  • This paper presents the application of a turbo coding technique combined with a bandwidth efficient method known as trellis-coded modulation. A transformation applied to the incoming I-channel and Q-channel symbols allows the use of an off-the-shelf binary/quadrature phase shift keying (B/QPSK) turbo decoder without any modifications. A conventional turbo decoder then operates on transformed symbols to estimate the coded bits. The uncoded bits are decoded based on the estimated coded bits and locations of the received symbols.

  • Concrete beams reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars exhibit large deflection and crack width as compared to concrete beams reinforced steel due to modulus of elasticity of FRP bars. Current design code for prediction and crack width developed in concrete structures reinforced with steel bars may not be used for concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars. Thus a number of researcher have attempted to propose modifications to the ACI 318 empirical equation for estimating the effective moment of inertia of reinforced concrete beams. Others used numerical method to calculate the deflection. The purpose of this paper is to evaluation of methods of ACI 440.1 R-01, ISIS Canada design manual, and others for predicting deflection for glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforced concrete beams.

  • Periodontitis is a common oral disease that is characterized by infection and inflammation of the tooth supporting tissues. While its incidence is highly associated with outgrowth of the pathogenic microbiome, some patients show signs of predisposition and quickly fall into recurrence after treatment. Recent research using genetic associations of candidates as well as genome-wide analysis highlights that variations in genes related to the inflammatory response are associated with an increased risk of periodontitis. Intriguingly, some of the genes are regulated by epigenetic modifications, supposedly established and reprogrammed in response to environmental stimuli. In addition, the treatment with epigenetic drugs improves treatment of periodontitis in a mouse model. In this review, we highlight some of the recent progress identifying genetic factors associated with periodontitis and point to promising approaches in epigenetic research that may contribute to the understanding of molecular mechanisms involving different responses in individuals and the early detection of predispositions that may guide in future oral treatment and disease prevention.

  • This study aims to examine the costumes, which a shaman wears for the ritual of exorcism in the Honam region. The findings are based on a field survey of the exorcism ritual, which is performed by hereditary shamans and forms part of an annual event in the Honam region. Two main features of the shamans' costumes were observed. Firstly, the types of shamanic costume worn for gut reflected the general traditional costume but with some variations. White-colored costumes are largely found in the Honam region. Secondly, the types of costumes, which shamans wear in the Honam region. are also varied. The different types of shamanic costumes, regardless of Ga-sa, can be classified into Jang-sam, Jeon-bok, or Duru-magi, variations in the patterns of costumes, differences in the types of conical hat, and modifications in the dress code.

  • This study was performed on preliminary structural design of a small scale WIG craft which has been developed as a next generation high speed maritime transportation system in Korea. A composite structure design using the foam-sandwich for main wing and tail fins and the honeycomb sandwich and skin-stringer-ring frame for fuselage was applied for weight reduction as well as structural stability. A commercial FEM code, NASTRAN for was utilized to confirm the structural safety for the reiterate design modifications to meet design requirements including the target weight. Each main wing was jointed with the fuselage by eight high strength insert bolts for easy assembling and disassembling as well as for assuring the required 20 years service life. For control surface structural design, the channel type spar, the foam sandwich skin and the lug joint were adopted.

  • KOGAS had developed the Ring-knot membrane for LNG storage tank. But we found that some modifications were needed in using the Ring-knot membrane for the commercial LNG storage tanks. So, both analytical and experimental studies have been performed to investigate the strength of the new membrane and the reaction force at the anchor point. Using nonlinear FEM code and experiments, the stress analysis of the new corrugated membrane shapes subject to the cryogenic liquid pressure and thermal loading are performed to ensure the stability and fatigue strength of the new membrane. This paper reports on the results of investigations into this new type of membrane.

  • We developed the PERUPS system to aid the on-line performance analysis for the turbine cycle of the YongGwang 3 and 4 nuclear power plants. Procedure of measurement validation is included in the performance calculation to obtain heat balance. Precision of on-line performance calculation is increased via practical modifications of standard calculation algorithms based on the PTC (Performance Test Code). The proposed system also provides useful Web-based aids for performance analysis, including performance data management, a graphic viewer for heat balance and turbine expansion lines, and synthesized reports of performance.

  • In this paper, numerical study on a mixed-flow pump for irrigation and drainage has been performed based on three-dimensional viscous flow analysis. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by finite volume approximations and solved by the commercial CFD code ANSYS CFX-11.0. A structured grid system is constructed in the computational domain, which has O-type grids near the blade surfaces and H/J-type grids in other regions. The numerical results were validated with experimental data for the heads and efficiencies at different flow coefficients. The efficiency at the design flow coefficient is evaluated with the variation of two geometric variables related to area of discharge and length of the vane in the diffuser. The results show that efficiency of the mixed-flow pump at the design flow coefficient is improved by the modifications of the geometry.

  • This present study provides the structural design and analysis of main wing, horizontal tail and control surface of a small scale WIG (Wing-in-Ground Effect) craft which has been developed as a future high speed maritime transportation system of Korea. Weight saving as well as structural stability could be achieved by using the skin.spar.foam sandwich and carbon/epoxy composite material. Through sequential design modifications and numerical structural analysis using commercial FEM code PATRAN/NASTRAN, the final design structural features to meet the final design goal such as the system target weight, structural safety and stability were obtained. In addition, joint structures such as insert bolts for joining the wing with the fuselage and lugs for joining the control surface to the wing were designed by considering easy assembling as well as more than 20 years service life.

  • Wind-induced interference effects on a building are the result of one or more adjacent buildings modifying the flow of wind around it, which may result in a significant increase or decrease in wind loads on the building. Wind loading standards and codes of practice offer little guidance to the designer for assessing the effects of interference. Experimental results on interference effects indicate that code recommendations may be significantly low (unsafe) or uneconomically conservative. The paper presents results of an extensive experimental program to study the wind flow mechanisms and to quantify the extent of wind load modifications on buildings due to interference effects. These results have been simplified and presented from the point-of-view of design and codification for the case of two buildings. Based on these results, general guidelines and limiting conditions defining wind interference are formulated and discussed.
