A numerical experiment is made in order to clarify the mechanism of the upwelling phenomenon along the coast near the poleward edge of the western boundary current. The possibility of the upwelling is suggested from the analysis of the observational data in the east of Honshu, Japan, and in the south eastern coast of Korean Peninsula. This upwelling phenomenon is very deep and can be traced to the bottom layer. The upwelling phenomenon seems to be a general oceanic feature which characterizes the region along the west coast near the poleward edge of the western boundary current. This experiment is simulating the oceanic condition of the transition region between Kuroshio front and the Oyashio front in the east of Honshu, Japan. The possible explanations of the causes of the upwelling are as follows; In the interior of the modeled ocean the cold heavy water supplied from the north and the warm light water from the south make the north-south gradient of the pressure field and accelerate the eastward current to produce the h-orizontal divergence feld near the west coast. The divergence is compensated by the upwelling near the separation region. Another one is that the upwell-ed cold water strengthen constantly the pressure gradient which is balanced by the northward current and is weakened by the horizontal diffusion.
The variations of cold gas properties such as density, pressure, temperature and velocity which are dependent each other are closely related with the dielectric recovery of an interrupter. So, the pressure-rises at no-load in the puffer cylinder and in front of fixed arcing contact of 800kV model interrupter were measured experimentally using pressure transducers of strain gage type and semiconducting type, respectively. The maximum value of pressure-rise in the puffer cylinder increased almost linearly from 7.6 bar at the minimum operated pressure to 9.7 bar at the maximum operated pressure, while the pressure-rise in front of fixed arcing contact was independent with the operated pressure. The measured values will be utilized in verifying the self-developed cold flow analysis program and as an input of commercialized CFD program package.

In order to utilize fisheries resources under a joint management scheme with adjacent nations, as well as detecting of fishing grounds, the factors which influence yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena polyactis) in Korean waters were studied using historical catch per unit effort and oceanographic data. The main fishing ground near Cheju Island was located along the thermal front formed between the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water (YSBCW) and northward moving warm current. When the YSBCW (index temperature: $10^{\circ}C)$ strongly extended southward, the fishing condition were worse than average. Especially, low temperatures greatly influenced stow net fisheries, which were operated in the deep water layer The concentration and dispersal of fishing ground and catch coincided with oceanographic features and the seasonality of water masses.
The characteristics and fluctuations of structures and spatial distributions of thermal fronts and warm eddy in the Southeastern part of the East sea are discussed based on the data collected by the Naval Academy, Korea during Feb. 6-9, May 9-19 and Oct. 12-18, 1995. The thermal fronts existed very often at the sea off the Pohang-Ulsan, The generation of the thermal front is related with the development of the North Korea Cold Current. The warm eddy is located in the central part of the Ulleung basin where the local depth exceeds 1500m. This warm eddy is a major contributor to mass transport in the northern part of the East Sea. It is evident that knowledge of warm eddy is important in understanding the circulation in the western part of the East Sea.
In the Korean seas, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Thermal Fronts (TF) were analyzed temporally and spatially during 8 years from 1993 to 2000 using NOAA/AVHRR MCSST. As the result of harmonic analysis, distributions of the mean SST were $10~25^{\circ}C,$ and generally SST decreased as latitude increased. SST increased in the order as following; the South Sea $(20\~23^{\circ}C),$ the East Sea $(17\~19^{\circ}C)$, and the West $Sea(13\~16^{\circ}C).$ Annual amplitudes and phases were $4\~11^{\circ}C,\;210\~240^{\circ}$ and high values were shown as following; the West Sea $(A1,\;9\~11^{\circ}C),$ the Northern East Sea $(A5,\;8\~9^{\circ}C),$ the Southern East Sea $(A4,\;6\~8^{\circ}C),$ the South Sea $(A3,\;6\~7^{\circ}C),$ the East China Sea $(A2,\;4\~7^{\circ}C)$ and phases; $A3\;(238\~242^{\circ}),\;A4\;(235\~240^{\circ}),\;A5\;(225\~235^{\circ}),\;Al\;(220\~230^{\circ}),\;A2\;(210\~235^{\circ}),$ respectively, Both of them were related inversely except the area A2, therefore the rest areas were affected by seasonal variations. TF were detected by Soble Edge Detection Method using gradient of SST. Consequently, TF were divided into 4 fronts; the Subpolar Front (SPF) based on the Cold Water Mass (low SST and salinity Subartic Water), resulting from the North Korea Cold Current (NKCC) and the East Sea Proper Cold Water in the middle and low layer, and the Warm Water Mass (high SST and salinity Subtropical Water), resulting from the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) in area A4 and 5, the Kuroshio Front (KF) based on the Kuroshio Current (KC) and shelf waters in the East China Sea (ESC) in A2, and the South Sea Coastal Front (SSCF) based on the South Sea Coastal Water (SSCW) and TWC in A3. Also, the Tidal Front was weakly appeared in AI. TF located in steep slope of submarine topography. Annual amplitudes and phases were bounded in the same place, and these results should be considered to influence of seasonal variations.
Zooplankton distribution in the front zone was investigated in the East Sea of Korea (Sea of Japan). More than 100 taxa appeared in the study area, which was far diverse appearance being compared with those in West (Yellow Sea) and South Sea of Korea. In Nov. 1994, Paracalanus parvus, Oikopleura spp., and Noctiluca scintillans, which preferred warmer environment, predominated at the collection sites in the front zone, especially at warmer surface layer. But in Nov. 1995, when the surface water temperatures were about $2^{\circ}C$ lower than those of the previous year, cold water species of copepod Metridia lucens, immature forms of Calanus and Sagitta, and crustacean eggs dominated in the collection sites in front zone, which were geographically not Identical with those of the previous year. Vertical distributional patterns were not coincide among the taxa. This suggests that zooplankton has different specific habitat characteristics with temperatures. In general, those taxa with preference of warmer environments showed high probability of co-occurrance with low abundances while those that preferring colder environments showed low probability of co-occurrance with high abundances. It seems that warm water contributes to the high diversity of zooplankton in the front zone while cold water does to the high biomass.

