To evaluate the organic matter and trace metal pollution in intertidal sediment of the coastal zone, various geochemical parameters (grain size, ignition loss [IL], chemical oxygen demand [COD], acid volatile sulfide [AVS], and metals [Al, Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Mn, Hg, and As]) were measured for the intertidal surface sediment of the mainland and islands between Mokpo and Haenam in the southwestern coast of Korea. The surface sediments consist mainly of finer sediments, such as mud and silt. The concentrations of IL, COD, and trace metals in intertidal sediment were relatively high in the shoreline of the mainland than in that of islands and those in some stations exceeded the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs). Moreover, the concentrations of IL, COD, and trace metals (except As) in sediment showed relatively good positive correlations with mean grain size, indicating that the concentrations of organic matter and trace metals in intertidal sediment of the study region are dependent on grain size of sediment. Pollution evaluation for trace metals using geochemical assessment techniques, such as enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, and SQGs, suggested that the intertidal sediments in the study region show light pollution with Cr and moderate pollution with As. More extensive interdisciplinary studies are required to determine the potential causes of As pollution in intertidal sediment.

In order to understand hydrodynamic and water quality changes on the Saemangeum reservoir in accordance to inner development plan, intensive numerical simulations using EFDC have been done. Due to inner dike construction and proposed dredging plans, stratification might occur and yield flow field change. It should be noticed that very conditional gate operation schedule adjusting target water elevation of -1.5 meter causes severe stratification and hence plays an important role in poor water qualities. By using random walk particle tracking residence simulations, it is found that hydrodynamic characteristics depends greatly on riverine inflow conditions. It is also inferred that the northern part of the Mangyeong reservoir behaves as a dead zone and acts as major reasoning of water quality deterioration owing to benthic flux from long-term residing settled sediment.
The tsunami that resulted from the Central East sea Earthquake, which registered 7.7 on the Richter scale, that occurred over the entire water region in Akita on May. 26, 1983 and the tsunami that was triggered by the Southwest off Hokkaido Earthquake (7.8 on the Richter scale) that occurred in Southwest off Hokkaido on July 12, 1993 are representative cases that led to considerable damage in life and property, not only in Japan but also in Korea. In this study, multi-grid method was used in order to reproduce sufficiently the shoaling effect that occurs as water depth becomes shallow in the shallow water region and moving boundary condition was introduced to consider the runup in the coastal region. For the tsunamis that exerted considerable effect on the East Sea coast of Korea that were caused by the Central East Sea Earthquake in 1983 and the Southwest off Hokkaido Earthquake in 1993, characteristics like water level rise and propagation in the East Sea coast will be examined using numerical simulations. At the same time, these values will be compared with observed values. In addition, maximum water level rise and change in the water level with respect to time that were caused by the tsunamis were examined at each location along the East sea coast. Usefulness of numerical analysis was verified by comparing with observed values.

Blooms of macroalgae have grown over the planet in recent decades as a possible result of eutrophication of coastal waters. Visually, a bloom forming can be identified by dominant presence of an organism at the expense of others. In mid-January 2014, a forming bloom of red algae was detected on the beach of Garopaba, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. This aroused the interest of tourists and locals as well as the scientific community. Thus, the objective of this study was to characterize and quantify the photosynthetic floating organisms contributing to this phenomenon. In addition, we qualitatively compared algal composition of the bloom to those deposited in the post-beach area and the adjacent rocky shore community. Five sampling points in random patches of floating material were defined. At each point, five replicates were taken with a cube of 32,768 cm3, resulting in a total of 25 samples. Samples were collected in the inner area enclosed by a PVC quadrate of about 900 cm² from the shore and the specimens found in post-beach zone (wrack). Twenty-four taxa of macroalgae were found in the bloom, with Aglaothamnion uruguayense as the dominance one. Ten taxa were found on shore. Only four taxa were found in the post-beach area. The biomass estimated for A. uruguayense in the floating material was 8.35 tons with an estimated area of 52,770 m2 . It is possible that this huge biomass value of the bloom is related to the local nutrient intake, and our results reinforce the necessity of coastal integrative management initiatives.

