Internet Video Coding (IVC) is a royalty-free codec currently being developed in MPEG. Coding efficiency of IVC codec has been steadily enhanced and it was reported that the performance of Committee Draft (CD) version is comparable to H.264/AVC High Profile (HP) in terms of objective and subjective qualities. In this paper, we present some coding tools that have been proposed for enhancing the coding efficiency of IVC during the developing process in MPEG along with brief overview of IVC codec architecture and coding algorithms. The coding tools include both of normative tools and informative tools such as non-reference P frame coding, DC mode intra prediction, Lagrange multiplier selection, and extension of chroma intra prediction modes. Improvement obtained by each tool is presented in terms of algorithm and coding gain based on the experiments. As a result of the experiment, the coding tools give the average bit saving of 8.8%, 0.4%, 0.4%, and 0.0%, respectively, in the low-delay coding mode.

Vector quantization with two-channel conjugate codebook has been researched as an efficient coding technique that can reduce the computational complexity and codebook storage. This paper proposes FSVQ using two-channel conjugate codebook in order to reduce the number of state codebooks. Input vector in the two-channel conjugate FSVQ is coded with state codebook of a seperated state according to each codebook. In addition, LOT is adopted to obtain to obtain a high coding gain and to reduce blocking effect which appears in the block coding. As a result, although FSVQ can achieve higher data compression ratio than general vector quantization, it has a disadvantage of having a very large number of state codebooks. However FSVQ with two-channel conjugate codebooks can employ a significantly reduced number of state codebooks, even though it has a small loss in the PSNR compared with the conventional FSVQ using one codebook. Moreover FSVQ in the LOT domain can reduce blocking effect and high coding gain compared with FSVQ in the spatial domain.

From the perspective of reducing the sampling cost of color images at high resolution, block-based compressive sensing (CS) has attracted considerable attention as a promising alternative to conventional Nyquist/Shannon sampling. On the other hand, for storing/transmitting applications, CS requires a very efficient way of representing the measurement data in terms of data volume. This paper addresses this problem by developing a measurement-coding method with the proposed customized Huffman coding. In addition, by noting the difference in visual importance between the luma and chroma channels, this paper proposes measurement coding in YCbCr space rather than in conventional RGB color space for better rate allocation. Furthermore, as the proper use of the image property in pursuing smoothness improves the CS recovery, this paper proposes the integration of a low pass filter to the CS recovery of color images, which is the block-based ${\ell}_{20}$-norm minimization. The proposed coding scheme shows considerable gain compared to conventional measurement coding.

We propose a Z-HBT line coding for a LED-ID system. Z-HBT line coding is defined as follows. First, we apply half bit transition to one bit. Second, we decode encoded bits using difference of bit transition level in one bit duration. As a result, we obtain advantages about synchronization problem and noise effect mitigation at the receiver. We set up outdoor the LED-ID simulation environment. At simulation results, we show 2-3dB gain as compared with existing line coding schemes. The results of the paper can be applied to design and implementation of LED-ID systems for indoor wireless multimedia services.

