  • Wild silkmoths can be utilised sustainably in the production of silk as an income for resource-poor rural communities. However, attack by parasitoids and predators affect the quality of cocoons and quantity of raw silk produced. A laboratory experiment was undertaken to quantify the effect of parasitoids' (dipteran and hymenopteran) and predators' (ants) exit and ingress holes, respectively, on silk production. The mean number of shells required to produce fifty grams of raw silk was highest with cocoons parasitised by a dipteran and lowest with unattacked cocoons (but with moths already emerged). Degumming loss was highest in parasitised and lowest in unttacked cocoons, but both were not different from cocoons predated by ants. Shell weight was highest in unattacked cocoons, followed by hymenopteran-parasitised and predated cocoons, with the dipteran parasitized ones being the least. Single cocoon weight was greater in hymenopteran-parasitised and predated cocoons than the dipteran-parasitised and unattacked cocoons. Shell ratio or raw silk, floss and yarn weights were higher in unattacked than parasitised and predated cocoons. The total loss in raw silk attributable to attack by parasitoids and predators ranged between 17.4~31.2%. The results offer baseline information for assessment of economic losses in wild silk farming due to parasitoids and predators in the field.

  • The introduction of hybrid and exploitation of heterosis has played a vital role in Indian sericulture industry, which clearly depicts a quantum jump in silk production during the last four decades. Since, the introduction of heterosis, progress in silkworm breeding has depended on success or failure in identifying better combiners. Systematic procedures developed have enabled the breeders to identify the best combiners by combining ability test, line ${\TIMES}$ tester analysis or $D^2$ analysis for maximum expression of heterosis. The level of heterosis expressed in the crossbreed population is determined by the interaction between genotype and prevailing environmental factors. Except some of the pre and post cocoon parameters, heterosis is invariably higher in single crosses compared to three-way and double crosses. However, during hot and humid season, when rearing of F1 bivoltine hybrid is unsuccessful at field level and indigenous races results in very low and poor quality yield, three-way and double crosses can play an important role as an intermediary technology. The objective of this article is to review briefly the concept and causes of heterosis, utilization of different forms of heterosis in silk production and its significance in silkworm, Bombyx mori breeding.

  • The lynx spiders are free wandering spiders with long spines on their legs. They do not build web, but hunt small insects on plants. In spite of the facts that the wandering spiders do not produce webs for prey-catching, they also have silk apparatuses even though the functions are not fully defined. This paper describes the microstructural organization of the silk-spinning nozzles and its silk glands of the lynx spider, Oxyopes licenti, revealed by the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The silkspinning nozzles of this spider were identified as three groups: ampullate, pyriform and aciniform glands. Each group of silk gland feed silk into one of the three pairs of spinnerets. Two pairs of major ampullate glands send secretory ductules to the anterior spinnerets, and another two pair of minor ampullate glands supply the middle spinnerets. In addition, the pyriform glands feed silk into the anterior spinnerets (25-30 pairs in females and 24-40 pairs in males), and the aciniform glands send ductules to the middle (9-12 pairs in females and 7-11 pairs in males) and the posterior spinnerets (16-20 pairs in females and 16-17 pairs in males). Among these, the ampullate one is the most predominate gland in both sexes. However the flagelliform and the aggregate glands which had the functions of cocoon production or adhesive thread production in other webbuilding spiders were not observed at both sexes of this spider.

  • Mainly due to limited genetic resources available and also urgent need for hybrids suitable to local conditions, conventional theories and regular methods for bivoltine silkworm breeding are not easily applicable in such a tropical country as Sri Lanka which is recently planning to scale-up the silk industry. A simplified but practical methodology was introduced to overcome such constraints. Through application of such modified informal breeding methods, two hybrids named DP0308 and DP0314 were selected for cocoon production. Details of the altered method of germplasm improvement in the silkworm are presented, along with combining ability and heritability estimates for six parental pure lines in a half-diallel cross.

