Development of a diagnostic coronagraph on the ISS: CODEX progress report

  • The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been developing a diagnostic coronagraph to be deployed in 2023 on the International Space Station (ISS) in collaboration with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The mission is known as "Coronal Diagnostic Experiment (CODEX)", which is designed to obtain simultaneous measurements of the electron density, temperature, and velocity using multiple filters in the 2.5-10 Rs range. The coronagraph will be installed and operated on the ISS to understand the physical conditions in the solar wind acceleration region, and to enable and validate the next generation space weather models. In this presentation, we will introduce recent progress and future plan.

  • In the recent version of the Korea Pharmacopoeia(KP) and the Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia(KHP), there are 563 items(181 in KP, 381 in KHP) of herbal medicines including finished drugs. Also, approximately 507 items including herbal extracts and herbal medicinal products was published in the 3th edition of Korea Pharmaceutical Codex (KPC). These items help the persons working in the pharmaceutical manufacturing field to register the drug and in research fields to develop the new drug considering as a standard specifications. This study was carried out to establish standard analytical methods for 'Compound Hawthorn Berry 60% Ethanol Extract, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract and Garlic Oil Capsules' in the 3th edition of Korea Pharmaceutical Codex. Ginkgo flavonoid and terpene lactone were employed as reference compounds for analytical method. Analytical methods established in this study could be applied to a reasonable and unified quality control of G. biloba leaf extract and hawthorn berry extract.

Heavy Metal Contents of Fish Collected from the Korean Coast of the East Sea (Donghae) (동해 연안산 어류 중의 유해 중금속 함량)

  • This study determined the heavy metal contents in fish from the Korean coast of the East Sea (Donghae). The sample were divided into three parts (meat, liver, skin) and digested with acids. Then, contents of lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The heavy metal contents in different parts of the fish were as follows: lead of 0.019-0.346 mg/kg (meat), 0.461-0.516 mg/kg (liver), 0.018-0.855 mg/kg (skin); cadmium of ${\leq}0.049\;mg/kg$ (meat), ${\leq}1.224\;mg/kg$ (liver), ${\leq}0.019\;mg/kg$ (skin); mercury of $1.018-2.751\;{\mu}g/kg$ (meat), $3.057-7.023\;{\mu}g/kg$ (liver), $1.068-3.940\;{\mu}g/kg$ (skin); arsenic of $0.938-25.935\;{\mu}g/kg$ (meat), ${\leq}21.082\;{\mu}g/kg$ (liver), ${\leq}3.708\;{\mu}g/kg$ (skin). Contents of heavy metals in the liver and skin from some fish exceeded the maximum CODEX guideline levels, although the contents in meat from all of the fish tested were much lower than the CODEX levels.

Analysis of Quality Characteristics of Traditional and Commercial Red Pepper Pastes (Gochujang) (전통 고추장과 개량 고추장의 품질특성)

  • Purpose: This study investigated the quality characteristics of traditional and commercial red pepper pastes (Gochujang) for development of traditional red pepper pastes. Methods: Proximate compositions, amino acid nitrogen contents, salt contents, color, viable bacteria, and inorganic substance contents of 19 traditional and three commercial Gochujang were investigated. Results: Analysis of proximate compositions showed huge differences between the samples. For moisture content, six kinds of traditional Gochujang did not meet the standard of the food codex. Contents of moisture, fat, and protein were significantly higher in traditional than commercial Gochujang. However, carbohydrate content was higher in commercial than traditional Gochujang, and thus calories were also higher. The amino nitrogen contents of the three kinds of traditional Gochujang did not meet the standard of the food codex. Salt contents and color were not significantly different between traditional and commercial Gochujang. In the microbiological analysis, total bacteria counts were higher in traditional than commercial Gochujang. The number of B. cereus did not exceed the standard of the food codex in all samples. S. aureus and fungi were not detected in any samples. In the inorganic substance analysis, inorganic substances contents in Gochujang were in the order of Na, K, Mg, and Ca. Overall, Na, K, Mg, and Ca were more abundant in traditional than commercial Gochujang. However, due to wide variations in inorganic substance contents of traditional Gochujang, there were no significant differences between traditional and commercial Gochujang. Conclusion: For the development of traditional Gochujang, quality standardization is considered necessary.

