For the evaluation of wind resources, numerical simulation was carried out as a tool for establishing wind map around the korean peninsula. Initial and boundary condition are given by 3 hourly RDAPS(Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System) data of KMA(Korea Meteorology Administration) and high resolution terrain elevation land cover(30 seconds) data from USGS(United States Geological Survey). Furthermore, Data assimilation was adopted to improve initial meteorological data with buoy and QuikSCAT seawinds data. The simulation was performed from 2003 to 2006 year. To understand wind data correctly in complex terrain as the korean peninsula, at this research, Wind map was classified 4 categories by distance from coastline and elevation.
In this paper, a small portion of coastline on the EAST SEA was studied using CORONA panoramic satellite photo and 1:5000 Korean National Topographic Map. The project site near Kangneung city was 3 Km shoreline on the Kangmoon Beach and the SongJeong Beach, which have suffered from severe erosion. The first and the most important step was to rectify a CORONA image over the project site. A rigid mathematical model and a heuristic polynomial transformation were used for the purpose. The rectified image was overlaid with 1:5000 Korean National Topographic Map produced by aerial mapping. Among numerous methods for shoreline erosion measurement, area-based approach was chosen and used for the computation for annual shoreline recession. The final result of the analysis was that the average recession in the period of 1963-1998 was 33.6m and the annual rate was 0.96m.
A long-term wind resource map was made to provide the key design data for the 2.5 GW Korean West-South Offshore Wind Project, and its reliability was validated. A one-way dynamic downscaling of the MERRA reanalysis meteorological data of the Yeongwang-Gochang offshore was carried out using WindSim, a Computational Fluid Dynamics based wind resource mapping software, to establish a 33-year time series wind resource map of 100 m x 100 m spatial resolution and 1-hour interval temporal resolution from 1979 to 2012. The simulated wind resource map was validated by comparison with wind measurement data from the HeMOSU offshore meteorological tower, the Wangdeungdo Island meteorological tower, and the Gochang transmission tower on the nearby coastline, and the uncertainty due to long-term variability was analyzed. The long-term variability of the wind power was investigated in inter-annual, monthly, and daily units while the short-term variability was examined as the pattern of the coefficient of variation in hourly units. The results showed that the inter-annual variability had a maximum wind index variance of 22.3% while the short-term variability, i.e., the annual standard deviation of the hourly average wind power, was $0.041{\pm}0.001$, indicating steady variability.
The meteorological events that cause most strong winds in Brazil are extra-tropical cyclones, downbursts and tornadoes. However, one hurricane formed off the coastline of southern Brazil in 2005, a tropical storm formed in 2010 and there are predictions that others may form again. Events such as those described in the paper and which have occurred before 1987, generate data for the wind map presented in the Brazilian wind loading code NBR-6123. This wind map presents the reference wind speeds based on 3-second gust wind speed at 10 m height in open terrain, with 50-year return period, varying from 30 m/s (north half of country) to 50 m/s (extreme south). There is not a separation of the type of climatological event which generated each registered velocity. Therefore, a thunderstorm (TS), an extra-tropical pressure system (EPS) or even a tropical cyclone (TC) are treated the same and its resulting velocities absorbed without differentiation. Since the flow fields generated by each type of meteorological event may be distinct, the indiscriminate combination of the highest wind velocities with aerodynamic coefficients from boundary layer wind tunnels may lead to erroneous loading in buildings.
The propagation and associated run-up process of tsunami are numerically investigated in this study. A transoceanic propagation model is first used to simulate the distant propagation of tsunamis. An inundation model is then employed to simulate the subsequent run-up process near coastline. A case study is done for the 1960 Chilean tsunami. A detailed maximum inundation map at Hilo Bay is obtained and compared with field observation and other numerical model predictions. A very reasonable agreement is observed.
This paper deals with the study of the effective reflecting area of the land targets for the improvement of the map of the Radar Simulator, through the analysis of the pictures on P.P.I Scope. It is very important to anticipate the effective refiecting area of land marks, either forinterpretation of radar scope or for simulating accurately the radar scope, but has seldom been studied theoretically or experimentarily, especially on the stand point of simulating the radar scope. Most of the maps of Radar Simulator in use are made without consideration of the effective reflecting area of land marks, so that the P.P.I. Scope of the Radar Simulator may show much different pictures from the actual shore line and other targets. This paper has derived the following conclusiions by experimental procedures. 1. The effective area of the land target greatly varies according to the gradient of the contours, roughness and material of the land surfaces, so that simulator maps of uniformly coated land taret practically used now many be effectively improved by varying the intensity of the land marks proposed in this paper. 2. The intensity of the land targets on the P.P.I. is also related much to the distance from the radar, so that the precalculation of this effect may results in a much simulated P.P.I. picture improved. 3. If the ambient condition is constant, the intensity of the picture increases as the height of the targets is increased.
