A multi-nesting grid storm surge model, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute-Storm surge model, was calibrated to simulate storm surges. To check the performance of this storm surge model, a series of numerical experiments were explored including tidal calibration, the influence of the open boundary condition, the grid resolutions, and typhoon paths on the surge heights using the typhoon Maemi, which caused a severe coastal disasters in Sep. 2003. In this study the meteorological input data such as atmospheric pressure and wind fields were calculated using CE wind model. Total 11 tidal gauge station records with 1-minute interval data were compared with the model results and the storm surge heights were successfully simulated. The numerical experiments emphasized the importance of meteorological input and fine-mesh grid systems on the precise storm surge prediction. This storm surge model could be used as an operational storm surge prediction system after more intensive verification.

Coastal sand dunes have been regarded as natural defenses to protect hinterland from disasters such as storm surge and typhoons. However, many dunes are not well-deserved in South Korea because of imprudent land development or inappropriate measures after coastal erosion. Lately, beach nourishment and dune reinforcement are emphasized as the effective and environmentally sustainable solution for the coastal protection. They are regarded good strategies to keep landscapes for a time, with little side effects. However, there is little knowledge on the construction methods including proper design and time plans for the best results. In addition, the effects of dune reinforcement in the field should be tested. In thisstudy, we performed sand filling in an eroded dune scarp and surveyed topographic changes in the beach-dune system, which is located along Dasa-ri coast, Chungnam Province, South Korea. Using a network RTK-GPS and drone-based aerial photographs, we analyzed the temporal and spatial changes in the area, before and after the reinforcement. As a result, the dune reinforcement seems to be helpful to mitigates the coastal erosion and to prevent the coastline retreat at least for one year.

Various development projects occurring on the coast cause an imbalance of surface sediments, causing coastal disasters or irreversible coastal erosion. Coastal erosion caused by the influence of various port structures built through coastal development can be directly identified by evaluating changes in the sediment budget, longshore sediment, and cross-shore sediment. In other words, it will be possible to evaluate the causality between coastal development and coastal erosion by classifying regions due to single cause and regions due to multiple causes according to the changes in the sediment classified into the three types mentioned above. In this study, the cause of long-term and continuous erosion was analyzed based on the analysis results of the coastal development history and the Coastal Erosion Monitoring targeting the coast of Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do on the east coast. In addition, in order to evaluate the degree of erosion caused by the construction of artificial coastal structures, the concept of erosion impact assessment was established, three methods were proposed for the impact assessment. The erosion impact of Hajeo port was assessed using the results of satellite image analysis presented in the Coastal Erosion Monitoring Report, it was assessed that the development of Hajeo port had an impact of 93.4% on erosion, and that of the coastal road construction had an impact of 6.6%.
Recently, coastal structures have been built to protect coastal areas. However, if a tidal wave caused by an earthquake hits the coast, it would cause catastrophic damages. It is important to analyze the basics and the characteristics of a tsunami to reduce damages caused by natural disasters. In this study, a tsunami passing over different topographical changes is simulated with VOF method based on FVM(Finite Volume Method). The reduction of both scale and velocity is accomplished by similarity analysis, and an initial energy is generated by increasing the water level as needed to create a tsunami as if it is caused by a crustal movement. It is found that the present method is appropriate to simulate the tsunami with its mechanism.
This study was carried out to investigate and evaluate the vegetations in the coastal dunes in the vicinity of swimming beaches on the East Sea, South Korea, and the vegetations that were investigated are as follows: Carex pumila community, Cynodon dactylon community, Zoysia macrostachya community, Rosa rugosa community, Vitex rotundifolia community and Carex kobomugi typical community. Some of these vegetations, such as Carex kobomugi, Calystegia soldanella, Ixeris repens, Elymus mollis, Lathyrus japonica, and Glehnia littoralis were found to be differential species which belongs to Caricion kobomugi of Glehnietea littoralis. It was also discovered that Vitex rotundifolia community was the most heterogeneous among vegetation communities of the coastal dunes surrounding swimming beaches, and Zoysia macrostachya community was most closely linked to the typical coastal dune vegetation community. Finally, Rosa rugosa community and Vitex rotundifolia community seemed to have formed near the hinterland of coastal dunes and swimming beaches respectively because of certain unnatural disturbances such as construction of buildings and facilities or natural disasters.