Study for Residue Analysis of Fluxametamid in Agricultural Commodities

  • BACKGROUND: Accurate and simple analytical method determining Fluxametamid residue was necessary in various food matrices. Additionally, fulfilment of the international guideline of Codex (Codex Alimentarius Commission CAC/GL 40) was required for the analytical method. In this study, we developed Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method to determine the Fluxametamid residue in foods. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fluxametamid was extracted with acetonitrile, partitioned and concentrated with dichloromethane. To remove the interferences, silica SPE cartridge was used before LC-MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry) analysis with $C_{18}$ column. Five agricultural commodities (mandarin, potato, soybean, hulled rice, and red pepper) were used as a group representative to verify the method. The liner matrix-matched calibration curves were confirmed with coefficient of determination ($r^2$) greater than 0.99 at calibration range of 0.001-0.25 mg/kg. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.001 and 0.005 mg/kg, respectively. Mean average accuracies were shown to be 82.24-115.27%. The precision was also shown to be less than 10% for all five samples. CONCLUSION: The method investigated in this study was suitable to the Codex guideline for the residue analysis. Thus, this method can be useful for determining the residue in various food matrices as routine analysis.

Development of alternative assay method without hazardous reagent, carbon tetrachloride, for cefroxadine capsules in Korean Pharmaceutical Codex (세프록사딘 캡슐 시험에 사용되는 유해시약인 사염화탄소 대체 공정시험법 개발)

  • Currently oxidation-reduction titration method for the assay method using the hazardous reagent, carbon tetrachloride, for cefroxadine capsules has been used in Korean Pharmaceutical Codex. We developed and validated an alternative HPLC assay method by substituting the use of the hazardous reagent, carbon tetrachloride, to the use of less toxic ones like acetonitrile. The linearity of the calibration curves in the desired concentration range was good ($r^2$ > 0.999). Relative standard deviations of intra-day precision were ranged between 0.30% and 0.69% and inter-day precision were ranged between 0.47% and 0.82%. Accuracy was obtained with recoveries in range of 100.20% and 100.56%. Developed method was applied to the determination of cefroxadine in commercial cefroxadine capsule and could be expected to become valuable tools for revising the Korean Pharmaceutical Codex.

Change in Storage Quality of Acasia and Buckwheat Honeys (아카시아꿀과 메밀꿀의 저장중 품질특성의 변화)

  • Two kinds of honey, acacia and buckwheat, supplied by the producer have been stored at $5^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C,\;and\;35^{\circ}C$ for one year to study storage qualities. Titratable acidity of the honey-increased with time specially at the elevated temperatures: the acidity of bukwheat increased 1.7 times at the end of storage at $35^{\circ}C$. Viscosity decreased with time and elevated temperatures. Viscosity of acacia honey at $35^{\circ}C$ was 1/12 the value at $5^{\circ}C$ and that of buckwheat was 1/3. Hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF) content increased slowly with time at $20^{\circ}C$, whereas. fast increase was observed at $35^{\circ}C$. HMF content of acacia honey after four months of storage exceeded the HMF limit of Codex, 40mg/kg. Buckwheat honey showed the same level after six months. It was noticeable fact that HMF content decreased significantly with time at $5^{\circ}C$. Diastase activity decreased with time and elevated temperature, and that of acacia honey was below 8 which is the Codex limit after six months of storage at $35^{\circ}C$. Buckwheat honey showed the same level of the activity after eight months. Fructose and glucose content decreased significantly with increased temperature. The ratio of fructose to glucose increased with temperature and maltose was detected in the sample stored at $35^{\circ}C$.