  • To understand the relationship among different quantitative traits, correlation studies were performed by utilizing eighty-eight inbred strains of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. on twelve economic characters. Analysis resulted in correlation of 5th instar period with total larval period (r = 0.7882), cocoon weight with shell weight (r = 0.8326), shell weight with shell ratio (r = 0.5067), shell ratio with raw silk % (r = 0.7570), raw silk % with filament length (r = 0.3490), filament size (denier) with reelability (r = 0.3193) and boil-off loss % (r = 0.2792). Negative correlation was observed among filament length with filament size (r = 0.7582) and reelability with boil-off loss % (r = -0.3236). Correlation of different quantitative characters for quality silk production is discussed.

  • Mulberry being the only food of silkworm, Bombyx mori L., is of great economic importance to the silk industry, The success in cocoon production mainly depends on the supply of quality leaves in sufficient quantity. In mulberry, where the economic product is leaf, the uptake of nitrogen from soil is very heavy and high responses to application of nutrients have been reported. Nitrogen supports vegetative growth particularly the leaf biomass. Variation in nitrogen harvest index and other physiological and yield contributing traits were estimated in five mulberry genotypes. Considerable variation was observed for nitrogen harvest index, protein yield per plant and harvest index. The correlation studies indicated the protein yield per plant was significantly correlated with leaf yield, nitrogen content in leaf, nitrogen harvest index and harvest index. The broad sense heritability estimates revealed that harvest index showed highest heritability (88.07%) followed by nitrogen content (82.52%), protein yield (70.28%) and nitrogen harvest index (66.52%).

  • In the present study, twelve bivoltine silkworm races were evaluated for its performance based on quantitative and qualitative traits. Seven oval and five peanut cocoon shaped races were reared in different seasons of the year. By using evaluation index method, the results showed that six races were identified as potential parental races. Among oval races, 75xin, KoC, KoZ and among peanut races An 902, 7532 and QD7 were selected as base material. The identified high yielding races will be used in various breeding programs as initial parents for the production of superior bivoltine breeds/hybrids in Vietnam

  • We study ultra-relativistic jets on several tens kpc scales through three-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations using a new RHD code based on the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme. Utilizing the high-resolution and high-accuracy capabilities of the new code, we especially explore the structures and energetics of nonlinear flows, such as shocks, turbulence, velocity shear in different parts of jets. We find that the mildly relativistic shocks which form in the jet backflow are most effective for the shock dissipation of the jet energy, while the turbulent dissipation is largest either in the backflow or in the shocked ICM, depending on the jet parameter. The velocity shear is strongest across the jet flow to the cocoon boundary. Our results should have important implications for the studies of high-energy cosmic-ray production in radio galaxies.

  • When the clitellate tiger worms(Eisenia fetida) were fed with paper mill sludge, sewage sludge of agricultural-urban area and sewage sludge of agricultural area, number of cocoons produced by individual clitellate earthworm for 104 days were 11.8, 8.6 and 3.5, respectively. However, clitellate earthworms that had been fed with sewage sludge of agricultural-urban area for 52 days or fed with sewage sludge of agricultural area for 95 days could not produce cocoons, whereas the earthworms that were fed with paper mill sludge kept producing cocoons through the investigating period. The hatchability of cocoons produced by the clitellate tiger worms(Eisenia fetida) fed with sewage sludge of agricultural-urban region, sewage sludge of agricultural region and paper mill sludge were 42.8%, 38.3% and 39.2%, respectively. And hatching periods of cocoons were 33.8~36.0 days, which were not affected by the kinds of sludges. However, the cocoons produced by clitellate earthworms which had been fed with sewage sludge for about 1.5 months could not hatch at all. Death rates of second generation hatched from cocoons produced by tiger worms(Eisenia fetida) which had been fed with the sewage sludge from agricultural-urban region and the sewage sludge from agricultural region reached to 100% and 90% at 60 days after hatching, respectively, whereas death rate of second generation fed with paper mill sludge reached to 16%.

실증분석을 위해서는 SFA(Stochastic Frontier Analysis)의 방법론 체계를 적용하였다.
