Protective coatings play an important role in the protection of metallic structures against corrosive environment. The main function of anticorrosive coating is to prevent the materials from corrosive agents, such as water, oxygen and ions. In the study, the corrosion protection properties of urethane and epoxy coating systems were evaluated using EIS methods exposed to the corrosion acceleration test such as Norsok M501, Prohesion and hygrothermal cyclic test. AFM analysis of the coating systems was carried out to monitor the change of roughness of coatings. Urethane coating system was more stable than the epoxy coating under given cyclic conditions. Water uptake into the urethane coatings was less than that into the epoxy coating. The urethane coating system showed better corrosion protection than epoxy coating system based on the changes of the impedance modulus at low frequency region with exposure time. Consequently, the corrosion protection properties of the epoxy and urethane coatings was well correspond with their surface roughness changes and water uptakes.
The high rate of corrosion of magnesium alloys makes it limited for industrial applications. Therefore, surface treatment is required to enhance their corrosion resistance. In our study, a chemical conversion coating for protecting the corrosion of the magnesium alloy, AZ31B, was prepared by using a phosphate-permanganate solution. The chemical conversion coating had a limited protection ability due to defects arising from cracks and pores in the coating layer. The sol-gel coating was prepared by using trimethoxymethylsilane (MTMS) and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) as precursors, and aluminum acetyl acetonate as a ring opening agent. The corrosion protection properties of sol-gel and conversion coatings in 0.35wt% NaCl solution were measured by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization test. The EIS results indicated that the resistance of the chemical conversion coating with the sol-gel coating was significantly improved through the sol-gel sealed phosphate-permanganate conversion coating. The results of the potentiodynamic polarization test revealed that the sol-gel coating decreased the corrosion current density ($I_{corr}$). The SEM image showed that the sol-gel coating sealed conversion coating and improved corrosion protection.

In order to investigate the effect of TiN coating on corrosion fatigue behavior of metal, the rotary bending corrosion fatigue tests were carried out in 3% NaCl solution by using the round bar specimens of high-speed steel, SKH-9, coated with TiN by PVD method. From the experimental results, fatigue strength of TiN coating steel in air was obvious improvement as compared with that of the substrate because of the restriction of dislocation movement in near surface of the substrate by hard thin film. In 3% NaCl solution, corrosion fatigue life of TiN coating specimen in high stress level was improvement same as in air. But in low stress level, corrosion fatigue life of TiN coating one was equivalent to that without coating, due to much crack initiated from corrosion pits formed at the substrate by failure of coating layer.
Thermal sprayed Ni-Cr alloy coating on the carbon steel was carried out erosion-corrosion test and electrochemical corrosion test in the marine environment. The erosion-corrosion behavior and electrochemical corrosion characteristics of substrate(SS400) and thermal sprayed Ni-Cr coating was investigated. The erosion-corrosion control efficiency of Ni-Cr coating to substrate was also estimated quantitatively. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) The weight loss rate of Ni-Cr coating layer by the erosion-corrosion compared with substrate was smaller. With the lapse of time, the weight loss rate of substrate was linearly increased in $25{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ solution, but that of Ni-Cr coating became stable. 2) The corrosion potential of substrate became less noble than that of Ni-Cr coating layer, and the corrosion current density of Ni-Cr coating became lower than that of substrate. 3) The control efficiency of erosion-corrosion of Ni-Cr coating compared to substrate became more dull than that of corrosion in $25{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and $5000{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ solution.
Thermal sprayed Cu-Ni alloy coating on the carbon steel was carried out impingement erosion-corrosion test and electrochemical corrosion test in the marine environment. The impingement erosion-corrosion behavior and electrochemical corrosion characteristics of substrate(SS400) and thermal sprayed Cu-Ni coating was investigated, and the corrosion control efficiency of Cu-Ni coating to substrate was estimated quantitatively. Main results obtained are as follows : 1) The weight loss rate of Cu-Ni coating layer by the impingement erosion-corrosion compared with substrate was smaller in high specific resistance solution than in low specific resistance solution. 2) The corrosion potential of Cu-Ni coating layer spray coating in the marine environment became more noble than that of substrate. 3) With the lapse of time, corrosion current density of Cu-Ni coating layer became stable, but that of substrate was increased. 4) As the corrosion control efficiency of Cu-Ni coating layer in the marine environment was over 90%, its anti-corrosion characteristics was excellent.
