The Occurrence of Weed Species in Coix lacryma-jobi var. mayuen Fields (율무밭에 발생하는 잡초 양상)

  • This study was conducted in order to utilize the basic data for weed control by surveying the occurrence of weed species and the degree of damages caused by those weeds occurred in cultivated Coix lacryma-jobi var. mayuen fields. Survey was carried out three times, from June to September in 2013. The weed flora was composed of a total of 98 weeds, 33 family, of which 58 species were annual, 21 species were biennial, and 19 were perennial plants. Thirty-one exotic species were included as well. Dominance was the highest with Digitaria ciliaris followed by Acalypha australis, Echinochloa crus-galli, Portulaca oleracea, Bidens frondosa etc. in order. In the PCA plot analysis, weeds occurred in C. lacryma-jobi var. mayuen fields were divided into three groups, Panicum dichotomitlorum community, Echinochloa crus-galli-Sigesbeckia pubescens community and Acalypha australis community. Yield of C. lacryma-jobi var. mayuen was reduced 60% in no weeding plots comparing to that in weed management plots.

Effects of Water Potential on Plant Growth and Aerenchyma Development in Adlay(Coix lacryma-jobi L. var. mayuen) (토양수분 차이가 율무의 생장과 통기조직 발달에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of different water potential on the growth and aerenchyma development of Adlay(Coix lacryma-jobi L. var. mayuen) were studied under every 3 days intermittent irrigation as a control at different growth stages, flooded pot condition and drought. Adlay could not germinate in the anaerobic soil conditions with excessive moisture while it wasn't inflicted with moisture damage after sprouting. Sprouted adlay can grow under flooded soil moisture condition because it's root has orthostichy cell, ventilating structure and cortex. Proping or ventilating roots were generated from adlay grown under flooded pots. Drought damage inflicted at the heading stage was the most severe.

Improvement Effect of Sprout of Coix lacryma-jobi var. mayuen Stapf Water Extract on DSS-Induced Ulcerative Colitis in Mice. (DSS로 궤양성 대장염 유발된 동물모델에서 의이아(薏苡芽) 열수 추출물의 개선 효과)

  • Objectives : The objective of this study was to investigate the improvement effect of Sprout of Coix lacryma-jobi var. mayuen Stapf water extract (SC) on the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis mice. Methods : The antioxidant activity of SC was measured through total polyphenol and total flavonoid content in vitro. The experiment was conducted with seven-week-old male Balb/c mice. After 1 week adaptation, acute colitis was induced by oral administration of 5% DSS dissolved in drinking water, for 7 days. And normal mice received drinking water without DSS throughout the entire experimental period. For each experiment, the mice were divided into 4 groups and 24 colitis mice were arbitrarily allocated into 3 groups (n = 8/group); Normal group, Control group, SC 100 mg/kg treated group (SCL), SC 200 mg/kg treated group (SCH). Serum and colon tissues were collected after one weeks of drug administration. Results : ROS levels, ONOO- levels, AST, and ALT in serum were decreased in SC treated groups compared to the control group. Western blotting measurements of Nrf2, HO-1, SOD, catalase, GPx-1/2, IL-4, IL-10, and Bcl2 showed that the SC treated groups was increased compared to the Control group. Also, western blot measurements of NF-κBp65, p-IκBα, COX-2, iNOS, TNF-α, IL-1β, Bax, and Caspase-3 showed that the SC treated groups was reduced compared to the Control group. Conclusion : Taken together, these results suggest that SC treatment can attenuate the DSS-induced colitis though inhibiting NF-κB pathway and enhancing Nrf2 pathway. Therefore, SC was the potential to be used as a natural therapeutic drug.

Coix lacryma-jobi var. mayuen Stapf Sprout Extract Ameliorates High-Fat Diet-Induced Obesity by Upregulating LKB1/AMPK Signaling (LKB1/AMPK 신호 전달 경로의 활성화로 인한 새싹율무 열수 추출물의 항비만 효과)

  • Objectives : AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key metabolic regulator that reduces lipogenesis. AMPK is mainly activated via phosphorylation of liver kinase B (LKB) 1 under energy stress. Here, we highlighted the anti-obesity effect and underlying mechanism of Coix lacryma-jobi var. mayuen Stapf sprout water extract (CSW) sprout extract in connection with the LKB1/AMPK signaling pathway. Methods : C57BL/6 mice (20~25 g) fed HFD to induce obesity and at the same time administered CSW 100 mg/kg (CSWL; (CSWL; CSW low concentration) or CSW 200 mg/kg (CSWH; CSW high concentration) or Garcinia extract (Garcinia) 200 mg/kg orally for 6 weeks. Body weight and food intake were measured at the same time each day. After 6 weeks of CSW administration, liver tissue and serum were obtained through an autopsy. After the end of the experiment, biochemical analysis (triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), HDL-cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol) was performed on the serum. And then, protein levels related to TG and TC synthesis were measured through western blot analysis in liver tissue. Results : As a result, serum TG, TC, and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly increased in the control group and significantly decreased in the CSW administration group. On the other hand, the HDL-cholesterol level was increased in the CSW-administered group. And as a result of Western blot analysis, CSW significantly increased the phosphorylation of LKB1 & AMPK, and remarkably decreased the expression of factors related to TG and TC synthesis. Conclusions : Our findings suggest that CSW influences the TG and TC synthesis to positively affect HFD-induced obesity in C57BL/6 mice.