This paper introduces the optimum macro-siting of a potential site for an offshore wind farm around Jeju Island using the RDAPS sea wind model. The statistical model was developed by analyzing the sea wind data from RDAPS model, and the meso-scale digital wind map was prepared. To develop the high resolution spatial calibration model, Artificial Neural Network(ANN) models were used to construct the wind and bathymetric maps. Accuracy and consistency of wind/bathymetric spatial calibration models were obtained using analysis of variance. The optimization problem was defined to maximize the energy density satisfying the criteria of maximum water depth and maximum distance from the coastline. The candidate site was selected through Genetic Algorithm(GA). From the results, it is possible to predict roughly a candidate site location for the installation of the offshore wind jam, and to evaluate the wind resources of the proposed site.
The erosion(or sediment) reaches very serious level due to the aftermath by the imprudent reclamation on the coast. Continuous studies for long on coastline erosion may be warranted and possible countermeasures proposed because the change of the coastline has been progressed slowly for a long period of time in a wide area. Many experts anticipate that the global sea level's average increase by 19-35 cm due to global warming may certainly have an effect on the coastal erosion throughout the world. Thus, a more rigorous study on the causes of changing coastlines is particularly proposed to find ways to counteract any possible threats against coastal environments. In this study, Ortho aerial photo and hydrographic survey datum were utilized to quantitatively analyze coastal erosion and sediment patterns. This paper also seeks to prove that a parcel under the sea occurred due to relatively significant changes to the coastline. We created Ortho aerial photo using aerial photos taken each decade ('81, '93, '00), overlaid them onto a cadastral registration map, and calculated each amount of erosion and sediment while accounting for the tide level and without considering it. As the result of this study, we could propose that the methods of Ortho aerial photo and the marine observation datum were the effective ways of change detection in erosion, sediment, and artificial reclamation of the coastline for a long time.
This study aims at examining the background and development process of Masan city after Koryo Dynasty, making a reconstructive map of Original Masan using the first registration maps made in 1912 and analyzing the urban structure of the Original Masan area. The origin of Masan city went back to Koryo dynasty. Around 1040 Koryo government placed an official shipping facility in Masan to transport the taxed grain to the capital city. After that Masan became an important port covering the southern part of KyungSang-Do. And the urbanization of the Original Masan began to bud after a shipping facility was again established by the Chosun Dynasty in 1760 and strengthened in the 19th century after the social standing system was broken and many peasants moved to cities as daily workers. In 1899 Masan was forced to be opened to foreign powers and they placed an international settlement distanced from the area(Original Masan). After this many Japanese advanced to the international settlement and further to the area. The advancement of Japanese brought a critical change in the urban structure of the area. Land was owned by Japanese and many modern sysytems were introduced such as modern buildings, new roads, railroad and modern factories. According to the reconstructive map of the area, 80.5% of land lots are less than $200m^2$ showing the size of each land lot is comparatively small. And Japanese occupied 31.5% of the land in the area. Their land was located on the stratigic points near the port and the center of commerce. The ratio of the road area to the whole land was around 14%, not so low for urban areas in that time. The reconstructive map reveals the exact coastline of the year 1912 erased now due to filling the sea and extending the land, Present Masan city has been developed having the Original Masan as its nucleus. The area has been always the center of urban activities for Masan city. Making an exact reconstructive map for the area and analyzing the urban structure of the area in 1912 is a very important work to understand Masan city wholy.

Objectives Children are one of the most vulnerable populations to the impact of disasters. We aimed to examine children's mental health in the area affected by the Hebei Spirit oil spill accident on December 7, 2007. Methods A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted using the Korean versions of the Children's Depression Inventory and State Anxiety Inventory for Children on 1,362 children attending elementary schools in the affected area. The information on distances between the nearest contaminated coastline to the child's residential house or attending school were obtained using a web-based map by inputting two address points. The symptom risks of depression and state anxiety were estimated by multiple logistic regression analyses adjusted for age, gender, and other covariates. Results Children with the closest distance (in the fourth quartile) to the school from the contaminated coastline showed a significantly higher symptom risk of depression compared to those with the farthest distance (first quartile)(odds ratio, 2.73; 95% confidence interval, 1.40-5.33), while there was no significant association between anxiety symptoms and distance. Conclusions Children, a vulnerable population for mental health impact by the oil spill accident, should be included in mental health programs in the community along with their family as victims of the disaster.