Corrosion of the steel rebar in coastal environment caused huge economical loss of the globe. Therefore, coating on the steel rebar being used to mitigate the corrosion. In the present study, we have applied epoxy coating on arc thermal sprayed Al coating (a dual metal/polymeric coating) vis-à-vis compared with as coated one (Al coating). The corrosion studies were performed in simulated concrete pore solution with 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution. The morphology of the dual epoxy/Al coating is smooth while Al coating shows rankle and defects. Due to defects, Al coating is susceptible to corrosion while dual epoxy/Al coating has performed excellent compared to as coated one at extended period of immersion.
The effect of interlayer coating thickness of Ni and Ti on corrosion behavior was studied for TiN ion plat-ed steel plate. Interlayer coating was carried out in a single and bi-layer to a various thickness combination prior to final TiN coating. Corrosion behavior was evaluated by anodic polarization test in 1N H2SO4 as well as salt spray test. Ni interlayer coating was effectived in reducing corrosion current density of active region and Ti interlayer coating over Ni coating reduced the anodic corrosion current density by an order of 4 with increasing the thickness of Ti up to$ 3\mu\textrm{m}$. The improvement of corrosion resistance by Ni/Ti interlayer coating was attributed to the effective prevention of penetration of active corrosion agent resulting from the inherent corrosion resistance of Ni and Ti. Putting corrosion behavior was observed from salt spray test result for all specimens and corrosion resistance at salt atmosphere was enhanced with increasing Ni and Ti thickness, Cor-lay TiN coating was spalled out by the generation of corrosion products.
Zn-Mg-Al alloy hot-dip galvanized steel sheet has high corrosion resistance. Compared to conventional Zn coating with the same coating thickness, the high corrosion resistance Zn-Mg-Al coating is more corrosion-resistant. Various coating compositions are commercially produced and applied in diverse fields. However, these steel sheets typically contain up to 3 wt% magnesium. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for higher corrosion resistance in harsh corrosive environments. Therefore, variations in Mg and Al contents were investigated while evaluating primary properties and performance. As a result, we developed new alloy-coated steel with ultra-high corrosion resistance. A Zn-5 wt%Mg-Al coated steel sheet was evaluated for its corrosion resistance and various properties. As the amount of Mg added increased, the corrosion loss tended to decrease. The corrosion resistance of the coated steel sheet in a particular composition, the Zn-5 wt%Mg-Al coating sheet, was about 1.5 to 2 times higher than that of the conventional Zn-3 wt%Mg-Al coating sheet. Ultimately, this ultra-high corrosion-resistance coated steel sheet will provide a robust solution to conserve Zn resources and contribute to a low-carbon society.
The corrosion resistance of reinforcing bar was studied to endure the marine environment during shipment. The red rust on the surface did not damage the adherence in the concrete structures, especially in highly alkaline environment, but made the consumer doubt of the quality. The passivation process by alkalization of the quenching water in the tempcore process failed to endure the long shipping period. The ceramic coating by sol-gel process improved the corrosion resistance without damaging the mechanical properties and adherence between concrete and reinfiorcing bar. Optimal concentration of the coating solution and coating temperature were tested. No additional energy was necessary for the coating process by spraying during cooling process, resulting simplified process and low cost. Salt spray test, cyclic corrosion test and atmospheric test were employed to confirm the resistance. The corrosion rates were presented by rating number and polarization resistance. The coating layer was examined by FIB, XRD and SEM etc.
Corrosion behavior of TiN coated steel was studied in terms of thickness of interlayer Ti and TiN coating TiN was are ion plated to a thickness of 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ respectively with interlayer coating of Ti of 1$\mu\textrm{m}$, 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 3$\mu\textrm{m}$. Corrosion resistance of TiN coated steel was evaluated by anodic palarization test in 1N H2SO4 as well as salt spray test. Porosity of each coating was also tested by using SO2 test method. Corrosion current density decreased with increasing TiN coating thickness and Ti interlayer coating markedly enhanced the corrosion resistance. Ti interlayer coating of 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 3$\mu\textrm{m}$ prior to 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ TiN coating decreased the corrosion current density of active range by an order of 4 and that of passive range by an order of 2. This improvement was associated with the retardation of corrosive agent penetration with increasing coating thickness and inherent corrosion resistance of Ti interlayer. Ti interlayer coating was also very effective in improvement of corrosion resistance under salt atmosphere.