Biological activity in hot water extract from fermented Coix lacryma-jobi L. var. mayuen Stapf. by Hericium erinaceum (Bull. : Fr.) (노루궁뎅이균사발효 율무 열수추출물의 유용성분 및 생리활성)

  • This study was conducted to determine the antioxidant, nitrite scavenging, melanin tyrosinase inhibitory, and melanogenesis inhibitory activities of fermented Coix lacryma-jobi L. var. mayuen Stapf. by Hericium erinaceum (Bull.: Fr.) mycelial hot water extract (FCLHE). Additionally, we analyzed β-glucan and ergosterol contents in FCLHE and C. lacryma-jobi hot water extract (CLHE). The ergosterol and β-glucan contents in FCLHE were 740.2 mg% and 245.3 mg%, respectively, whereas these components were not detected in CLHE. FCLHE showed higher cell viability than CLHE. When B16F10 cells were treated with 500 ㎍/mL each of CLHE and FCLHE, the FCLHE treated cells produced 8.9 uM nitric oxide (NO), which was lower than that produced by CLHE treated cells (10.6 uM). The FCLHE treated cells showed significantly greater tyrosinase inhibition and melanin production at all tested concentrations than when compared to the CLHE treated group. Antioxidant parameters such as DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were higher in FCLHE than in CLHE. These results suggest that FCLHE can be used as a raw material for functional foods, for food additives, and in the cosmetic industry.

Effects of Methanolic Extracts from Some Native Plant Resources and Medicinal Plants on Early Seedling Growth of Rice(Oryza sativa L.) (국내 식물자원 및 약용식물 추출물이 벼 유묘 생장에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to identify plant growth promoting effects of native plant resources and medicinal plants. 65 kinds of plant extracts from 64 species were evaluated based on two rice(Oryza sativa) seedling bioassays for gibberellins and gibberellin-like substances. 12 extracts of Artemisia princeps stem and leaf, Cirsium japonicum var. maackii whole plant, Rhododendron mucronulatum branch and leaf, Phragmites communis stem, Coix lacryma-jobi var. mayuen whole plant, Lespedeza bicolor branch and leaf, Hydrangea serrata f. acuminata whole plant, Phlomis umbrosa whole plant, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Rhizome, G. uralensis stem and leaf, Angelica gigas root, and Cnidium officinale rhizome showed growth promotion of rice seedlings. Our results suggested that the parts of these plants could be the potential sources as farm-made liquid fertilizers for plant growth promotion.

Morphological and Growth Characteristics of Collected Coix lacryma-jopbi mayuen STAF in Korea (율무 국내수집종(國內蒐集種)의 형태(形態) 및 생육(生育) 특성(特性))

  • This research was conducted to investigate morpological and growth characteristics of 358 Coix lacryma-jopbi mayuen STAF collected in Korea. The test collections contained 76% medium wide-type leaf, 59% medium size-type seed, 34% large size-type seed, 70% elliptical-type shell, 50% brown shell color, 92% low stem color and hardness of seed coat averaged $3.4kg/cm^2$ with the range of $1.1{\sim}18.7kg/cm^2$. 24% adaptable plant height ranged from 156cm to 170cm, days to heading after seeding averaged 83.2% with the range of $74{\sim}94$ days, early maturating varietes was 24.9% below 80 days. Rate to leaf blight 48.5% with the range of $9{\sim}92%$ and rate to stem borer averaged 8% with the range of $0{\sim}17%$. The weight of 1000 seeds showed positive correlation with days to flowering and plant height and number of seeds per plant showed positive corrleation with percentage of ripness, but weight of 1000 seeds showed negative correlation with occurrence of leaf blight and stem borer plant. Therefore we are expecting useful germplasm and selectable index for effective breeding.

New Variety 'Johyun' of Coix lacryma-jobi var. mayuen Stapf with Early Maturity and Short Plant Height (율무 조숙 단간 다수성 신품종 '조현')

  • ‘Johyun’ was a new adlay variety which was developed from three way crosses of (Suwon-6xOkayama)x UCN300-25 at the Northern Agricultural Research Station, Gyeonggi Province ARES. This variety had purple sheath and green leaf blade in primitive growth stage and green leaf and culm in heading stage. Colors of pistil and seed coat were milky-white and dark-brown, respectively. Plant height of Johyun was 179 cm and shortened 22 cm less than Yulmoo-1 which was tested by check variety. Johyun shortened 8 days of heading date and 15 days of ripening date compared with Yulmoo-1. Yield of Johyun was 320 kg/10a of hulled grains in three regional yield trials and 18% higher than Yulmoo-1. This variety was adaptable to single cropping in central and northern region of Korea.
