Objective : Emotional state and emotion regulation strategies are considered to be important factors influencing the pattern and severity of somatic pain. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between cognitive emotional regulation strategies and somatic pain in patients with depression and/or anxiety disorders. Methods : A total of 140 outpatients, diagnosed with depression and/or anxiety disorders according to DSM-IV-TR, were evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), and the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for somatic pain. Pearson correlations and independent t-tests were performed to analyze the relationship between somatic pain, the severity of depression and/or anxiety and cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Results : The severity of pain was significantly correlated with depressive symptoms, but not with anxiety. Patients with somatic pain tend to use maladaptive cognitive emotion regulating strategies more frequently, especially rumination and catastrophizing. Conclusion : These findings suggest that somatic pain correlates with maladaptive cognitive emotional regulating strategies. Interventions which modulate these non-productive strategies, especially rumination and catastrophizing, would be a new approach for managing patients with depressive and/or anxiety disorders who are suffering from somatic pain.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to construct and test a structural equation model of posttraumatic growth (PTG) of earthquake victims based on Tedeschi and Calhoun's model (2004). Methods: Data were collected from 195 earthquake victims living in K. City. The exogenous variables include distress perception, resilience, and social support, and the endogenous variables include intrusive rumination, deliberate rumination, and posttraumatic growth. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling were performed. Results: The modified model showed a good fitness to the data. Moreover, 6 of the 9 paths of the final model were statistically significant, which include PTG affected by deliberate rumination (${\beta}=.58$, p<.001), resilience (${\gamma}=.18$, p=.001), and distress perception (${\gamma}=.20$, p=.002). These predictors explain 51.8% of variance in posttraumatic growth. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop and disseminate preventive intervention programs to increase the resilience of earthquake-prone communities. In addition, after exposure to a community-scale traumatic event such as earthquake, we should provide social supports to alleviate distress perception and transition from intrusive rumination to deliberate rumination so that we can seek new meaning from the earthquake and facilitate posttraumatic growth.

The study introduces and validates a model of post-traumatic growth among parents of children with special needs. The model incorporates cognitive processes, coping strategies, and sociocultural factors as intra-personal variables. The statistical analysis unveiled significant pathways that connect the factors, explaining 71% of the variance associated with post-traumatic growth. The study highlighted intentional reflection and robust decentralization skills as crucial factors that predict post-traumatic growth. Deliberate rumination functioned as a mediating factor, reducing the impact of trauma and facilitating post-traumatic growth, while social support played a crucial role in initiating purposeful rumination. The study findings indicate that the effect of self-disclosure on post-traumatic growth is not direct but rather indirect, as it is mediated by its influence on social support and deliberate rumination. The study underscores the significance of examining particular characteristics of social support networks and suggests integrating additional variables for future research, such as gender, types of traumatic events, and the age of children with disabilities.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to construct and validate a posttraumatic growth structural model for firefighters based on Calhoun and Tedeschi's model (2006). Methods: The research data was collected from 200 firefighters working in Gyeongsang-do, Jeolla-do, and Gyeonggi-do. The participants completed an anonymous survey asking about ego-resilience, active coping, family support, organizational support, self-exposure, deliberate rumination, posstraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth. Results: The model selected as a final model was the one that supports 10 hypotheses out of 13 hypotheses. In the final model, deliberate rumination (β=.59, p<.001) had a significant effect in the posttraumatic growth of firefighters. Active coping, organizational support, self-exposure, ego-resilience and posttraumatic stress had a significant indirect effect. The explanatory power of these variables was 36.0%. Conclusion: The results of the survey show that it is important to develop a strategy to strengthen deliberate rumination. In addition, encouraging deliberate rumination through organizational support and self-exposure can promote posttraumatic growth of firefighters.

