  • In this study, the relationships between hydraulic conductivity of GCLs and physico-chemical properties of bentonites were assessed. In addition to four factory manufactured GCLs, six artificially prepared GCLs (AP-GCLs) were tested. AP-GCLs were prepared in the laboratory without bonding or stitching. A total of 20 hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted using flexible wall permeameters ten of which were permeated with distilled deionized water (DIW) and the rest were permeated with tap water (TW). The hydraulic conductivity of GCLs and AP-GCLs were between $5.2{\times}10^{-10}cm/s$ and $3.0{\times}10^{-9}cm/s$. The hydraulic conductivities of all GCLs to DIW were very similar to that of GCLs to TW. Then, simple regression analyses were conducted between hydraulic conductivity and physicochemical properties of bentonite. The best correlation coefficient was achieved when hydraulic conductivity was related with clay content (R=0.85). Liquid limit and plasticity index were other independent variables that have good correlation coefficients with hydraulic conductivity (R~0.80). The correlation coefficient with swell index is less than other parameters, but still fairly good (R~0.70). In contrast, hydraulic conductivity had poor correlation coefficients with specific surface area (SSA), smectite content and cation exchange capacity (CEC) (i.e., R < 0.5). Furthermore, some post-test properties of bentonite such as final height and final water content were correlated with the hydraulic conductivity as well. The hydraulic conductivity of GCLs had fairly good correlation coefficients with either final height or final water content. However, those of AP-GCLs had poor correlations with these variables on account of fiber free characteristics.

  • In this work, we have fabricated the amorphous carbon (a-C:H) thin film by using unbalanced magnetron sputtering method with the magnetron source of inside/outside electromagnetic coils as the protective coating materials. We have investigated the tribological properties of amorphous carbon films prepared with various electromagnetic coil currents for the change of the plasma density, such as hardness, friction coefficient, adhesion, and surface roughness. Raman and HRTEM were used to study the microstructure of carbon films. In the result, the hardness and adhesion properties of a-C:H films were improved with increasing electromagnetic coil current due to the increase of the plasma density to the substrate. Thus, these results can be explained by the increase of $sp^2$ bonding and cluster number in the amorphous carbon film, related to the improved bombardment around substrate and the increased substrate temperature.

  • In this study, aluminum nitride (AlN) reinforced aluminum (Al) matrix composites are fabricated via plasma arc melting under a nitrogen atmosphere. Within a minute of the chemical reaction between Al and N, dispersed AlN with the shape of transient and lamellar layers is in situ formed in the Al matrix. The composite contains 10 vol.% AlN reinforcements with low thermal resistance and strong bonding at the interfaces, which leads to the unique combination of thermal expansivity and conductivity in the resulting composites. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the composite can be further reduced when Si was alloyed into the Al matrix, which proposes the potential of the in situ Al matrix composites for thermal management applications.

  • Two kinds of bioactive glass were coated on the Ti6Al4V alloy by the enameling technique. In order to reduce the thermal stress due to the difference in expansion coefficient with the alloy with the secondary coating forming hydroxyapatite, the difference in expansion coefficient between the alloy and the two glasses was adjusted at $2{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ intervals. FE-SEM and EDS analysis showed that good adhesion was formed between the Ti6Al4V alloy and the primary coating by diffusion bonding. After immersion in SBF solution, it was confirmed from FT-IR that hydroxycarbonate apatite formed in the secondary coating was not different from bulk bioactive glass.

  • Integrating dielectric materials into LTCC is a convenient method to increase the integration density in electronic circuits. To enable co-firing of the high-k and low-k dielectric LTCC materials in a multi-material hetero-laminate, the shrinkage characteristics of both materials should be similar. Moreover, thermal expansion mismatch between materials during co-firing should be minimized. The alternating stacking of an LTCC with silica filler and that with calcium-zirconate filler was observed to examine the use of the same glass in different LTCCs to minimize the difference in shrinkage and thermal expansion coefficient. For the LTCC of silica filler with a low dielectric constant and that of calcium zirconate filler with a high dielectric constant, the amount of shrinkage was examined through a thermomechanical analysis, and the predicted appropriate fraction of each filler was applied to green sheets by tape casting. The green sheets of different fillers were alternatingly laminated to the thickness of 500 ㎛. As a result of examining the junction, it was observed through SEM that a complete bonding was achieved by constrained sintering in the structure of 'calcium zirconate 50 vol%-silica 30 vol%-calcium zirconate 50 vol%'.

