This study reports, for the first time, the ivestigation of the distribution of Korean saxicolous lichens in the coastal rocks of U-do islet, which is known as an unpolluted zone in Jeju. More than thirty lichens were obtained and investigated from the coastal rocks frequently contacted by seawater. A molecular analysis using PCR amplification of the rRNA ITS regions revealed the coastal rock lichens could be placed into 8 families and 14 genera, Ramalinaceae (Bacidia, Ramalina), Physciaceae (Buellia, Dirinaria, Phaeophyscia, Physcia, Pyxine), Lecanoraceae (Candelaria, Lecanora), Parmeliaceae (Xanthopannelia), Graphidaceae (Graphis), Pertusariaceae (Pertusaria), Rhizocarpaceae (Rhizocarpon), and Teloschistaceae (Caloplaca), showing a diversity of lichens, with foliose (flat leaf-like), crustose (crustlike), and fruticose (miniature shrub-like) life forms might be distributed in the coastal rocks. These findings suggested the possibility that the lichens identified in the present work might be resistant to a salty environment.
Coastal aquifers may serve as major sources fur freshwater. In many coastal aquifers, intrusion of seawater has become one of the major constraints imposed on groundwater utilization. The management of groundwater in coastal acquifers means making decision as to the pumping rate and the spatial distribution of wells. Several numerical techniques for flow and solute transport simulation can provide the means to achieve this goal. As a basic study to predict the intrusion of seawater in coastal phreatic aquifers, the coupled flow and solute transport analysis was conducted by use of the 3-D finite element code, SWICHA. In order to understand how the location and the shape of freshwater-seawater transition zone were affected by the boundary conditions and hydrogeologic variables, parametric study was carried out.
Numerical simulations on the suspended load in the Do jang fish port are carried out. Suspended load is analysed by using the two-dimensional advection-diffusion equation. To describe behaviors of a pollutant in costal zone, a split-operator method is applied to the numerical model. The advection part is first solved by SOWMAC and then the diffusion part is solved by a three-level locally implicit scheme.

Petrochemical, K-Ar dating, Sand Rb/Sr isotopes, metallogenic zoning, paleomagnetic and geotectonic studies of the Gyongsang basin were carried out to examine applicability of plate tectonics to the post-late Cretaceous igneous activity and metallogeny in the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Bulgugsa granitic rocks range from granite to adamellite, whose Q-Ab-Or triangular diagram indicates that the depth and pressure at which the magma consolidated increase from coast to inland varying from 6 km, 0.5-3.3 kb in the coastal area to 17 km, 0.5-10 kb in the inland area. 2. The volcanic rocks in Gyongsang basin range from andesitic to basaltic rocks, and the basaltic rocks are generally tholeiitic in the coastal area and alkali basalt in the inland area. 3. The volcanic rocks of the area have the initial ratio of Sr^{87}/Sr^{86} varying from 0.706 to 0.707 which suggests a continental origin; the ratio of Rb/Sr changing from 0.079-0.157 in the coastal area to 0.021-0.034 in the inland area suggests that the volcanism is getting younger toward coastal side, which may indicate a retreat in stage of differentiation if they were derived from a same magma. The K_2O/SiO_2 (60%) increases from about 1.0 in the coastal area to about 3.0 in the inland area, which may suggest an increase indepth of the Benioff zone, if existed, toward inland side. 4. The K-Ar ages of volcanic rocks were measured to be 79.4 m.y. near Daegu, and 61.7 m.y. near Busan indicating a southeastward decrease in age. The ages of plutonic rocks also decrease toward the same direction with 73 m.y. near Daegu, and 58 m.y. near Busan, so that the volcanism predated the plutonism by 6 m.y. in the continental interior and 4 m.y. along the coast. Such igneous activities provide a positive evidence for an applicability of plate tectonics to this area. 5. Sulfur isotope analyses of sulfide minerals from 8 mines revealed that these deposits were genetically connected with the spacially associated ingeous rocks showing relatively narrow range of ${\delta}^{34}S$ values (-0.9‰ to +7.5‰ except for +13.3 from Mulgum Mine). A sequence of metallogenic zones from the coast to the inland is delineated to be in the order of Fe-Cu zone, Cu-Pb-Zn zone, and W-Mo zone. A few porphyry type copper deposits are found in the Fe-Cu zone. These two facts enable the sequence to be comparable with that of Andean type in South America. 6. The VGP's of Cretaceous and post Cretaceous rocks from Korea are located near the ones($71^{\circ}N$, $180^{\circ}E$ and $90^{\circ}N$, $110^{\circ}E$) obtained from continents of northern hemisphere. This suggests that the Korean peninsula has been stable tectonically since Cretaceous, belonging to the Eurasian continent. 7. Different polar wandering path between Korean peninsula and Japanese islands delineates that there has been some relative movement between them. 8. The variational feature of declination of NRM toward northwestern inland side from southeastern extremity of Korean peninsula suggests that the age of rocks becomes older toward inland side. 9. The geological structure(mainly faults) and trends of lineaments interpreted from the Landsat imagery reveal that NNE-, NWW- and NEE-trends are predominant in the decreasing order of intensity. 10. The NNE-trending structures were originated by tensional and/or compressional forces, the directions of which were parallel and perpendicular respectively to the subduction boundary of the Kula plate during about 90 m.y. B.P. The NWW-trending structures were originated as shear fractures by the same compressional forces. The NEE-trending structures are considered to be priginated as tension fractures parallel to the subduction boundary of the Kula plate during about 70 m.y. B.P. when Japanese islands had drifted toward southeast leaving the Sea of Japan behind. It was clearly demonstrated by many authors that the drifting of Japanese islands was accompanied with a rotational movement of a clock-wise direction, so that it is inferred that subduction boundary had changed from NNE- to NEE-direction. A number of facts and features mentioned above provide a suite of positive evidences enabling application of plate tectonics to the late Cretaceous-early Tertiary igneous activity and metallogeny in the area. Synthesizing these facts, an arc-trench system of continental margin-type is adopted by reconstructing paleogeographic models for the evolution of Korean peninsula and Japan islands. The models involve an extention mechanism behind the are(proto-Japan), by which proto-Japan as of northeastern continuation of Gyongsang zone has been drifted rotationally toward southeast. The zone of igneous activity has also been migrated from the inland in late-Cretaceous to the peninsula margin and southwestern Japan in Tertiary.

