Most video coding systems use YCbCr color space for their inputs, but RGB space is more preferred in the field of high fidelity video because the compression gain from YCbCr becomes disappeared in the high quality operation region. In order to improve the coding performance of RGB video signal, this paper presents an adaptive frequency-selective weighted prediction algorithm. Based on the sign agreement and the strength of frequency-domain correlation of residual color planes, the proposed scheme adaptively selects the frequency elements as well as the corresponding prediction weights for better utilization of inter-plane correlation of RGB signal. Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm improves the coding gain of around 13% bitrate reduction, on average, compared to the common mode of 4:4:4 video coding in the state-of-the-art video compression standard, H.264/AVC.

Since prediction processes such as motion estimation motion compensation are not at the WZ video encoder but at its decoder, WZ video compression cannot have better performance than that of conventional video encoder. In order to implement the prediction process with low complexity at the encoder, WZ residual coding was proposed. Instead of original WZ frames, WZ residual coding encodes the residual signal between key frames and WZ frames. Although the proposed WZ residual coding has good performance in pixel domain, it does not have any improvements in transform domain compared to transform domain WZ coding. The WZ residual coding in transform domain is difficult to have better performance, because pre-defined quantization matrices in WZ coding are not compatible with WZ residual coding. In this paper, we propose a new quantization method modifying quantization matrix and quantization step size adaptively for transform domain WZ residual coding. Experimental result shows 22% gain in BDBR and 1.2dB gain in BDPSNR.

This paper presents an adaptive data compression algorithm for video data. The coling complexity due to the high correlation in the given data sequence is alleviated by coding the difference data, sequence rather than the data sequence itself. The adaptation to the nonstationary statistics of the data is confined within a code set, which consists of two constant length cades and six modified Shannon.Fano codes. lt is assumed that the probability distributions of tile difference data sequence and of the data entropy are Laplacian and Gaussion, respectively. The adaptive coding performance is compared for two code selection criteria: entropy and $P_r$[difference value=0]=$P_0$. It is shown that data compression ratio 2 : 1 is achievable with the adaptive coding. The gain by the adaptive coding over the fixed coding is shown to be about 10% in compression ratio and 15% in code efficiency. In addition, $P_0$ is found to he not only a convenient criterion for code selection, but also such efficient a parameter as to perform almost like entropy.

This paper proposes a simplified DC calculation method for simplified depth coding (SDC) mode of 3D High Efficiency Video Coding (3D-HEVC) to reduce the computational complexity. For the computational complexity reduction, the current reference software of 3D-HEVC employs reference samples sub-sampling method. However, accumulation, branch, and division operations are still utilized and these operations increase computational complexity. The proposed method calculates DC value without those operations. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves 0.1% coding gain for synthesized views in common test condition (CTC) with the significantly reduced number of computing operations.

A scalable video coding (SVC) extension to the H.264/AVC standard has been developed by the Joint Video Team (JVT). SVC provides spatial, temporal and quality scalability with high coding efficiency and low complexity. SVC is now developing the extension of the first version including color format scalability. The paper proposes to remove some luminance related header and luminance coefficients when an enhancement layer adds only additional color information to its lower layer. Experimental results shows 0.6 dB PSNR gain on average in coding efficiency compared with an approach using the existing SVC standard.

Delivery of high quality video over a wide area network with large number of users poses great challenges for the video communication system. To ensure video quality, multiple descriptions have recently attracted various attention as a way of encoding and visual information delivery over wireless network. We propose a new efficient multiple description coding (MDC) technique. Quincunx lattice sub-sampling is used for generating multiple descriptions of an image. In this paper, we propose the application of a directional discrete cosine transform (DCT) to a sub-sampled quincunx lattice to create an MDC representation. On the decoder side, the image is decoded from the received side information. If all the descriptions arrive successfully, the image is reconstructed by combining the descriptions. However, if only one side description is received, decoding is executed using an interpolation process. The experimental results show that such the directional DCT can achieve a better coding gain as well as energy packing efficiency than the conventional DCT with re-alignment.
Even after the standardization of VVC completed in 2020, continuing efforts for developing even better video coding technology are still under way. In this context, the Joint Video Experts Group (JVET) is developing various video compression technologies under the name of enhanced compression beyond VVC capability which has reported BDBR gain of -6.75%, -14.05%, and -15.25% on its test model, ECM version 5.0, respectively in Y, Cb, and Cr channels by just having a few new or improved intra coding tools. The current activity has so far adopted 11 intra coding tools beyond VVC which can generate more sophisticated predictors, reduce signaling overhead, or combine various predictors. In this tutorial paper, we will review these techniques.

Network coding is that the nodes can combine and mix the packets rather than merely forward them. Therefore, network coding is expected to improve throughput and channel efficiency in the wireless network. Relevant researches have been carried out to adapt network coding to wireless multi-hop network. In this paper, we designed the network coding for bidirectional traffic service in routing layer and IP layer of Ad-hoc network. From the simulation result, the traffic load and the end to end distance effect the performance of the network coding. As end to end distance and the traffic load become larger, the gain of network coding become more increased.

Network Coding (NC) is a new paradigm for network communication. In network coding, intermediate nodes create new packets by algebraically combining ingress packets and send it to its neighbor node by broadcast manner. NC has rapidly emerged as a major research area in information theory due to its wide applicability to communication through real networks. Network coding is expected to improve throughput and channel efficiency in the wireless multi-hop network. Many researches have been carried out to employ network coding to wireless ad-hoc network. In this paper, we proposed a dynamic queue management to improve coding opportunistic to enhance efficiency of NC. In our design, intermediate nodes are buffering incoming packets to encode queue. We expect that the proposed algorithm shall improve encoding rate of network coded packet and also reduce end to end latency. From the simulation, the proposed algorithm achieved better performance in terms of coding gain and packet delivery rate than static queue management scheme.

Distributed video coding (DVC) is a new coding paradigm that enables to exploit the statistics among sources only in decoder and to achieve extremely low complex video encoding without any loss of coding efficiency. Wyner-Ziv coding, a particular implementation of DVC, reconstructs video by correcting noise on side information using channel code. Since a good quality of side information brings less noise to be removed by the channel code, generation of good side information is very important for the overall coding efficiency. However, if there are complex motions among frames, it is very hard to generate a good quality of side information without any information of original frame. In this paper, we propose a method to enhance the quality of the side information using small amount of additional information of original frame in the form of hash. By decoder's informing encoder where the hash has to be transmitted, side information can be improved enormously with only small amount of hash data. Therefore, the proposed method gains considerable coding efficiency. Results of our experiment have verified average PSNR gain up to 1 dB, when compared to the well-known DVC codec, known as DISCOVER codec.
