Four specimens of unknown Coilia sp. were collected for the first time from the Yellow Sea in 2008 and compared with Coilia mystus and Coilia nasus. Coilia sp. showed similar morphology to C. mystus and C. nasus, but differed in that its tail was considerably shorter. We conducted an analysis of the morphological and genetic characteristics in an effort to clarify the taxonomic position of Coilia sp. In counts and measurements, Coilia sp. were well distinguished from C. nasus by the number of scutes (42-44 in Coilia sp. vs. 40-45 in C. mystus vs. 45-55 in C. nasus), ratio of dorsal base length to head length (43.4-47.6 vs. 37.9-47.6 vs. 33.0-41.0), and eye length to head length (19.2-20.8 vs. 17.0-22.4 vs. 13.8-18.2). In caudal skeleton of Coilia sp., urostyle, hypural and epural bones were not observed; instead of them, caudal fin rays were supported by the last vertebra, neural and haemal spines' extension. The molecular phylogenetic relationship was analyzed using 414 base-pair 12S rRNA mitochondrial DNA sequences. The Kimura-2-parameter distance between Coilia sp. and C. mystus was 0.3%, but was 1.3% between Coilia sp. and C. nasus. Both the neighbor-joining tree and maximum-likelihood tree showed that Coilia sp. are closely clustered with C. mystus. Therefore, our results suggest that the Coilia sp. may be a deformed fish of C. mystus.
The feeding habits of Coilia nasus were studied using 107 specimens collected from January to December 2005 in the coastal waters off Gori, Korea. The size of C. nasus ranged from 8.4 to 29.5 cm in standard length (SL). C. nasus was a carnivore that mainly consumed shrimps and copepods. Its diet also included small quantities of amphipods, euphausiids and chaetognaths. The feeding strategy graphical method reveled than C. nasus was specialized feeder and showed narrow niche width. Both small and large size class of C. nasus mainly consumed shrimps and copepods, and did not showed significant size-related changes in feeding habits. However, the mean number and weight of preys per stomach was higher than large size class than small size class.
The author established a PCR-based genetic platform to examine the hierarchical polar dendrogram of Euclidean genetic distances of one tailfin anchovy population, especially for Coilia nasus, which was further associated with other fish population, by connecting with specifically designed oligonucleotide primer sets. Five oligonucleotide primers were used to generate a total of 260 and 211 scorable fragments in Coilia populations I and II, respectively. The DNA fragments ranged from greater than (approximately) 100 to more than 2,000 bp. The average bandsharing values (BS) of individuals from the anchovy population I (0.693) displayed higher values than individuals from population II (0.675). The genetic distance between individuals established the existence of a close relationship in group II. Comparatively, individuals of one anchovy population were fairly related to other fish populations, as shown in the polar hierarchical dendrogram of Euclidean genetic distances. The noteworthy genetic distance determined between two Coilia nasus populations demonstrates that this PCR technique can be applied as one of the several devices for individuals and/or population biological DNA researches undertaken for safeguarding species and for production of anchovies in the littoral area of Korea.
Species composition and abundance of fish larvae were studied from May 1988 through August 1989 in the Han River Estuary and adjacent Kyunggi Bay, Korea. Of 23 taxa identified, Coilia nasus, llisha elongata, and Cyprinidae spp. were dominated. Maximum density (3,5771/1,000m)$^3$ occurred in August 1988 and minimum (3/1,m$^3$) in February 1989. O1igo- ormesohaline species dominated during ebb tides while polyhaline species during flood tides. Correspondence analysis revealed that three distinctive species groups; oligohaline species, Coilia nasus, Ilisha elongata and Cyprinidae spp., which dominated at both channels of Kwanghwa Island (stations 1, 2), mesohaline species, Sardinella zunasi and Gobiidae spp., at the mouth of Yeomha Channel (station 3), and polyhaline species, Engraulis japonicus and Syngnathus schlegeli, in the middle of Kyunggi Bay (station 4). Coilia nasus was the most abundant species and reported first time in the study area. Given the species composition and density of fish larvae, the Han River Estuary is considered to be a major spawning and nursery ground for brackish water species such as Coilia nasus, Ilisha elongata and some Cyprinidae spp.