In this study we investigated the structural relationship between the Big Five personality traits which is a pretrauma characteristic, posttraumatic cognition, rumination, posttraumatic growth(PTG), and posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) symptoms. The participants were 1,000 adults who experienced traumatic event. For statistical analysis we set the research model with the Big Five personality traits affecting deliberate rumination through posttraumatic cognition and intrusive rumination. Competing model was set without the path from intrusive rumination to deliberate rumination. The results indicated that rumination and posttraumatic cognition did not mediate the relationship between extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and PTG, PTSD symptoms. Second, there was a mediating effect of intrusive rumination between openness to experience and PTSD symptoms. Moreover, the pathway to intrusive rumination, deliberate rumination, and PTG from openness to experience was also significant. Third, the pathway to posttraumatic cognition, event-related rumination, and both PTSD symptoms and PTG from neuroticism was significant. These results support the cognitive process of PTG model In the end we discussed the implication and limitations of the study.
Purpose: This study aimed to develop and test a model for posttraumatic growth among cured patients with COVID-19. This model was based on Calhoun and Tedeschi's Posttraumatic Growth model and a literature review. Methods: The participants comprised 223 patients cured from COVID-19 who were ≥ 19 years of age. The data were collected through an online questionnaire from March 21 to 24, 2022. The assessment tools included the Impact of Event Scale: Revised Korean version, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Distress Disclosure Index, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Korean version of the Event-related Rumination Inventory, and the Korean version of the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory. Data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS version 24.0 and IBM AMOS 26.0. Results: The modified model showed appropriate goodness of fit (χ2 = 369.90, χ2 /degree of freedom = 2.09, SRMR = .09, RMESA = .07, CFI = .94, TLI = .93). The post-traumatic growth of cured patients with COVID-19 was explained through distress perception, self-disclosure, and deliberate rumination, with the explanatory power being 70.0%. Conclusion: This study suggests preparing a disaster psychology program involving experts who can activate deliberate rumination is necessary. Further, this study may serve as basic data for developing a program to enhance the post-traumatic growth of patients cured from COVID-19.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explain a structural model of posttraumatic growth among psychiatric nurses based on existing models and a literature review and verify its effectiveness. Methods: Data were collected from psychiatric nurses in one special city, four metropolitan cities, and three regional cities from February to March 2016. Exogenous variables included hardiness and distress perception, while endogenous variables included self-disclosure, social support, deliberate rumination, and posttraumatic growth. Data from 489 psychiatric nurses were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0 and AMOS 20.0. Results: The modified model was a good fit for the data. Tests on significance of the pathways of the modified model showed that nine of the 14 paths were supported, and the explanatory power of posttraumatic growth by included variables in the model was 69.2%. For posttraumatic growth among psychiatric nurses, deliberate rumination had a direct effect as the variable that had the largest influence. Indirect effects were found in the order of hardiness, social support, and distress perception. Self-disclosure showed both direct and indirect effects. Conclusion: A strategy to improve deliberate rumination is necessary when seeking to improve posttraumatic growth among psychiatric nurses. Enhancing psychiatric nurses' hardiness before trauma would enable them to actively express negative emotions after trauma, allowing them to receive more social support. This would improve deliberate rumination and consequently help promote psychological growth among psychiatric nurses who have experienced trauma.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the perception of the somatic symptoms and the cognitive emotion regulation strategies in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Methods : A total of 48 patients meeting DSM-5 criteria for PTSD and 48 normal controls were recruited for participation in this study. We evaluated subjects using Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS), Somato-Sensory Amplification Scale (SSAS), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A) and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). We analyzed data using an independent t-test and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results : In terms of SSAS, PTSD patients presented higher average SSAS scores than normal controls but the result is not statistically significant. In PTSD patients, the severity of PTSD is significantly correlated with CERQ-rumination and CERQ-catastrophizing. The SSAS scores of PTSD patients show the significant positive correlation with PTSD hyperarousal symptoms, CERQ-catastrophizing and CERQ-blaming others. Conclusions : These results reveal that patients with PTSD have maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies such as rumination and catastrophizing. Somato-sensory amplification seems to be related with PTSD hyperarousal, CERQ-catastrophizing and CERQ-blaming others. Therefore, reducing somato-sensory amplification, rumination and catastrophizing can be helpful to reduce PTSD symptoms and somatic symptoms in PTSD patients.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy(MBCT) on chronic depressed patients. MBCT has shown great effects for curing depression and proving it can also prevent the relapse of depression. In recent years in Korea, there has been ongoing MBCT research, but has not been applied as a group program to chronic depressed patients. After reviewing the research and organizing data of MBCT treatment therapy mechanism, results found that the chronic depressed patients showed positive effects from the MBCT program. This study involved 8 patients aged 40-55, measuring the level of mindfulness(FFMQ), decentering, rumination, and depression symptoms before and after treatment from the MBCT program. The results indicate that there was a significant increase in FFMQ(mean change score=1.37, p<0.05) and decentering(mean change score=1.00, p<0.05), while there was a significant decrease in rumination(mean change score=-0.67, p<0.05) and BDI(mean change score=-9.5, p<0.05). These results have been continued during the 6 months. The MBCT program has prevented the relapse of depression, acting as a maintenance therapy.

This study was a cross-sectional descriptive investigative study to analyze the effects of sub-factors of cognitive emotional control on life goals. The subjects of the study were 184 people in their 20s, and they were collected online from December 2020 to January 5, 2021 using structured cognitive control capabilities and life goal questionnaires. The collected data were performed using SPSS 18.0 for Frequency, Independent Sample t-test, Pearson correction analysis, Simple regression analysis, and Multiple regression analysis. According to the study, men had both life-oriented and achievement-oriented life goals higher than women. Among the sub-factors of cognitive emotional control (positive focus change, positive reassessment, expansion of view, re-accept plan, acceptance, rumination, self-criticism, others criticism, and destruction) were male and female were higher in self-criticism. Factors affecting life-oriented life goals have been shown to be expanding views, re-accepting plans, and criticizing others, while positive re-evaluation negatively affects achievement-oriented life goals. Based on these results, life-oriented life-goals tend to exhibit adaptive responses to expand views and revise plans and maladaptive responses to blame others, while achievement-oriented life-goals have the ability to positively reassess situations, modify plans and accept negative reactions.
