  • In this study, discourse patterns of four peer small groups in learning science concepts were examined. Verbal interactions during small group discussions were audio- and video-taped, transcribed, and analyzed. Three coding frameworks for the levels of turns, interaction units, and episodes were developed. In the analyses of turns, no clear relationships between students' prior achievements and contributions to knowledge building processes were found. Partly participating modes and symmetrical interaction modes were dominant in the analyses of interaction units to suggest that some students did not participate actively in small group discussions and that students' verbal interactions were superficial. The analyses of episodes also indicated that agreeing and/or partial elaborating on group members' ideas were the most frequent patterns and dialectical exchanges were rare in small group discussion.

  • Aspect-Oriented Software Development(AOSD) is the software development methodology that classifies concerns of the system and identifies crosscutting concerns and organizes aspect class, and AOSD has emerged as an important user-oriented software development methodology with high maintainability. However, most of related studies worked on identification and specification and coding of crosscutting concerns. And there have been few studies on slicing technique for tracing method of specified crosscutting concerns. Therefore, this paper proposes slicing technique based on AOSD that identifies and specifies crosscutting concerns through interactive analysis between use cases; also, suggests slicing technique which improves traceability centering on identified crosscutting concerns; applies the aspect-oriented slicing technique to Learning Management System(LMS) for case-study. LMS is a cyber educational system that demands a lot of functional changes and expansion, so it is effective to apply AOSD with high maintainability in developing LMS; and shows the results that compared with related studies by comparing six elements.

  • In the future society where ICT-based digital convergence creates new value, collaborative skills among experts in various fields and SW based problem solving ability is more emphasized. Non-SW specialists are required to have SW based communication skills to effectively collaborate with SW experts to solve their problems. Therefore, SW programming curriculum for non-major college students should be different from the existing programming education for SW-majors aiming at a high level of coding ability. It is also known that diagram-based visual representation is helpful for productive communication and collaboration. In this study, we defined the SW education objectives for the non-majors as cultivating the visual programming ability for SW based problem solving. In order to accomplish this, we explored SW programming curriculum and content development model for non-majors focusing on visual representation of SW solutions. The results of this paper will help to provide appropriate SW learning model for non-majors and to cultivate practical SW capabilities.

  • This paper described the recognition of the Off-line handwritten Hangul based on neural network using a feature extraction method. Features of Hangul can be extracted by a $5{\times}5$ window method which is the modified $3{\times}3$ mask method. These features are coded to binary patterns in order to use neural network's inputs efficiently. Hangul character is recognized by the consonant, the vertical vowel, and the horizontal vowel, separately. In order to verify the recognition rate, three different coding methods were used for neural networks. Three methods were the fixed-code method, the learned-code I method, and the learned-code II method. The result was shown that the learned-code II method was the best among three methods. The result of the learned-code II method was shown 100% recognition rate for the vertical vowel, 100% for the horizontal vowel, and 98.33% for the learned consonants and 93.75% for the new consonants.

  • When up-scaling algorithms for visible light images are applied to infrared (IR) images, they rarely work because IR images are usually blurred. In order to solve such a problem, this paper proposes an up-scaling algorithm for IR images. We employ adaptive dynamic range encoding (ADRC) as a simple classifier based on the observation that IR images have weak details. Also, since human visual systems are more sensitive to edges, our algorithm focuses on edges. Then, we add pre-processing in learning phase. As a result, we can improve visibility of IR images without increasing computational cost. Comparing with Anchored neighborhood regression (A+), the proposed algorithm provides better results. In terms of just noticeable blur, the proposed algorithm shows higher values by 0.0201 than the A+, respectively.

  • An adaptive speech streaming method to improve the perceived speech quality of a software-based multipoint control unit (SW-based MCU) over IP networks is proposed. First, the proposed method predicts whether the speech packet to be transmitted is lost. To this end, the proposed method learns the pattern of packet losses in the IP network, and then predicts the loss of the packet to be transmitted over that IP network. The proposed method classifies the speech signal into different classes of silence, unvoiced, speech onset, or voiced frame. Based on the results of packet loss prediction and speech classification, the proposed method determines the proper amount and bitrate of redundant speech data (RSD) that are sent with primary speech data (PSD) in order to assist the speech decoder to restore the speech signals of lost packets. Specifically, when a packet is predicted to be lost, the amount and bitrate of the RSD must be increased through a reduction in the bitrate of the PSD. The effectiveness of the proposed method for learning the packet loss pattern and assigning a different speech coding rate is then demonstrated using a support vector machine and adaptive multirate-narrowband, respectively. The results show that as compared with conventional methods that restore lost speech signals, the proposed method remarkably improves the perceived speech quality of an SW-based MCU under various packet loss conditions in an IP network.