Ecological stability of the Lake Shihwa, artificially made by the construction of the Shihwa Dike, was evaluated by the species composition and variation in biomass of zooplankton. Species composition and seasonal variation in biomass in the seaside stations were similar to those observed in nearby bays and coastal zone. However, those in the lake sites showed very different patterns. The brackish water copepod, Sinocaianus tenellus, held the first rank in every season (with more than 66% in spring, 98% in summer and fall, and 80% in winter). The species composition was very simple and the biomass (in terms of total individuals $m^{-3}$) varied markedly with season up to the order of $10^4$ magnitude. These results imply that the lake ecosystem made by the construction of Sihwa dike is in very unstable stage probably due to the input of industrial wastes as well as unpredictable variation in salt content caused by irregular control of the watergate of the dike and resultant irregular flow direction of the water through the gate.
Coral reefs are among the most dynamic and various ecosystems on tropical ecosystem. They provide a large number of important ecosystem services. Despite their importance, they appear to be one of the most susceptible marine ecosystems. Dramatic decreasing of coral reefs has been reported from every part of the world. Indonesia contains 18% of coral reefs of world's total. Unfortunately the status of coral reefs in Indonesia is already in critical and poor condition. Coral reefs communities in Indonesia are subjected to a variety of environmental disturbance. Threats to Indonesia's coral reefs resources can be divided into two main types: anthropogenic and natural disturbances. The major anthropogenic disturbances on coral reefs in Indonesia are destructive fishing, pollution, coastal development, mining and harvesting live fish and coral, tourism. The natural disturbances such as cyclones, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami and predator also contribute to coral reefs destruction in Indonesia. In my paper I tried to compare between natural and anthropogenic disturbances on coral reefs in Indonesia and raised these questions: (i) how the natural disturbances differ from anthropogenic area (ii) which type of disturbances has caused the greatest impact on coral reef ecosystem. My finding is that both of anthropogenic and natural disturbances give major impact on coral reefs in Indonesia. The important issue here is coral reef resilience could be disturbed by synergistic effects between various anthropogenic and natural disturbances. This phenomenon has significant conservation and management implication. The appropriate management should be conducted to protect coral reefs ecosystem in Indonesia. Mangrove management will succeed only when local people are involved and get sustainable benefits from mangrove ecosystem. Community based management and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) are type of management that can be applied on coral reef ecosystems in Indonesia.

The Yellow Sea and the East China Sea are the most important fishing grounds for the fishing industry of Korea, China and Japan which are major coastal states of these Seas. But the fishery resources in these fishing grounds are almost exhausted and also the sea region is seriously polluted. Accordingly an international joint countermeasure is necessary to recover the fishery resources and to keep the fishery a continuous industry. The authors inspected the existing fishery policies and international fishery relationship of the three coastal states, and suggested rational conservation and management regime of the fishery resources in these sea regions. 1. At present the legal status of the sea region beyond territorial sea is the high sea, for that reason the international cooperation is urgently needed to establish common regime for conservation and management of the fishery resources. 2. A series of scientific research on ecological system of fishery resources must be carried out in the sea region first of all for that purpose. 3. The existing Korea-Japanese Fishery Agreement and Sino-Japanese Fishery Agreement should be reformed to coincide with the new legal order of the UNLOS Convention, and the Sino-Korean Fishery Agreement should be concluded newly on the identical line. 4. As a conclusion, a joint conservation and management regime through a regional fishery organization or a individual conservation and management regime through the promulgation of exclusive economic zone by each state can be suggested to resolve the fishery resources conservation problem in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea.
This study has been undertaken to research the characteristics of growth of Pinus thunbergii Parl., which were planted in Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk, Coast Disaster Prevention Forest. The total amount of 3600 trees of 9 sand dune stabilizing hedges were monitored in the past 4 years. The relationship between tree growth with environmental factors such as wind speed, soil conditions and sand-accumulation fences has been compared and investigated. To increase the growth increment of coastal disaster prevention forests, the development of sand-accumulating fences is the most important factor in controlling wind speed effectively. The monitoring for the maximizing wind-break effect of the sand-accumulating fences should be investigated when building coastal disaster prevention forests.

A water pipeline buried under the riverbed could be exposed by bed erosion, therefore safe crossing sections should be analyzed for preventing damages due to the exposure of pipelines. In this study, flow and bed changes have been simulated using a two-dimensional numerical model for selecting the optimized section of pipeline crossing in the Geum River. As a result of simulation with the 20-year recurrence flood, sediment deposition has been distributed overall in the channel and bed erosion over 2 m has occurred near bridge piers. For the extreme flood simulation, the channel bed near the bridge piers has been eroded down to the buried depth. Therefore, within 140 m upstream of the bridge piers, bed erosion affects a buried pipeline in safety due to bridge pier effects and the crossing section over 150 m upstream of bridge piers is selected as a safe zone of a water pipeline.

To evaluate the relative ecological quality of Taean coastal areas in terms of various seaweed community indices, seasonal samplings were taken at the Hakampo, Padori, Chaeseokpo, Mongsanpo and Bangpo shores from March 2006 to January 2007. A total of 105 species were identified; species richness ranged from 37~72 species spatially and from 65~75 species seasonally over the study period. Coarsely-branched seaweeds were dominant in functional group and ESG I (ecological state group I) made up 61 species (58.10%) of the identified macroalgae. The average seaweed biomass at the five study sites was $56.63g\;dry\;wt./m^2$ (range, 36.66 at Hakampo $-73.89g/m^2$ at Mongsanpo). Seaweeds were generally abundant in mid and low intertidal zone. Corallina pilulifera, Ulva australis, Sargassum thunbergii, Neorhodomela aculeata, and Symphyocladia latiuscula were the dominant species across all five study sites. Species diversity was between 1.24~2.30, while species evenness was between 0.40 and 0.61. The dominance index ranged from 0.43 at Padori to 0.64 at Mongsanpo. Given the community indices and shore descriptions, the five study sites were divided into two groups based on ecological quality: moderate (Chaeseokpo and Mongsanpo) and good (Hakampo, Padori and Bangpo).