Urban development and population increases are continuously progressed in the coastal areas in Korea, thus it is expected that vulnerability towards coastal disasters by sea level rise (SLR) would be accelerated. This study investigated trend of the sea level data using Mann-Kendall (MK) test, and the results showed that the increasing trends of annual average sea level at 17 locations were statistically significant. For annual maximum extremes, seven locations exhibited statistically significant trends. In this study, non-stationary frequency analysis for the annual extreme data together with average sea level data as a covariate was performed. Non-stationary frequency analysis results showed that sea level at the coastal areas of Korean Peninsula would be increased from a minimum of 60.33 mm to a maximum of 214.90 mm by 2100.

This study shows that coastal sand dunes are negatively affected by coastal forests. In South Korea, planting pine trees on the dunes has been carried out to stabilize the dune landscapes and protect residential areas from coastal disasters since the 20th century. However, this strategy could reduce the resilience of dunes. In this study, we selected three monitoring sites with automated weather stations to compare the geomorphological and environmental characteristics between tree-covered and grass-covered dunes at Sohwang-ri, Boryeong-si, Chungnam Province for three years. In addition, we monitored the rates of erosion and deposition using eight pins along the dune crests. We found that the forest affected both wind velocity and direction, resulting in decreased blown sand supply to the dunes in front of the forest. The velocity of the strong winds faster than 5 m/s diminished to 10%-30% of the control sites, and the direction of northwesterly wind were skewed to the north by about 6°. Sand deposition occurred at about 15-20 m away from the pine forest and the amount was only 1/10 of the deposition within the grass-covered dunes. This study suggests that planting trees in coastal dunes is an undesirable strategy with negative impacts on the landscape management.

Climate change is significantly affecting coastal areas, and its impacts are expected to intensify. Recent studies on climate change adaptation and risk assessment in coastal regions increasingly integrate the concepts of recovery resilience and vulnerability. The aim of this study is to develop a measurement model for coastal hazard recovery resilience in the context of climate change adaptation. Before constructing the measurement model, a comprehensive literature review was conducted on coastal hazard recovery resilience, establishing a conceptual framework that included operational definitions for vulnerability and recovery resilience, along with several feedback mechanisms. The measurement model for coastal hazard recovery resilience comprised four metrics (MRV, LRV, RTSPV, and ND) and a Coastal Resilience Index (CRI). The developed indices were applied to domestic coastal erosion cases, and regional analyses were performed based on the index grades. The results revealed that the four recovery resilience metrics provided insights into the diverse characteristics of coastal erosion recovery resilience at each location. Mapping the composite indices of coastal resilience indicated that the areas along the East Sea exhibited relatively lower coastal erosion recovery resilience than the West and South Sea regions. The developed recovery resilience measurement model can serve as a tool for discussions on post-adaptation strategies and is applicable for determining policy priorities among different vulnerable regional groups.
This study provided a new research perspective for processing and analyzing AE data to evaluate rock failure. Cluster method and information entropy theory were introduced to investigate temporal and spatial correlation of acoustic emission (AE) events during the rock failure process. Laboratory experiments of granite subjected to compression were carried out, accompanied by real-time acoustic emission monitoring. The cumulative length and dip angle curves of single links were fitted by different distribution models and distribution functions of link length and directionality were determined. Spatial scale and directionality of AE event distribution, which are characterized by two parameters, i.e., spatial correlation length and spatial correlation directionality, were studied with the normalized applied stress. The entropies of link length and link directionality were also discussed. The results show that the distribution of accumulative link length and directionality obeys Weibull distribution. Spatial correlation length shows an upward trend preceding rock failure, while there are no remarkable upward or downward trends in spatial correlation directionality. There are obvious downward trends in entropies of link length and directionality. This research could enrich mathematical methods for processing AE data and facilitate the early-warning of rock failure-related geological disasters.
Understanding the severity of the typhoon-induced storm-surge helps in planning reaction and in preventing further disaster. Natural disasters due to the storm-surge are predictable from accurate observations and forecasts from numerical simulations. What we can do is to make intelligent effort to minimize the loss due to the disaster to the most extent with the technology of early warning, forecast and prevention activity. In this paper, we propose the design of GIS-based Web Service System to visualize the time-varying storm-surge's height and wind field data effectively with 3 different kinds of resolution for predict and prevent storm-surge disasters. This system is one of the efforts to provide the storm-surge forecast service to general public and share two-way more helpful information to coastal resident through the Internet.
