of cold rolled strip was analyzed. For obtainint the tapered work roll shig\ft conditions, the thermal crown and the flattening between the work roll and the strip were calculated, and the main parameters which have mostly effects on the edge drop were simulated. Also the obtained conditions from the simulation were applied to Tandem Cold Rolling Mill to investigate the change of the edge drop and the crown ratio depending on the amount of work roll taper and the length of contact of taper. The results of the application led to better thickness profile than conventional one.
