Limit analysis of upper and lower bound solutions has been well developed to provide the stability numbers for shallow tunnels in cohesive soil ($c_u$ material), cohesive-frictional soil (c'-$\phi$' material) and cohesionless soil ($\phi$'material). However, an extension of these methods to relatively deep circular tunnels in the cohesionless soil has been explored rarely to date. For this reason, the closed-form analytical solutions including lower bound solution based on the stress discontinuity concept and upper bound solution based on the kinematically admissible failure mechanism were proposed for assessing tunnel collapse load in this study. Consequently, the tunnel collapse load from those solutions was compared with both the finite element analysis and the previous analytical bound solutions and shown to be in good agreement with the FE results, in particular with the FE soil elements located on the horizontal tunnel axis.

A series of model tests is performed to evaluate the relationship between soil and a buried pipe in soil undergoing lateral movement. As the result of the model tests, a wedge zone and plastic flow zones could be observed in front of the pipe. And also an arc failure of cylindrical cavity could be observed at both upper and lower zones. Failure shapes in both cohesionless and cohesive soils are nearly same, which was investigated failure angle of $45^{\circ}+{\phi}/2$. In the cohesionless soil, the higher relative density produces the larger arc of cylindrical cavity. On the basis of failure mode observed from model tests, the lateral earth pressure acting on a buried pipe in soil undergoing lateral movement could be applying the cylindrical cavity extension mode. The deformation behavior of soils was typically appeared in three divisions, which are elastic zones, plastic zones and pressure behavior zones.

Numerical analyses were carried out to simulate tilting control on the suction pile for offshore wind power embedded into cohesive soil and cohesionless soil using finite element software, ABAQUS. A 3-dimensional suction pile was modelled as a wished-in-place pile with $1^{\circ}$ tilted from vertical line. The inner room of suction pile was divided into 3 separate rooms for tilting control, and point load was applied to the center of gravity of a separate room to restore the original position of the suction pile. From numerical analyses, required suction pressure was obtained for desired tilting degree, and the maximum/minimum principle stresses of concrete skirt and the Mises stresses of inner steel wall were collected at original position. It was found that the required suction pressure was about 410 kPa for cohesive soil, and about 1,800 kPa for cohesionless soil.; likewise, obtained stresses were greater for cohesionless soil than cohesive soil.

Laboratory calibration chamber tests for cone penetrometers, pressuremeters and dilatometers in cohesionless soil specimens have been conducted by numerous researchers. However, there have been only few applications to compacted or preconsolidated cohesive soils. Therefore, for the first time, Calibration Chamber System was developed in Korea University. This can be attributed to the extremely time consuming and laborious process involved in the preparation of large cohesive soil specimens in addition to other complexities involving instrumentation for pore pressure monitoring and the need for maintaing saturation by back pressure. Chamber System with similar principle as LSU Chamber System was made of more strengthen and complementary form by increasing system diameter(1.2m), carrying out 1st and 2nd consolidation process in one system for smooth and safe work, accurate Data Aquisition.
This paper examines the results of full-scale field tests on micropiles and side resistance is evaluated with respect to axial displacements and soil properties. Both cohesive and cohesionless soils are included in this evaluation. For all practical purposes, the developed load-displacement relationship and the geotechnical soil properties for each micropile and soil type can be used to represent the available data well through normalized average values and empirical correlations. There is a significant difference in load-carrying capacity between micropiles and drilled shafts that results primarily from the micropile pressure-grouting installation effects on the state of stress in the ground. The results show that micropiles can have a significant increase of capacity over larger-diameter drilled shafts at shallower depths with D/B < 100 or so. In cohesive soils, the typical increase is on the order of 1.5 with values as high as 2.5. For cohesionless soils, the typical increases are in the range of 1.5 to 2.5 with values as high as 6.
Coulomb's theory has been usually used in practice to obtain lateral earth pressure against retaining wall. Such theory is based in the assumption that the lateral pressure is a tai angular distribution, since the point of applying the lateral thrust cannot be obtained by using it. However, the results of laboratory and field tests showed that the lateral pressure was not a triangular but a nonlinear distribution. To overcome the drawback of the Coulomb's theory, the different theoretical approaches(Handy, 1985. Kingsley, 1989 : Kellogg, 1993, Chung et at,1993, 1996a) were performed for gravity wall backfilled by cohesionless soil. On the other hand, for retaining wall backfilled by ,cohesive soil, theoretical analyses were carried out only on the basis of the Rankine's or Coulomb's concepts, but the equations showed different results. Here was newly derived the equations of lateral pressures under undrained condition against gravity wall backfilled by cohesive soil. They were based on the Coulomb's wedge, adopted the arching concept. Some of the equations were derived by neglecting tension crack, while the others by considering it. Comparative results for applying different examples showed that the equation considering tension crack might be reasonable.