  • Plasma immersion ion beam deposition (PIIBD) technique is a cost-effective process for the deposition of diamond like carbon thin film, the possible solid lubricant on large surface and a complex shape. We used PIIB process for the preparation of DLC thin film on $Al_2O_3$ with deposition conditions of deposition temperature range $200^{\circ}C$, working gas pressure of 1.310-1Pa. DLC thin films were coated by $C_2H_2$ ion beam deposition on $Al_2O_3$ after the ion bombardment of SiH4 as the bonding layer. Energetic bombardment of $C_2H_2$ ions during the DLC deposition to ceramic materials generated mixed layers at the DLC-Si interface which enhanced the interface to be highly bonded. Wear test showed that the low coefficient of friction of around 0.05 with normal load 2.9N and proved the advantage of the low energy ion bombardment in PIIBD process which improved the tribological properties of DLC thin film coated alumina ceramic. Furthermore, PIIBD was recognized as a useful surface modification technique for the deposition of DLC thin film on the irregular shape components, such as molds, and for the improvement of wear and adhesion problems of the DLC thin film, high temperature solid lubricant.

  • Nanostructured pure a-C and nitrogen doped a-C: N thin films with small particle size of, ~50 nm were obtained by Aerosol-assisted CVD method from the natural precursor camphor oil. Five samples were prepared for the a-C and a-C: N respectively, with the deposition temperatures ranging from $400^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. At high temperature, the AFM clarifies an even smoother image, due to the increase of the energetic carbon ion bombardment at the surface of the thin film. An ohmic contact was acquired from the current-voltage solar simulator characterization. The higher conductivity of a-C: N, of ${\sim}{\times}10^{-2}Scm^{-1}$ is due to the decrease in defects since the spin density gap decrease with the nitrogen addition. Pure a-C exhibit absorption coefficient, ${\alpha}$ of $10^4cm^{-1}$, whereas for a-C:N, ${\alpha}$ is of $10^5cm^{-1}$. The high ${\sigma}$ value of a-C:N is due to the presence of more graphitic component ($sp^2$ carbon bonding) in the carbon films.

  • Large drill bits may face high hardness ore and high working pressure when working. To optimize the use effect of large drill bits and prolong the use time, it is necessary to add a layer of pressure-resistant, wear-resistant, and low-friction coating on the surface of the drill bit. In this study, CoCrNiAlTi high-entropy alloy coatings and CoCrNiAlTi (70 wt%)-TiC (30 wt%) composite coatings are successfully prepared on Q235 steel by plasma spraying. The CoCrNiAlTi (70 wt%)-TiC (30 wt%) coating consists of FCC solid solution and a small amount of TiC phase. The effect of TiC on the composition phase, microhardness, and elastic modulus of HEA coating is studied by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and microhardness tester. The effect of TiC on the friction and wear properties of HEA coatings is investigated using a wear tester. By improving the process parameters, the metallurgical bonding between the coating and the substrate is well combined, and a coating without pores and cracks is obtained. The experimental results confirm that the microhardness, elastic modulus, and wear resistance of CoCrNiAlTi-TiC composite coating are better, and the friction coefficient is lower.

  • We studied the optical characteristics correlated with low dielectric constants of low-k SiOCH thin films through ellipsometry. The low-k SiOCH thin films were prepared by CCP-PECVD method using BTMSM(Bis-trimethylsilylmethane) precursors deposited on p-Si wafer. The Si-O-CHx, Si-O-Si, Si-CHx, CHx and Si-H bonding groups were specified by FTIR spectroscopic spectra, and the groups coupled with the nano-porous structural organic/inorganic hybrid-type of SiOCH thin films which has extremely low dielectric constant close to 2.0. The structural groups includes highly dense pore as well as ions in SiOCH thin films affecting to complex refraction characteristics of single layer on the p-Si wafer. The structural complexity originate the complex refractive constants of the films, and resulted the elliptical polarization of the incident linearly polarized light source of Xe-light source in the range from 190 nm to 2100 nm. Phase difference and amplitude ratio between s wave and p wave propagating through SiOCH thin film was studied. After annealing, the amplitude of p wave was reduced more than s wave, and phase difference between p and s wave was also reduced.

  • The Molybedenium thin film is generally used on back contact material of CIGS solar cell due to low electrical resistivity and stable thermal expansion coefficient. The Mo thin films deposited on si wafer by the magnetron sputtering method. The research focused on the variation of electrical resistivity of films which deposited with various working pressure at the target power of 2.0 kW(8.4 W/). The lowest resistivity of Mo thin film showed $9.0{\mu}O$-cm at pressure of 1.5 mTorr. However, working pressure increasing up to 50 mTorr, resistivities were highly increased. The results showed that the conductivity of Mo films depended on growing structures and defects in deposition process. Surface morphology, porosity, grain size, oxidation, and bonding structures were analysed by SEM, AFM, spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), XRD, and XPS.