To find out generating mechanism of eddies in the polar frontal zone of the East Sea, we carried out a series of numerical experiments using the nonlinear $1^{1/2}-layer$ model allowing the effect of the polar front. We assumed the polar front at about $39^{\circ}N$ in zonal direction with the cold water region in the northern part and the warm water region in the southern part of the model ocean. To examine the effect of the frontal motion without the influence of the Tsushima Current from the beginning of the geostrophic adjustment, the initial state of the model ocean was assumed motionless. Eastward current was caused by the geostrophic adjustment process in the polar frontal zone that induced a steady northward coastal current along the Korean coast to satisfy the mass continuity. The overshooting of this coastal current acted as an initial disturbance of the zonal flow field which caused meanders and eddies. The spatial scales of eddies were in good agreement with the baroclinic instability theory.

In this research, it is to find a method that frost does not form on the outdoor unit to develop a heat pump capable of heating in cold regions. For this reason, we produced an incubator capable of creating an environment of -25℃, and constructed an experimental apparatus so that experiments in the room were possible. However, it is necessary to grasp the characteristics of the air reaching the front of the heat pump outdoor unit installed in the experimental apparatus, and flow analysis was performed using ANSYS CFX, which is general-purpose software. As a result, the flow velocity of the air reaching the front of the outdoor unit in the outdoor unit chamber in the entire region of the simulation conditions (5.0 to 7.5 m/s) has many differences in the upper and lower portions, resulting in a natural state. It turned out that the condition can not be satisfied. Therefore, it is determined that it is necessary to additionally install a frequency divider at the front of the outdoor unit to make the flow velocity constant.
In order to investigate anti-freeze process of precast concrete L-type retaining walls in cold regions, test walls were installed in the campus of Kitami Institute of Technology (KIT, Hokkaido, Japan). The wall consists of following three sections, i) back filled with frost susceptible clay soil, ii) using thermal insulation material, and back filled with frost susceptible soil, iii) back filled with frost-unsusceptible soil. The freezing front distribution and ground temperature within the backfill were observed and deflections of the walls were measured over three freeze-thaw seasons. Some understanding of the mechanisms of the build-up of frost heave pressure was gained, and the effectiveness of replacement method was observed. A simulation was performed to predict the shape of the freezing front in the backfill behind L-type walls with various cross sections. These findings were employed to propose a method for determining the appropriate zone to be replaced with frost unsusceptible backfill material in cold regions.
A numerical simulation of a heavy snowfall event that occurred 13 January 2008 along the Yeongdong coastal area, was performed using WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) in order to reveal mesoscale structures and to construct a conceptual model showing the meteorological background that caused the large difference in snowfall amounts between the Yeongdong mountain area and the Yeongdong coastal area. The simulation results matched well with various observations such as corresponding 12h-accumulated observed precipitation, surface wind obscrvation, radar echoes, and satellite infrared images. The simulation and the observations showed that the scale of the event was of meso - $\beta$ and meso - $\gamma$ scale. The simulation represented well the mesoscale process causing the large difference in snowfall amounts in the two areas. First, wind flow was kept, to a certain extent, from crossing the mountains due to the blocking effect of the low Froude number (~1). The northeast flow over the adjaccnt sea tumcd northwest as it approachcd the mountains, where it was trapped, allowing so-called cold air damming. Second, a strong convergence area formed where the cold northwest flow along the Yeongdong coastal area and the relatively warm and moist northeast flow advecting toward the coast met, supporting the fonllation of a coastal front. Thus, the vertical motion was strongest over the front located near the coast, leading to the heavy snowfall there rather than in the remote mountain area.