In this paper, employing the 3-dimensional discrete cosine transform (DCT) for the utilization of the temporal correlation, an adaptive motion sequence coding technique is proposed. The energy distribution in a 3-D DCT block, due to the nonstationary nature of the image data, varies along the veritical, horizontal and temporal directions. Thus, aiming an adaptive system to local variations, adaptive procedures, such as the 3-D classification, the classified linear scanning technique and the VLC table selection scheme, have been implemented in our approach. Also, a hybrid structure which adaptively combines inter-frame coding is presented, and it is found that the adaptive hybrid frame coding technique shows a significant performance gain for a moving sequence which contains a relatively small moving area. Through an intensive computer simulation, it is demonstrated that, the performance of the proposed 3-D transform coding technique shows a close relation with the temporal variation of the sequence to be code. And the proposed technique has the advantages of skipping the computationally complex motion compensation procedure and improving the performance over the 2-D motion compensated transform coding technique for rates in the range of 0.5 ~ 1.0 bpp.
In this work, we study the performance of a serial concatenated scheme comprising a convolutional code (CC) and an orthogonal space-time block code (STBC) separated by an inter-leaver. Specifically, we derive performance bounds for this concatenated scheme, clearly quantify the impact of using a CC in conjunction with a STBC, and compare that to using a STBC code only. Furthermore, we examine the impact of performing antenna selection at the receiver on the diversity order and coding gain of the system. In performing antenna selection, we adopt a selection criterion that is based on maximizing the instantaneous signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) at the receiver. That is, we select a subset of the available receive antennas that maximizes the received SNR. Two channel models are considered in this study: Fast fading and quasi-static fading. For both cases, our analyses show that substantial coding gains can be achieved, which is confirmed through Monte-Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that the spatial diversity is maintained for all cases, whereas the coding gain deteriorates by no more than $10\;log_{10}$ (M / L) dB, all relative to the full complexity multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive trellis-coded Multiple Quadrature Amplitude Modulation(ATCMQAM) applying MQAM as the modulation scheme in the conventional ATCMPSK (Adaptive trellis-Coded Multiple Phase Shift Keying) for slowly varying Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed system adaptively controls the coding rate combined with modulation level of pragmatic approach to trellis-coded modulation according to the instantaneous fading channel conditions, and employs MQAM as modulation scheme. Results by computer simulation show that the proposed adaptive model using MQAM can realize higher quality transmission with the improvement more than 0.5 ~ 1bit in average bit rate. And there is a coding gain of 2-5dB, depending on the high SNR value, compared with the conventional adaptive model employing MPSK.

This paper investigates the error performance of the amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems in the context of full-duplex (FD) communication. In addition to the inherent self-interference (SI) due to simultaneous transmission and reception, coexistent FD terminals may cause crosstalk. In this paper, we utilize the information exchange via the crosstalk channel to construct a particular distributed space-time code (DSTC). The residual SI is also considered. Closed-form pairwise error probability (PEP) is first derived. Then we obtain the upper bound of PEP in high transmit power region to provide more insights of diversity and coding gain. The proposed DSTC scheme can attain full cooperative diversity if the variance of SI is not a function of the transmit power. The coding gain can be improved by lengthening the frame and proper power control. Feasibility and efficiency of the proposed DSTC are verified in numerical simulations.
The growing interest towards ultra-wideband (UWB) communications stems from its unique features such as baseband operation, ample multipath diversity, and the potential of enhanced user capacity. But since UWB has to overlay existing narrowband systems, multiple access has to be achieved in the presence of narrowband interference (NBI). However, existing baseband spreading codes for UWB multiple access are not flexible in handling NBI. In this paper, we introduce two novel spreading codes that not only enable baseband UWB multiple access, but also facilitate flexible NBI cancellation. We construct our codes using a single carrier or multiple carriers (SC or MC), which can be implemented with standard discrete-cosine transform (DCT) circuits. With our SC/MC codes, NBI can be avoided by simply nulling undesired digital carriers. Being digital, these SC/MC codes give rise to multiband UWB systems, without invoking analog carriers. In addition, our SC/MC codes enable full multipath diversity, and maximum coding gains. Equally attractive is their capability to reduce the number of interfering users, with simple matched filter operations. Comprehensive simulations are also carried out to corroborate our analysis.

Two cases of block coded phase/frequncy modulations are investigated. minimum Euclidean distances are calculated as the function of modulation index h and rotation angle \ulcorner in the cases of 2-FSK/4-PSK and 2-FSK/8-PSK. Method of signal set partitioning is described, especially for the case of 2-FSK/8-PSK. The results are compared with S.I. Sayegh's work and shown better performance. For example, with simple parity check and repetition codes, we can get coding gain of 3 dB in the case of 2-FSK/4-PSK with block length n=4. We get 5.33 dB in the case of 2-FSK/8-PSK with n=4. And it is believed that we can get higher coding gain with proper combinations of block code and n-FSK/m-PSK type channel signal constellations.
