Coastal Structure and Breakwater Engineering in UK: From Research & Development through Dissemination to Application

  • This paper discusses the development of design methods for coastal structures and breakwaters in the United Kingdom, with particular attention to changes in research activities, publications, technology transfer and the use of research results over the last 200 years. The paper describes some examples of the design and construction of breakwaters and seawalls, methods by which their designs and construction techniques were improved, and how those improvements were promulgated within civil engineering. It discusses problems that arise from recent trends in research funding and publication, and seeks to indicate some possibilities for the future. The paper draws on the author's experience in research and specialist consultancy at HR Wallingford, published papers and books, but is also guided by lessons from related work in UK and elsewhere.

월파조건에서 경사제 항내측 사면에 거치된 테트라포드의 안정성 실험 (Experiments on Stability of Tetrapods on Rear Slope of Rubble Mound Structures under Wave Overtopping Condition)

  • 본 연구에서는 항내측 피복재의 안정성에 대한 단면수리실험을 수행하였다. 국내 항만 및 어항설계기준에서는 항내측 피복재의 중량산정 방법으로 상치콘크리트가 설치되지 않은 조건에 대하여 항내측 일부구간(최저설계 정수면에서 0.5 H 깊이까지)을 항외측 피복재와 동일 중량비의 피복재를 사용하도록 설계 도표로 제시하고 있다. 국내에 설계되는 대부분의 경사식 구조물은 상치콘크리트가 설치되어 있으며, 이에 대한 안정중량 산정 방법이 필요하다. van der Meer(1999)가 제시한 안정계수(Nod = 0.5)를 기준으로 피복재(테트라포드)의 안정성을 검토하였으며, 항외측 피복재의 0.8배에 해당하는 중량의 피복재를 항내측에 거치할 경우 안정성을 확보할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

  • 선진국에서는 VE/LCC분석을 적극적으로 활용되고 있는 반면에 국내에서는 그렇지 못함으로써 자칫 잘못된 투자결정으로 인해 경제적 효용성을 상실하는 경우가 많이 있을 것으로 판단된다. 그러므로 먼저 VE/LCC에서 사용되고 있는 기법을 각각 정리해 보고 설계 보고서별 VE분석기법과 LCC분석기법을 분리하여 장점 및 단점을 분석하였다. 그리고 국내에서 LCC분석이 제대로 이루어지지 못하는 원인을 생각해보고 LCC 분석을 통한 Project의 경제적 효용성을 극대화 할 수 있도록 하기 위해서 선행되어야 할 사항들을 도출하고 국내 항만설계에 적용된 VE/LCC 기법의 적용사례를 분석하여 향후 VE/LCC 기법의 설계적용을 위한 보다 개선된 방안을 제시하고자 하였다.

A study on the optimal configuration of harbor structure under the combined loads

  • Response of harbor structure to environmental loads such as wave load, impact load, ship's contacting load, is a fundamental factor in designing of the structure's optimal configuration. In this paper, typical environmental loads against coastal structures are investigated for designing of the optimal harbor structure. Loads to be considered here are wave load, impact load and contacting load due to ship mooring. Statistical analysis for several harbor structure types under the corresponding loads is carried out, followed by investigation of effect of individual environmental load. Based on these, the optimal configuration for the harbor structure is obtained after considerable engineering process. Estimation of contacting load of the ship is suggested using effective energy concepts for the load, and analysis of structural behavior is done for the optimal designing of the structure in the particular load. A guideline for the design process of the harbor structure is established, and safety of the structure is examined by proposed scheme. For verification of the analytical approach, various steel-piled coastal structures and caissons are chosen and relevant structural analyses are carried out using the Finite Element Methods combined with MIDAS/GTS and ANSYS code. It is found using the Morison equation that impact load cannot be a major load in the typical harbor structure compared with the original wave load, and that configuration shape of the structure may play an important role in consideration of the response criteria.

Reflection Characteristics of Eco Block on Seabed

  • In order to protect coastal facilities mainly from wave and current actions, the self-locking eco blocks constituting elements of protecting shore structures against scouring were designed. These blocks are adapted to the sloping bottom, coastal dunes, and submerged coastal pipelines, counteracting the destructive and erosive impulse action. A series of laboratory experiments has been conducted to investigate the reflection of water waves over and against a train of protruded or submerged shore structures and compare the reflecting capabilities of incident waves including wave forces. In this study the hydraulic model experiment was conducted to identify the performance of newly designed water affinity eco blocks to keep the coast slope and bottom mound from scouring by reduction of the wave reflection and to convince stability of the block placement. Revised design of each block element was also tested for field conditions. From the result of experiments, the field applicability of the developed blocks and placement was discussed afterward.