There are insufficient data to consider the effect zone for the marine life of coastal fisheries, because no standard has been defined for the sound level of marine life. In this study, equations for distance attenuation were used to determine the effect zone for oceanic noises. A reference noise level was divided into 4 parts to consider the characteristics of the fishes, and the effect zone of each reference noise level was determined. To increase the reliability of the effect scope, approximately 100 repetitions of blasting work split into several parts by the boring depth, the sound level of the source caused by an increase in weight, and the effect zone were calculated using the prediction equation. According to the prediction, the maximum distance of the effect zone was 4.92 km.
The intertidal zone has both land and marine characteristics and shows complex weather environments. These characteristics are suited for studying climate change, energy balance and ecosystems, and may play an important role in coastal and marine weather prediction and analysis. This study was conducted at Odo Island, approximately 300m from the mainland in Yeosu. We built a weather observation system capable of real-time monitoring on the mud flat in the intertidal zone and measured actual weather and marine data. Weather observation was conducted from April to June 2022. The results showed changes in air temperature and water temperature with changes in the tide level during spring. Correlation analysis revealed characteristic changes in air temperature and water temperature during the day and night, and with inundation and exposure.

A small hydro-power plant operated by cooling water discharged from the power plant is under construction. In this study, the flow characteristics of the effluent channel and the outfall coastal zone in which the facilities are constructed have been measured and analysed. The flow pattern is highly dependent on the effluent discharge and clearly classified as these typical areas; the upstream and downstream areas of the weir, and the outfall coastal zone. The discharge and the width of the channel in the upstream area of the weir are increased step by step, so the water level fluctuation is small. The flow overtopping the weir is rapidly changing and has highly vertical fluctuation patterns after hydraulic jump just below the weir. The flow pattern in the outfall zone is directed toward the seaward direction and the velocity is dominated by the tidal level fluctuation. The mean tidal range in this area is about 10% greater than that of the Tongyeong tidal gauging station and the wave effects are negligible because of the sheltering effects of this area.

It was analysed that spatial and temporal change patterns of COD, TN and TP were measured monthly from 2002 to 2005 in Jumunjin Harbour. Cenerally, concentration of upper layer higher than lower layer, concentration difference of COD, TN and TP on upper lower layer at inner zone in Jumunjin Harbour higher than sea area front of breakwater. Seasonal change width of COD concentration different, but seasonal change pattern of COD, $NH_{4}-N$ and TN clearly showed. Water quality improvement effect of seawater exchange facilities and sewage treatment plants is analysed quantitatively using averaged spatial and temporal data set. Change of COD small at 2003, concentration reduced about $34{\sim}47%$ at all zones on 2004 and 2005. TN was influenced largely effect of seawater exchange facilities. Concentration reduction at zone 1, 2, 3 estimated about $60{\sim}70%,\;40{\sim}60%,\;40%$, respectively. As a consequence, concentration reduction of COD and TN that is, effect of water quality improvement influenced seawater exchange facilities appeared not only at inner zone, also sea area front of breakwater and entrance of Jumunjin Harbour.

In the southeast coastal zone of Yellow Sea, the tide characteristics showing ebb-dominant tide and tidal flow were confirmed by analysis of observed tide and tidal currents. Physical factors generating asymmetric tide were reviewed. Influence of bottom shear stress, tidal flat, and nonlinear terms in shallow water equations was investigated by two-dimensional tide modeling. The model results gave good agreements with observed tides, but the amplitude of simulated $M_4$ tide was less than that of observed tide. The tidal flats existing in the study area widely have great effect on the generation of nonlinear tide. The M4 tide is mainly generated near the tidal flats. The deletion of tidal flats prevents the production of the M4 tide. We can conclude that the wide tidal flats is a primary cause of tide asymmetry in the study area.

The change pattern of the sediment grain size distribution information (median grain size(D50)) due to some gridding method and sampling density is analyzed with reference to the grid information estimated by the 90 sediment samples which was collected in the coastal water off the Baengnyeongdo Island, in June 2004. The standard deviation of absolute deviation (AD) estimated the selected gridding method shows 8.0 ${\mu}m$ at June, 2004 and 10 ${\mu}m$ November, 2004. The estimated statistical information of absolute deviation in comparison with the grid information of reference and changed sampling density shows that the AD mean error trends increase as the number of samples decrease. The AD mean error is below 10% in the case of the information estimation using 50-sample with reference to the 90-sample information. In this case, the sampling density is suggested as about 9 sediment samples per $km^2$, at coastal zone in Yoggipo port in the condition of the study area is 5.9 $km^2$.
