Recently, coastal erosion has become an important issue in relation to keeping territorial integrity of a nation as well as protecting the coastal marine ecosystem. This study examines some apprehensions about the effectiveness of the existing legal system concerning prevention of coastal erosion. After examining several case studies in Scotland, the USA, and the Netherlands, this study proposes appropriate revisional legal measures that can be applied in Korea: first, the coastal management act should be revised for stronger, enforceable and practical legal grounds emphasizing minimal coastal erosion; second, the proposed "Comprehensive Coastal Erosion Prevention Plan" should be established and implemented in four steps such as characterization of issues through surveys of stakeholders and demand assessment, plan establishment, execution, and maintenance and management; third, there is a demand to establish and implement a legal framework to support monitoring activities which provide important data and information to prevent coastal erosion; fourth, the chronic region of damage is designated as the "Vulnerable Area" to be protected and managed accordingly; fifth, the "Coastal Coordination council" is established and operated for developing an integrated coastal management policy and visions for sustainable coastal zone, as well as coordinating and intervention of any activities which may cause coastal erosion.
Coastal cities suffer a great deal of storm and wind damage. The storm and wind characteristics vary between cities. Therefore, a storm and wind damage management system suited for specific characteristics is required for each coastal city. In this study, we analyze the current situation and establish the problem of storm and wind damage management system in regards to urban management, coastal management and disaster management. We also review the storm and wind damage management system for the USA and Japan. We consequently propose a plan to improve the storm and wind damage management system. As a result of the study, in terms of city management, we recommend the compulsory identification of disaster prevention districts, implementation of the integrated coastal city management plan, designation of natural disaster risk mitigation area as disaster prevention district, the division of disaster prevention district into wind damage prevention district, storm damage prevention district, erosion damage prevention district, the building of restrictions at the disaster prevention district by ordinance, etc. In regards to coastal management, we suggest the delegation of authority to delegate coastal erosion management area to the local government, the subdivision of coastal erosion management area into erosion serious area, erosion progress area, erosion concern area, the building restrictions at coastal erosion management area by ordinance, development of erosion prediction chart, etc. In relation to disaster management, we recommend the integration of "countermeasures against natural disasters act" and "disasters and safety management basic act", the local government-led disaster prevention system, the local disaster management network, and the customized local disaster prevention plan, etc.
Coastal vegetation consists of rooted flowering marine plants that provide a variety of ecosystem services to the coastal areas they colonize. The attenuation of currents and waves and sediment stabilization are often listed among these services. From this point of view, artificial seaweed is an effective method of controlling sea bed sediment and stabilization without damaging the landscape or the stability of the coastline. A series of hydraulic experiments were performed in a wave channel with regular and irregular waves to examine the effect of artificial seaweed in relation to scouring and beach erosion prevention. Based on the results of these experiments, the coastal vegetation model is efficient against scouring and beach erosion.

A beach has such functions as disaster prevention, providing an amenity place, attracting people and maintaining the coastal ecosystem. Already well known that a beach provides an amenity place, it has also been ascertained through various examples that a sand beach performs a very important function to maintain the coastal ecosystem as well. However, Beach erosion began to occur in Korea in the 1990's and posed a social problem in the late 1990's. Nowadays, along the shorelines of Korea's many beaches, about 400 beaches have reported erosion. This study demonstrate the Disaster Overall Prevention System for Beach Erosion and it's application. The Disaster Overall Prevention System for Beach Erosion is a coastal management system established for managing the implementation of long-term countermeasures to protect eroded beaches effectively in this study. Especially, the economic feasibility test and adaptive management for sustainable mitigation included in DOPS. The coastal prevention work applied to Namae beach is carried out by Disaster Overall Prevention System. Consequently, beach nourishment is proposed as a main countermeasure. Also, submerged artificial reefs and groin integrating artificial rock are proposed as secondary countermeasures for beach erosion. This resulted to be the optimal beach erosion countermeasure from DOPS, considering the economic and environmental conditions of the study area.