해안림의 방풍 효과에 영향을 미치는 설치 파라미터 분석 (INSTALLATION PARAMETERS EFFECTING ON THE WIND PROOF OF A COASTAL FOREST)

  • The objective of this research lies in the effect of installation parameters influencing on the wind proof performance of the coastal forest for damage prevention. The dissipation ratio of incident wind power is developed as an assessment index to make a lumped parameter study possible. From the real field data of East, West, and South Sea bounded on the Korean peninsula, single and double storied forests were modeled in three-dimensional shape with computer aided design, and so was done the artificial structures such as wind break, sand accumulating fence, and sand dune, etc With a commercial code ANSYS-CFX, the computational result from the comparison of dissipation ratio between single and double storied forest shows the effect of composition, and also the installation effect is investigated for artificial structures with optimal dimension of distance.

해방 직후 항공사진을 이용한 강원도 해안선 변화 분석 (Analysis of Gangwon-do Coastline Changes Using Aerial Photograph Immediately after the Liberation)

  • Social costs are increasing in Gangwon-do east coast due to coastal erosion. Long-term coastline change information is essential for analyzing this phenomenon. In this study, aerial photographs immediately after liberation are used for 1950's coastline extraction. The study area is from Sokcho Cheongho beach to Yangyang Seorak beach. The aerial photograph is geometrically corrected using DLT(Direct Linear Transformation) method to extract past coastline and compare it with present data. Coastal erosion and deposition areas are calculated in study area. Artificial structures such as harbors and breakwaters have caused changes in ocean currents and sediments from river estuaries. In most cases, the deposition occurred at the southern area of artificial structures and the erosion occurred on surrounding beaches. Coastline information extracted from past aerial photographs can be useful to provide information on long-term changes.

무인 착저식 해양 콘관입시험기 개발 (Development of Unmanned Seabed type Marine Cone Penetration Testing System)

  • In the design and construction of the coastal/offshore structures, it is very important to evaluate the geotechnical characteristics of marine soils, which support the structures. Although the offshore site investigation is much more difficult than onshore, safe and precise jobs have not been accomplished in Korea because of the insufficiency of the test equipments especially for the site with deep water depth. The main objective of this study is to develop a new type of marine cone penetration testing(CPT) system, which can be utilized to even deep sea and high depth of soil layer. The system is one of seabed types and employs the conventional cone, which shows more reliable results than miniature cone. The most important parts of the marine CPT including continuous rod system, cone penetration system with wheel drive, automatic cone rod assembly/dissembly system etc., were designed and manufactured. Some tests to verify the developed marine CPT system were performed at both onshore and offshore sites as well as mechanical test in laboratory. The test results show the consistent and promising performance of the new equipment, and thereafter the system would be applicable to various sites with practical/economical advantages.

태풍에 의한 우리나라 해안구조물의 파괴 특성 (Damage characteristics of coastal structures by the typhoon in Korea)

  • In this study we collected and analyzed cases where typhoons damaged coastal structures in Korea in the past 6 years, and hydraulic model tests were conducted in 2D flume. 2 areas where damage was concentrated were selected from ports that had suffered damage. The selected area was Kyungsang-namdo, where there are a total of 26 national ports. Damage to these two areas was organized by wind direction of the typhoons and the direction of the entrance of the port, and destruction patterns were analyzed. 2D hydraulic model tests were conducted of Deabyeun port, one of the damaged areas. Results were as follows: 1. As a result of survey, ports that had entrances that were open to winddirection of typhoon (Anti-clockwise direction) tended to be damaged mare, whereas ports that blocked by island and ports that were not open to wind direction of typhoon were not damaged. 2. As a result of the tests, there was damage that occurred when using the section of designed section, whereas there was no damage when the TTP weight was increased.

Structural health monitoring using piezoceramic transducers as strain gauges and acoustic emission sensors simultaneously

  • Piezoceramic transducers have been widely used in the health monitoring of civil structures. However, in most cases, they are used as sensors either to measure strain or receive stress waves. This paper proposes a method of using piezoelectric transducers as strain gauges and acoustic emission (AE) sensors simultaneously. The signals received by piezoceramic transducers are decomposed into different frequency components for various analysis purposes. The low-frequency signals are used to measure strain, whereas the high-frequency signals are used as acoustic emission signal associated with local damage. The b-value theory is used to process the AE signal in piezoceramic transducers. The proposed method was applied in the bending failure experiments of two reinforced concrete beams to verify its feasibility. The results showed that the extracted low-frequency signals from the piezoceramic transducers had good agreement with that from the strain gauge, and the processed high-frequency signal from piezoceramic transducers as AE could indicate the local damage to concrete. The experimental results verified the feasibly of structural health monitoring using piezoceramic transducers as strain gauges and AE sensors simultaneously, which can advance their application in civil engineering.