A key parameter in the design of a laterally loaded pile is the determination of its performance level. Performance level of a pile is usually expressed as the maximum head deflection and bending moment. In general, uncertainties in the performance of a pile originates from many factors such as inherent variability of soil properties, inadequate soil exploration programs, errors taking place in the determination of soil parameters, limited calculation models as well as uncertainties in loads. This makes it difficult for practicing engineers to decide for the reliability of laterally loaded piles both in cohesive and cohesionless soils. In this paper, limit state functions and consequent performance functions are obtained for single concrete piles to predict the maximum bending moment, a widely accepted design criterion along with the permissible pile head displacement. Analyses were made utilizing three dimensional finite element method and soil-structure-interaction (SSI) effects were accounted for.
The coupled soil-pile-structure seismic response is recently in the spotlight of researchers because of its extensive applications in the different fields of engineering such as bridges, offshore platforms, wind turbines, and buildings. In this paper, a simple analytical model is developed to evaluate the dynamic performance of seismically isolated bridges considering triple interactions of soil, piles, and bridges simultaneously. Novel expressions are proposed to present the dynamic behavior of pile groups in inhomogeneous soils with various shear modulus along with depth. Both cohesive and cohesionless soil deposits can be simulated by this analytical model with a generalized function of varied shear modulus along the soil depth belonging to an inhomogeneous stratum. The methodology is discussed in detail and validated by rigorous dynamic solution of 3D continuum modeling, and time history analysis of centrifuge tests. The proposed analytical model accuracy is guaranteed by the acceptable agreement between the experimental/numerical and analytical results. A comparison of the proposed linear model results with nonlinear centrifuge tests showed that during moderate (frequent) earthquakes the relative differences in responses of the superstructure and the pile cap can be ignored. However, during strong excitations, the response calculated in the linear time history analysis is always lower than the real conditions with the nonlinear behavior of the soil-pile-bridge system. The current simple and efficient method provides the accuracy and the least computational costs in comparison to the full three-dimensional analyses.
Bearing capacity of shallow foundations is often determined for either dry or saturated soils. In some occasions, foundations may be subjected to external loading which is inclined and/or eccentric. In this study, the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations resting on partially saturated coarse-grained cohesionless and fine-grained cohesive soils subjected to a wide range of combined vertical (V) - horizontal (H) - moment (M) loadings is rigorously evaluated using the well-established limit equilibrium method. The unified effective stress approach as well as the suction stress concept is effectively adopted so as to simulate the behaviour of the underlying unsaturated soil medium. In order to obtain the bearing capacity, four equilibrium equations are solved by adopting Coulomb failure mechanism and Bishop effective stress concept and also considering a linear variation of the induced matric suction beneath the foundation. The general failure loci of the shallow foundations resting on unsaturated soils at different hydraulic conditions are presented in V - H - M spaces. The results indicate that the matric suction has a marked influence on the bearing capacity of shallow foundations. In addition, the effect of induced suction on the ultimate bearing capacity of obliquely-loaded foundations is more pronounced than that of the eccentrically-loaded footings.

Among several methods for determining the allowable lateral resistances of piles, the subgrade reaction method and ultimate lateral resistance method are generally used. To determine the effects of the soil conditions, pile head restraint conditions, and pile lengths on determining the allowable lateral resistances of piles, computations of the allowable lateral resistances of piles using the two methods were executed, and the computation results were compared. For piles in soft cohesive soil, the pile design is governed by the allowable lateral resistance of a pile from subgrade soil reaction method regardless of the pile head restraints conditions and pile lengths. The allowable lateral resistance of a pile from the ultimate lateral resistance governs the design as the undrained shear strength increases. Except for the case of a short pile, which is installed in loose granular soil, the allowable lateral resistance of a pile from ultimate lateral resistance governs the design of laterally loaded piles. According to this study, computation of the ultimate lateral resistance of a pile is needed, even though some opinions suggest that the design of a laterally loaded pile is satisfied only by the subgrade reaction method. The pile width barely influences the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction. Realistically, the effect of the pile width can be disregarded in the condition of common pile widths of 20~90cm.
