  • Recently, with the rapid development in the industries such as mechanical plants, automobiles, ships and marine structures, it is enlarged by the use of the SS 41 steel. This mechanical plants and marine structures are exposed m corrosion because of Cl-under marine environments. To protect their accidents, mainly applied anti-corrosion epoxy coating and various protective its structures. In this study, corrosion control characteristics on the epoxy coating were investigated by the galvanic corrosion of impressed voltage tester under marine environments The main results obtained are as follows; 1. Corrosion current density of amine-epoxy coating becomes more increased than that of other epoxy coating and the time area rate of pin hole and pit until 5% becomes most rapid. 2. The potential of SUS 304 stainless steel(cathode) for Al-epoxy coating is nearly zero potential. 3. Corrosion current density of Amine-epoxy by shot blast becomes more decreased than that of not shot blast and cathodic potential becomes more noble. 4. As distance of anode and cathode is more decreased, corrosion current density of epoxy coating is more increased and cathodic potential becomes less noble.

  • Hot-dip aluminized coating has been widely used to protect steel substrate against corrosion. In this study, the corrosion behavior of hot-dip aluminized type 409L (11% Cr) stainless steel (SS) was investigated using macro- and micro-scale polarization tests. An Al-Fe-Si alloy layer that was formed due to inter-diffusion of alloying elements between Al coating and SS substrate was observed between Al coating and 409L SS substrate. In both macro- and micro-scale polarization tests, the corrosion potential ($E_{corr}$) of the 409L SS substrate was much nobler than that of the Al coating and alloy layer. $E_{corr}$ of the alloy layer was between that of Al coating and 409L SS substrate. This indicates that the alloy layer can act as a buffer between the more active Al coating and the nobler SS substrate for pit growth in aluminized SS. The presence of the alloy layer appears to be helpful in hindering pitting corrosion of aluminized SS.

  • Layered silicate clay montmorillonite (MMT) has been used in nanocomposite coating to improve corrosion protection by reinforcing the barrier property. The better dispersion of MMT in the coating produces a higher barrier effect. Pretreatment with MMT could favor the delamination of clay platelets, facilitating MMT dispersion in the coating. In the present work, a montmorillonite/silica (MMT/Si) composite was prepared by the in situ sol-gel method. x-ray diffraction measurements and field-emission scanning electron microscopy observations showed silica crystal formation and increased basal spacing between the MMT platelets. Composite MMT/Si particles were introduced in an epoxy resin to reinforce the corrosion protection of the coating applied on the AA2024 surface. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed to characterize the protective property of the coating. The results demonstrated the high barrier effect of the coating containing 5 wt% of MMT/Si. Adhesion evaluation after a salt spray test exhibited a high adherence to the epoxy coating containing MMT/Si.

  • A layer-by-layer coating was produced using electrophoretic deposition for a HA/Al2O3 coating layer and a bioglass coating layer on Co-Cr-Mo alloy with a roughness of 0.5 ㎛ (400 emery paper SiC). The corrosion behaviour was analyzed by assessing the coating layers' exceptional corrosion resistance, which outperformed the substrate. Cr ion release test using AAS was carried out, indicating that factional graded coating inhibited ion release from the uncoated substrate to coated sample. The porosity was expressed as a percentage, representing the extent of imperfections on the surface of all coatings. These imperfections fell within an acceptable range of 1% to 3%. The roughness of the coated surface was measured using atomic force microscopy, which revealed an excellent roughness value of 3.32 nm. Tape test technique for adhesion revealed that the removal area of the substrate coating layer varied by 11.92%. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of all coating material peaks and verified phases of the deposited coating layers. These findings provided evidence that the coating composition remains unaffected by the electrophoretic deposition process. The bioactivity was assessed by immersion in a simulated bodily fluid, which revealed the formation of HCA during a period of 5 days.

  • Sixteen reinforced concrete laboratory specimens were used to evaluate a number of corrosion prevention methods under an accelerated (6 months) testing program. The use of galvanic thermal sprayed zinc, galvanic embedded anodes, a tri-silane sealer, an acrylic coating, and an epoxy/polyurethane coating was evaluated. The specimens received various treatments prior to exposure to accelerated corrosion. The performance of the treatments was evaluated with respect to corrosion currents, chloride ingress, extent of cracking, severity of rust staining, and visual inspection of the reinforcing steel after the conclusion of testing and dissection. Results indicated that the tri-silane sealer, the conjoint use of galvanic thermal sprayed zinc and epoxy/polyurethane coating, the epoxy/polyurethane coating, and acrylic coating performed better than the other methods tested. Higher chloride concentrations were measured in the vicinity of embedded zinc anodes.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate polarization characteristics of WC-based alloy coatings in alkaline solution. The coatings were fabricated with WC-CrC-Ni, WC-Co-Cr and WC-Co composite powders by HVOF process. Corrosion tests of coatings and substrate were carried out using potentiostat/galvanostat at solution with pH 8 and pH 13. Corrosion potential(Ecorr) and corrosion current density(Icorr) could be studied from polarization curve, and corrosion behavior was analyzed by SEM and EDS. WC-Co-Cr coating and WC-CrC-Ni coating showed more favorable anti-corrosion characteristics than WC-Co coating and substrate at solution with pH 8 and pH 13.

  • The electrocoating for automotive bodies is pigmented with a mixture of titanium dioxide and kaolin. In this study, the effects of titanium dioxide and kaolin contents in coating on electrodeposition process, drying, and surface properties such as surface roughness, gloss, impact resistance and corrosion resistance were investigated. Titanium dioxide and kaolin in coating do not have a decisive effect on curing reaction during drying and corrosion resistance but on gloss, surface roughness, impact resistance and electrodeposition process of coating. According to its size and shape on coating surface, pigment contents increased during drying process. However, the contents of kaolin and $TiO_2$ in coating didn't affect the corrosion resistance on zinc phosphated substrate, and the curing properties.