Reproductive cycle, gonadal development and the spawning period of the Korean anchovy Coilia nasus were investigated by histologhical observations. Samples were collected at the coastal area of Geumgang dyke which is connected to Gunsan and Janghang, Korea, from February 2002 to January 2003. C. nasus is dioecious; the ovary consists of a pair of saccular structure with many ovarian lobules, and the testis consists of a pair of lobular structure with many testicular lobules and connected to the posterior seminal vesicle. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) began to increase in April when seawater temperature increased and reached the maximum in June when the ovary was getting mature, the summer season of longer day length with higher water temperature. The reproductive cycle can be classified into five successive stage in females: early growing stage (February to March), late growing stage (March to April), mature stage (May to June), ripe and spent stage (June to July), and recovery and resting stage (July to January): in males, the cycle can be divided into four successive stages; growing stage (February to April), mature stage (May to July), ripe and spent (June to July), and recovery and resting stages (July to January). According to the frequency distributions of egg diameters in the spawning season. C. nasus is presumed to be summer spawning species and polycyclic species to spawn 2 times or more during the spawning season.
The gonadosomatic index (GSI), fatness, ovarian development, first sexual maturity, and fecundity of the Korean anchovy Coilia nasus were investigated by histological observations and morphometric analysis from January to December, 2007. The GSI and fatness began to increase in February, and reached the maximum in June when the ovary was getting mature and spawning occurred. Thereafter these parametes rapidly decreased in July when spawning occurred. Therefore, monthly changes in the GSI and fatness were closely related to ovarian maturation and spawning. The duration of ovarian development in females can be classified into five successive stages: early growing stage (February to March), late growing stage (March to April), mature stage (May to June), ripe and spent stage (June to July), and recovery and resting stage (December to January). Maturation and spawning of this species occurred between June and July during the period of high seawater temperature-long day length. Percentages of first sexual maturity in female individuals were over 50% for fish ranging 24.1 to 27.0 cm in total length, and 100% for fish over 30.1 cm in total length. The number of total eggs and mature eggs in the absolute fecundity were increased with the increase of total length and body weight, respectively. The number of total eggs and mature eggs in relative fecundity were also proportional to total length, but rather these numbers decreased in the maximum body weight (126.0${\sim}$150.0 g).
Taxonomic revision of the family Engraulidae was conducted based on the specimens collected from the coasts of Korean Peninsula from 1990 to 1995. Seven species representing four genera are reviewed, and provisional keys to the species and genera are provided with synonyms and their distributions. Thryssa adelae (Rutter, 1897) newly reported from Korea is redescribed in this paper. Thryssa kammalensis (Bleeker, 1849) is a synonym of Thryssa koreana or Thryssa chefuensis. Setipinna tenuifilis (Valenciennes, 1848) is proposed as a replacement name for Setipinna taty, Thryssa adelae (Rutter, 1897) for Thryssa mystax and Thryssa purava, Coilia nasus Schlegel 1846 for Coilia ectenes. Most species of clupeoid fishes in Korea are shared with Chinese and Japanese faunas including tropical and temperature species without endemics.

In this study, seven oligonucleotides primers were shown to generate the shared loci, specific loci, unique shared loci to each species and shared loci by the three species which could be obviously calculated. Euclidean genetic distances within- and between-species were also calculated by complete linkage method with the sustenance of the hierarchical dendrogram program Systat version 13. The genomic DNA isolated from herring (Clupea pallasii), Korean anchovy (Coilia nasus) and large-eyed herring (Harengula zunashi), respectively, in the Yellow Sea, were amplified several times by PCR reaction. The hierarchical dendrogram shows three chief branches: cluster 1 (PALLASII 01, 02, 03, 04, 06 and 07), cluster 2 (NASUS 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14), and cluster 3 (ZUNASHI 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and PALLASII 05). In three clupeid species, the shortest genetic distance displaying significant molecular difference was between individual PALLASII no. 03 and PALLASII no. 02 (0.018). Individual no. 06 of PALLASII was most distantly related to NASUS no. 11 (genetic distance = 0.318). Individuals from herring (C. pallasii) species (0.920) exhibited higher bandsharing values than did individuals from Korean anchovy (C. nasus) species (0.872) (P<0.05). As a result, this PCR analysis generated on the genetic data displayed that the herring (C. pallasii) species was widely separated from Korean anchovy (C. nasus) species. Reversely, individuals of Korean anchovy (C. nasus) species were a little closely related to those of large-eyed herring (H. zunashi) species.