Coastal erosion is becoming a significant problem in Greece, Bangladesh, and globally. For the prevention and minimization of damage from coastal erosion, combinations of various structures have been used conventionally. However, most of these methods are expensive. Therefore, creating artificial beachrock using local ureolytic bacteria and the MICP (Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation) method can be an alternative for coastal erosion protection, as it is a sustainable and eco-friendly biological ground improvement technique. Most research on MICP has been confined to land ureolytic bacteria and limited attention has been paid to coastal ureolytic bacteria for the measurement of urease activity. Subsequently, their various environmental effects have not been investigated. Therefore, for the successful application of MICP to coastal erosion protection, the type of bacteria, bacterial cell concentration, reaction temperature, cell culture duration, carbonate precipitation trend, pH of the media that controls the activity of the urease enzyme, etc., are evaluated. In this study, the effects of temperature, pH, and culture duration, as well as the trend in carbonate precipitation of coastal ureolytic bacteria isolated from two coastal regions in Greece and Bangladesh, were evaluated. The results showed that urease activity of coastal ureolytic bacteria species relies on some environmental parameters that are very important for successful sand solidification. In future, we aim to apply these findings towards the creation of artificial beachrock in combination with a geotextile tube for coastal erosion protection in Mediterranean countries, Bangladesh, and globally, for bio-mediated soil improvement.

Two-dimensional hydraulic experiments were performed to assess the impact of artificial seaweed on wave energy attenuation, and coastal erosion prevention. In this experimental study, erosion geometry and wave reflection coefficients were determined for normal and stormy incident waves, with and without artificial seaweed. The coastline of beaches without artificial vegetation was observed to retreat, and the longshore bar height increased in normal and stormy conditions. Through the introduction of artificial seaweed (of widths 0.8 m, and 1.6 m), the coastline was found to advance in the offshore direction due to material deposition. From these results, it is shown that artificial seaweed alters the cross-section of beaches, such that it is possible to prevent coastline erosion.
In coastal morphological modelling, there are a number of input factors: wave height, water depth, sand particle size, bed friction coefficients, coastal structures and so forth. Measurements or estimates of these input data may include uncertainties due to errors by the measurement or hind-casting methods. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the uncertainty of each input data and the range of the uncertainty during the evaluation of numerical results. In this study, three uncertainty factors are considered with regard to the prediction of coastal erosion in Ilsan beach located in Ilsan-dong, Ulsan metropolitan city. Those are wave diffraction effect of XBeach model, wave input scenario and the specification of the coastal structure. For this purpose, the values of mean wave direction, significant wave height and the height of the submerged breakwater were adjusted respectively and the followed numerical results of morphological changes are analyzed. There were erosion dominant patterns as the wave direction is perpendicular to Ilsan beach, the higher significant wave height, and the lower height of the submerged breakwater. Furthermore, the rate of uncertainty impacts among mean wave direction, significant wave height and the height of the submerged breakwater are compared. In the study area, the uncertainty influence by the wave input scenario was the largest, followed by the height of the submerged breakwater and the mean wave direction.
This study was to investigate the establish situation of coastal disaster prevention forest for future-oriented management and establishment method of stands. As a result, the area of coastal disaster prevention forest was about 1,479ha in Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare the thining regime for area of coastal disaster prevention forest and make a management method for fallen poor disaster prevention function of coastal forests. In addition, more positive counterplan would be necessary to conclude the protection against this disasters because the damage from coastal erosion or pine wilt disease were increased partly in some area.
In recent years, coastal areas have been suffering from coastal erosion, such as destruction of coastal roads and military facilities. In this study, the Delft3D model was used to analyze the sediment transport pattern due to seasonal characteristics of summer and winter waves in Anmok beach of the East coast. Typhoon and high waves are mainly are coming from ENE direction in the summer season and the flows occur in the northward. In winter, high waves are incident from NE and the flows occur in the southward. These seasonal patterns were simulated by using Delft3D model. As for model input, reanalysis wave data of the past 38 years were used, and the seasonal patterns were analyzed by dividing the whole year into summer and winter season. The grid point of the 38 year reanalysis data is far from the Anmok beach, so the three model grid systems (wide grid -> intermediate grid -> detailed grid) are constructed. Most of the flows in the NW direction occurred in summer, but erosion and deposition was alternated along the coastline. In winter, sediment was deposited near Gangnung Port due to the southern flow and the southern port. Strong winter waves compared to summer tend to cause deposition around Gangnung Port throughout the year.
