  • The spatial coherence function of laser beam was measured by using a Sagnac interferometer and self referencing technique. For laser beam passing through a narrow slit, absolute value of measured spatial coherence function becomes more symmetric as the slit size is reduced. For diverging beams, the spatial coherence function shows fast oscillations in its real and imaginary parts. We explain this by using a Gaussian Schell-model. One can use this measurement method to study and characterize the property of light field coming out of small sample.

  • Many scholars have persevered in understanding the convergence process by developing a measurement that reflects the characteristics of the convergence phenomenon as a process. Recently a series of studies suggested a framework in terms of diversity and coherence. However, an index for coherence is required to reflect the vital features of the conceptual definition, and thus a new index for coherence is proposed in this paper. Technology Convergence Index combines diversity and coherence and indicates the degree of the convergence in information computer technology (ICT), biotechnology (BT) and nanotechnology (NT) sectors. The index can not only be used to track each technology field that consists of a major technology sector, but also to compare other leading countries. Based on a comparison study between the United States and South Korea, the degrees of technology convergence of Korea in ICT, BT, and NT sectors have ameliorated.

  • The coherence properties of electromagnetic fields are reviewed, based on both the classical and quantum theories. The elementary concepts, employed frequently in the discussion of interference phenomena, are summarized. The well-known interference phenomena are described in terms of second-order coherences. The coherence theory in space-frequency domain is introduced and the coherent mode representation is presented. The generation and propagation of coherence of light are analysed and it is shown that the coherence of light is developed as light propagates. The quantum theory goes parallel with the classical theory, via the optical equivalence theorem. There are, however, certain nonclassical characteristics of light, which may not be easily understood in classical therms. These nonclassical phenomena are believed to originate from the particle aspects of light. The quantum effect on the interfernce phenomena is analysed and finally the outlook of the future research is briefly mentioned.

  • The variation of global coherence on propagation plane by plane is examined in the framework of coherent mode representation. It is explained through concrete examples that the global coherence may in general be enhanced, may be reduced, or may not change. When the mode functions form a complete set and the corresponding eigenvalues are in nitely degenerate, there necessarily develops a certain amount of global coherence on propagation, which is the essence of van Cittert-Zernike theorem. The propagation generates a certain pattern of the eigenvalue spectrum from the initial flat one and this is shown to be related to the non-unitarity of the propagation kernel.

  • Relationship between charge transfer mechanism and quantum coherence has been investigated using a realtime quantum dynamics approach. In the on-the-fly filtered propagator functional path integral simulation, by separating paths that belong to different mechanisms and by integrating contributions of correspondingly sorted paths, it was possible to accurately obtain quantitative contribution of different transport mechanisms. For a 5'-GAGGG-3' DNA sequence, we analyze charge transfer processes quantitatively such that the governing mechanism alters from coherent to incoherent charge transfer with respect to the friction strength arising from dissipative environments. Although the short DNA sequence requires substantially strong dissipation for completely incoherent hopping transfer mechanism, even a weak system-environment interaction markedly destroys the coherence within the quantum mechanical system and the charge transfer dynamics becomes incoherent to some degree. Based on the forward-backward path deviation analysis, the coherence variation depending on the environment is investigated numerically.

  • In order to utilize cache in multiprocessor system, cache coherence problem must be handled. Central directory scheme is one of hardware-assisted cache coherence solutions. The goal of this paper was not only to propose some special methods needed to apply central directory scheme to the specific multiprocessor system based on Intel486 microprocessors but also to design central directory unit for cache coherence of the target system. The problems of arbitrating several requests from processors, storing the cache information, and generating control signals for cache line fill and snoop cycle were solved.

  • Purpose: This study is to grasp factors influencing the quality of life in older adults after total knee replacement. Methods: This study was conducted with 165 older adults who had TKR at four orthopedic hospitals in D city. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple linear regression with SPSS 19.0 software. Results: Pain and depression were negatively correlated with range of motion, social support, while sense of coherence was positively correlated with quality of life. Sense of coherence (43%, ${\beta}=.40$), pain (8%, ${\beta}=-.30$), and depression (3%, ${\beta}=-.20$) on the Physical Component Summary in the quality of life have significant explanatory power of 54%. Sense of coherence (49%, ${\beta}=.44$), social support (6%, ${\beta}=.25$), and depression (3%, ${\beta}=-.22$) on the Mental Component Summary in the quality of life have significant explanatory power of 58%. Conclusion: This study suggests developing a program to improve the quality of life in older adults who had TKR, considering factors such as sense of coherence.

  • We analyzed the measured acoustic field to explore the characteristics of a horizontal coherence in shallow water. Signal spatial coherence data were obtained in the continental shelf off the east coast of Korea using a horizontal line array. The array was deployed on the bottom of 130 m water depth and a sound source was towed at 26 m depth in the source-receiver ranges of 1-13 ㎞. The source transmitted 200 ㎐ pure tone. Topography and temperature profiles along the source track were measured to investigate the relationship between the horizontal coherence and environment variations. The beam bearing disturbance and array signal gain degradation is examined as parameters of horizontal coherence. The results show that the bearing disturbance is about ± 8° and seems to be affected by temporal variations of temperature caused by internal waves. The array signal gains show degradation more than 5㏈ by the temporal and spatial variations of temperature and by the down-sloped topography.

  • The characteristics of the coherence functions of X axial, Y axial, and RZ axial (i.e., body axis) wind forces on the Shanghai World Trade Centre - a 492 m super-tall building with section varying along height are studied via a synchronous multi-pressure measurement of the rigid model in wind tunnel simulating of the turbulent, and the corresponding mathematical expressions are proposed there from. The investigations show that the mathematical expressions of coherence functions in across-wind and torsional-wind directions can be constructed by superimposition of a modified exponential decay function and a peak function caused by turbulent flow and vortex shedding respectively, while that in along-wind direction need only be constructed by the former, similar to that of wind speed. Moreover, an inductive analysis method is proposed to summarize the fitted parameters of the wind force coherence functions of every two measurement levels of altitudes. The comparisons of the first three order generalized force spectra show that the proposed mathematical expressions accord with the experimental results well. Later, the influences of coherence functions on wind-induced dynamic responses are analyzed in detail based on the proposed mathematical expressions and the frequency-domain method of random vibration theory.

  • In this study, a method of leakage detection was proposed to locate leak position for a reservoir pipeline valve system using wavelet coherence analysis for an injected pressure wave. An unsteady flow analyzer handled nonlinear valve maneuver and corresponding experimental result were compared. Time series of pressure head were analyzed through wavelet coherence analysis both for no leak and leak conditions. The leak information can be obtained through either time domain reflectometry or the difference in wavelet coherence level, which provide predictions in terms of leak location. The reconstructed pressure signal facilitates the identification of leak presence comparing with existing wavelet coherence analysis.
