  • This paper describes an efficient coding method for Korean characters using a three-state transition graph. To our knowledge, this is the first achievement of its kind. This new method, called the Paralle Hangul Dynamic Coding Method(PHDCM), compresses about 3.5 bits per a Korean character, which is more than 1 bit shorter than the conventional codes introduced thus far to achieve extensive code compression. When we ran the method on a MasPar machine, which is on SIMD SM (EFEW-PRAM)., it achieved a 49.314-fold speedup with 64 processors having 10 million Korean characters.

  • The engine containing a radical injector has been studied to improve the performances of efficiency and to reduce the exhaust emissions recently. The engine is far different from general compression ignition engines or spark ignition engines for the concept of combustion process. The inflow characteristic from main chamber into radical chamber during compression stroke is important because the radical chamber must have enough fresh air to generate appropriate radicals. The numerical simulation is performed in each specific shape and the engine speed by using KIVA code. The result shows that the fresh air inflow from main chamber into the radical chamber is the best at 45 degree of the hole angle.

  • This study presents the strength of braced and unbraced cold-formed steel wall frames consisting of several wall studs acting as columns, top and bottom tracks, and bracing members. The strength and the buckling mode of steel wall frames were found to be different due to the change of bracing type. In addition, the spacing of wall studs is a crucial factor to the strength of steel wall frames. The comparisons were made between the test results and the predictions computed based on AISI Code. The related specifications do not clearly provides the effective length factors for the member of cold-formed steel frame under compression. This paper proposes effective length factors for the steel wall frames based on the test results. A theoretical model is also derived to obtain the modulus of elastic support provided by the bracing at mid-height of steel wall frames in this research.

  • In this paper, improved out-of-plane design of parabolic arches was proposed based on the current design code. The arches resist general loading by a combination of axial compression and bending actions, and the interaction formula between two extreme cases of axial and bending actions is generally used for the design. Firstly, the out-of-plane buckling strength of arches in a pure axial compression and a pure bending were studied. Then, out-of-plane design of parabolic aches under general transverse loading was investigated. From the results, it can be found that the proposed design equations provided good prediction of out-of-plane strength for parabolic arches which satisfy the thresholds for deep arches, while proposed design equations overestimated the buckling load of shallow arches.

$\cdot$ 영상 압축에 대한 국제 규격 협회는 JPEG, MPEG I, MPEG II, MPEG IV, H.261, H.263 등이 있으나 본 seminar에서는 JPEG 규격만 논함.

  • This paper presents an experimental as well as a numerical analysis of the in-plane shear behaviour of hollow, $870{\times}840{\times}100mm$ masonry walls, externally strengthened with FRP composites. The experimental approach is devoted to the evaluation of the effectiveness of different composite strengthening configurations and the methodology consists in the diagonal compression of masonry walls. The numerical study assesses the stress and strain state distribution in the unreinforced and strengthened panels using a commercial finite element code. The effect of FRP reinforcement on the masonry behaviour and the capability of modelling to forecast a representative failure mode of the unreinforced and reinforced masonry walls is investigated.

  • Studies have been made on performance evaluation of expansion joint systems for an ordinary highway or road bridge. However little study has been made for runway connection bridges at airports. A study on performance evaluated from computer code analysis and shrinkage, extension, and compression repetition tests based on KS F 4425 is conducted to a newly developed expansion joint system which has been installed in a runway connection bridge at Incheon Airport Extension 2 Construction Site. The MIDAS computer code is used to analyze the performance before the manufacture of the mock-up of expansion joint system on the basis of design requirements. Tests based on the KS F 4425 of 2001 year-version are conducted for the mock-up. Domestic codes and standards to validate the performance of the expansion joint system in a connection bridge have been developed for a vehicle. However the expansion joint system tested in this study is installed in a runway connection bridge for an aircraft. Conservatively the heaviest one among airplanes departing and landing at Incheon Airport is assumed level-F $468.4kN/m^2$ and adopted for the tests and analyses in this study. KS F 4425 method is selected for the shrinkage, extension, and compression repetition tests. No remarkable problem was observed for the 2,500-cycle shrinkage and extension and two million-cycle repeatition load tests. The results of this study are expected to contribute to establishment of code and standard for the performance validation of an expansion joint system installed in a runway connection bridge for an aircraft by providing performance test results and computer analysis results based on finite element methods.

  • This study evaluates the reliability of present European codes in predicting the collapse load of columns made with perforated cold-formed steel (CFS) profiles under combined axial load and bending. To this aim, a series of experimental tests on slender open-section specimens have been performed at varying load eccentricity. Preliminarily, stub column tests have also been performed to calculate the effective section properties of the investigated profile. By comparison of experimental data with code-specified M-N strength domains, the authors demonstrate that present code formulations may underestimate the collapse load of thin-walled perforated open sections. The study is the first step of a wider experimental and numerical study aimed at better describing strength domains of perforated CFS open sections.

  • A method for image compression based on decomposition is presented. We design the efficient coding technique for upper band image signals. This coding technique with directive 1-D DPCM is based on the statistical properties of upper bands. Lower band image signals is encoded using 2-D DPCM. The directive 1-D DPCM is performed, scanning upper bands according to edge direction. And then the predicted error signals of upper band sis coded using B1 and Huffman code, and the predicted error signals of lower band is coded using Huffman code. The proposed system shows improved performance when compared with other existing methods with respect to peak signal to noise ratio(PSMR) and human visual system(HVS) properties.
